Cackle Lantern
Greetings adventurers!
I’ve always marveled at the craftsmanship of carving gourds in order to resemble faces. Illuminating them with little dancing flames to show the world something joyous and celebrate the time of year I find most hospitable to my climate preferences. I thought we should share that laughter and joy with others, so I grabbed a spare lantern I had sitting around, banged out a few of the dents and set to putting a new lens in it. I have to say it brings me joy just to look at it. Maybe it will trigger a laugh or two for you as well.

Any time I manage to come up with what I consider to be a dad joke worthy pun, it’s safe to say it will probably end up as an item that we put out at some point. Spooky season is the perfect time of year to really lean into that as we can get a little cheesy without feeling too bad about it. We always love creating something serious as well, but there’s a special joy to be found in putting together something that is so outlandish, yet so lovely at the same time.
The concept of this one was simple, it’s a lantern that makes you laugh. I had thought about writing this via my own mechanics, but nicely enough each of the systems that we make things for having a specific laughter focused spell that fit extremely well thematically. I just had to take my time balancing frequency as well as giving it one downside of using the rest of the fuel available.
In the end, it’s a useful adventuring item that can also have a bit of use in combat when you need it in a pinch. I think that’s one of the best ways to put something into game as you get the constant use, but then when the moment is right, you get something more.
