Five Fingers
Greetings adventurers!
There are twisted magics that creep into the edges of our reality and seek to corrupt the living with offers of power and temptations of greatness. While many are strong enough to resist the siren call of these voices, some give in to the relentless draw of life eternal or unlimited power. It is those that we most have to watch out for as the most unassuming form can be tempted by things they may not understand. When someone came into my shop and asked if they could give me a hand, I thought they were looking for work, but it turns out it was this. I haven’t had the mettle to touch it yet but give it a poke if you want. I’ll just be behind this stone wall.

Ah cursed items. I’ll be real, I don’t write a lot of these because I usually don’t find them very fun. They often are written as a bait and switch where instead of the exciting fun thing, you now have a bad thing and that always just feels a little mean-spirited to me. That said, I also understand the place they serve in the world as they are sometimes meant to give adventurers some caution in trusting everything they pick up in the dungeon. For me to consider a cursed item, I have to find a good theme and this felt like one to me.
I had originally written this item to be an uncursed item actually, but when I looked at what it was and how it functioned, I knew I needed to give it a little extra spice, but I still wanted it to be useful. The inability to remove it from your possession, then using some of its charges when you didn’t ask it to, those all felt like an interesting way of showing a powerful item that is actually out of your control and providing some dread to what happens when the final finger falls.
What to actually do when the last finger falls was a bit of a debate with myself. I thought originally of it just killing the person outright, but as I thought more, the idea of a sudden and unprepared fight with a massive foe could be an interesting opportunity. Something that people would suddenly need to adapt to and for me, that sounded really interesting. Finding the right creature for 5E and PF2E wasn’t difficult but they did need different flavors.
Since this is a cursed item, you're going to see more versions than usual in the folders. This is because we provide a cursed and non-cursed variant on all of our cursed items.
It’s spooky month and that means all month we’re going to be bringing you spooky magic items that will terrify and inspire your players at the same time.
