INSPIRING: How Christina Mallon Makes the Fashion Industry Work for Her

Christina Mallon is a digital marketing manager in her late 20s living in NYC. 10 years ago, she was diagnosed with a type of ALS called flail arm syndrome. She started to feel weakness in both of her arms and eventually became completely paralyzed. It is a challenge for Christina to put on and take off her clothes. Over the 10 years since she has been diagnosed, Christina has learned to depend on her mouth, legs and feet to do daily tasks. She also lives alone, and has a caretaker who comes to her home to assist her every morning.

Christina Mallon has seen over 400 doctors around the world, but no one can quite figure out what caused her to lose complete feeling in her hands and arms. But that has not stopped her from living her best life in NYC—she works full time, has become a spokesperson for people with disabilities, has an awesome partner, and is super involved with Cair Collective, a non-profit that designs clothing for people with disabilities. Cair Collective has gained national recognition and has been featured in many news outlets including Vogue, CNBC, TeenVogue, PBS.

Cair Collective is a design firm that looks to re-imagine dressing experiences with inclusive design principles. Together they designed an innovative, independent, adaptive dressing with and for Christina Mallon. Cair Collective considers a paradigm where air is used as a means of getting dressed. In fashion this might seem bizarre, but in other fields we are looking at self driving cars and AI. So, what if clothes can do more for us and our bodies as well? Designing accessible fashion for people with disabilities like Christina Mallon is very important! See how this brilliant woman makes the fashion industry work for her. Share, like and comment!
