Penumbra
Greetings adventurers!
There are several things that are beyond my understanding in the world, but I still enjoy the results of them. Certainly distilling is one of them, but also those that study combat and truly understand what may come next from their opponent. It’s something I’ve often found fascinating being able to run those predictions in your head and potentially know what is just around the corner in combat. I thought long and hard about that, before considering that maybe what I could do is mimic the process with an extensive process calculating mathematical outcomes. Then I threw all that work out and magically imbued some still living brain tissue I had in a weird jar!
Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, Foundry VTT modules, a filterable catalogue of all of our items, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.
If that strikes your fancy, consider becoming a Patron
Design notes from Matthew:
We are often influenced by the media around us and I don’t think that’s a bad thing whatsoever. A few months back, I played Dispatch and absolutely loved the world and story it created within its fiction. There was something truly exciting and interesting to me about not only the heroes, but the villains and those in between. I was particularly taken by Shroud and the idea of mathematically processing the outcomes of combat to know what could come next. I wanted to make something that had that feel for my preferred medium of tabletops.
On the 5E side, there was a challenge I faced with the fact that there’s not a lot of greatly defined rules around recalling weaknesses or things like that. I could have written a lot of text to describe that exact thing, but in the end it would have bloated the item and taken it away from its true intended purpose of battlefield buffs from seeing potential outcomes. I instead decided to give it an initiative bonus as I figured that conveyed some of the same forethought as recalling knowledge would in PF2E.
I often write our PF2E versions first these days. The reason for that is two-fold. First of all, PF2E is a more mathematically intensive system and requires more fine tuning to get something balanced. This means that if I can balance it in PF2E, I’ll often have an easier time doing so in 5E when I get there. The other reason is that I find I’m getting faster at translating from PF2E to 5E than vice versa. That’s a big change for my brain, but it’s something I’m glad I’ve decided to try for a bit.
We’re into April and you’ll notice we decided to skip the jokes for this year. First of all, Fernando and I were a bit busy with life this year to make something happen. Secondly, we like to think that even our silly items can be absolutely awesome and sensible within the right campaign. We’ve got another great month ahead and we can’t wait to bring it to you.
We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
