Greetings adventurers!
The power of words cannot be overstated. It’s truly amazing how some think that there cannot be the same power behind words as there can be with actions. Certainly one is more actionable (of course) than the other, but it’s true nonetheless that writing can carry a lot of sway with it as well. The idea that the pen can be mightier than the sword certainly has weight, but that did lead me to ask the question, what if the sword were sort of a pen as well. Cutting and weaving through your enemies is one thing, but can you cut through their psyche? Well this blade may just serve that purpose.

Design notes from Matthew:
This was actually a bit of a reverse design from some of our normal processes. Typically I will lay out some ideas and then Fernando and I will go back and forth on the design of it bouncing ideas off of one another until we land on something that feels solid enough to continue. This time though, Fernando had a visual in his head and came to me to pitch the idea, which is actually a lot of fun for me because then I just get to react based on what he builds out. He sent me the art before a single letter of the mechanics was typed and I built it out completely based on what I saw in his art.
I had been wanting to do something that was related to vicious mockery for some time now, but never felt like I had the right place to weave it into. This item became the perfect place that let me add an alternate way to cast it and also weave in a bit more flavor to the item. The second ability though is actually a port of the seal fate spell from PF2E. These days I tend to go back and forth on which mechanics I write first. This was one of those times where PF2E had the exact spell I wanted, so I needed to translate it back into 5E in a way that worked for the setting.
For the PF2E version, I had to do some modification on how the seal fate spell cast as I wanted this to be a little more wild and misunderstood than the standard method of casting the spell. This allows for a little less control than someone that can cast the spell natively, and that’s a really good way to dodge giving too much power to someone who doesn’t cast the spell normally. I think adding interesting changes and restrictions to spells cast from items can add a lot of flavor to them.
We’re well into this month’s content cycle and after seeing some of the sketches for the upcoming creature this month, I think we’re truly bringing you something amazing for this early spring. I’m so excited for things to get a little warmer in my part of the world and get back to existing outside from time to time!
We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
