I’ve always been fascinated by those who love art so much as to have it embedded on their own skin. I don’t know that I would be brave enough to attempt it myself, but the passion and the stories they can tell are something that truly speaks to me in a way that brings me great curiosity when I see something with a tattoo. I always want to spend time hearing the story behind it and learning what might have brought them to decide to take such an extreme step of embedding a design into their body for life. One of the most powerful things to me is the memories it can seem to bring, but there are those who do it for another reason. This pen might just be the secret to beauty and power in one.

Design notes from Matthew:
It’s totally a personal thing, but late last year I actually got my first tattoo ever, which was a way more fun experience than I expected it to be. I wanted to get something to commemorate a few things in my life and afterwards, I was so happy with it that I knew I wanted to create something for AB that could bring some of that fun into TTRPGs as well. Pathfinder already has a tattoo system and 5E has some things that could be inspiration in that way, but I didn’t want to limit myself to their systems and instead sought to make something of my own.
The idea of etching spell scrolls onto the body for later, easier use just seemed like such a cool character idea for me that I knew that would be a good starting space. It also is somewhat of a tattoo enjoyers dream in that they can clear their fleshy canvas at any time and make room for new designs. I knew from the start that I didn’t want to limit what the designs could look like so people could get creative with what is currently on their character’s body.
Most of the balance points around this one were making sure that you can’t just store an infinite amount of spells on your body and that it takes some time to add multiple ones to yourself. This presents a downtime opportunity for casters, but it has an upper limit on how many can be stored along with the necessity to obtain the scrolls for it. Overall it’s a powerful option to be able to store and cast from the flesh, so it had to have some limits to keep it in check.
I’m in the process already of writing our next creature and item pairing that will be releasing next week and I can’t wait to share it with you all to see what you think. It’s going to be a pretty powerful one this time around so prep those high level characters.
