Hypnoyo

Greetings adventurers!

I’ve always been fascinated with children’s toys for many a reason, but chief among them is what they can teach us even as adults. The humble yo-yo is a great example of this as I realized this toy is amazing for improving hand-eye coordination even in adults. Seeing the hypnotic motions of someone who had truly mastered this toy opened my mind to something new. Why did we have to stop playing just because we grew up and furthermore, why was I so entranced by watching this man’s performance on a street corner. I knew what I had to do, so I set to work. A few magical enchantments, and well… This is a whole new tool to astound and charm.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

I’m a sucker for taking an everyday item and making it into something special in a TTRPG world. There’s just something innately entertaining in making the mundane magical. I was one of those kids that was always picking up new hobbies which now means I’m kind of okay at juggling, yo-yo, card throwing, and a number of other offbeat things. I always thought it would be cool if I could make those into something actually meaningful in a TTRPG and this is me kind of taking a hit at that. It probably won’t be our last foray into this type of thing.

This was one of those times where the design of the two systems diverged quite a bit. Something that 5E does a lot more of is saving throws which assumes the proficiency of the person triggering the skill and assumes the other has to resist it. That’s great for some reasons as it gets around the issues of bounded modifiers in 5E. It also means you can just say “I do the thing” and it happens. It’s up to the monster to see if they can get past it. I think for this kind of item, assuming proficiency made for a more fun piece in 5E.

In PF2E there is a lot more emphasis on you performing the thing. Certainly saving throws are present and frequent, but there are more opportunities in general to allow your specialization to show. I wanted this item to let those performers really shine through and give them something unique in this item. It’s reasonably weak in the wrong hands, but in the right one it could be deadly. For the way PF2E builds characters, letting specialized characters shine just feels like the right way to go.

As I said, this is something that I’ve been thinking about over time and I’d really love to turn some more common and mundane items into something cool in the TTRPGs we inhabit. Sure it’s fun making an awesome sword, but could I find a way to make a kazoo into something badass? Well that’s what I want to find out sometimes!
