Smokestack
Greetings adventurers!
I’ve heard of living houses before, but quickly dismissed them as some misunderstood magical phenomena, a curse or something of that type. Surely there wouldn’t actually be living, breathing, houses that get up and move around. That would just be absurdly silly right? Well turns out I was wrong and the things do exist. Not only do they exist but they’re also apparently hungry, as if things weren’t bad enough otherwise. Anyways, I would just be careful if you come across a building sitting in the middle of nowhere. It’s not what you think it is. Regardless of my own mishaps, I got this cool mace out of it!

Design notes from Matthew:
With our last item of the month we’re learning into the theming of a living breathing house that wants nothing more than to eat your party. We had gone through a number of ideas for the item before landing on this one. It’s one of the more unique items we’ve made in that it serves combat, utility, and exploration purposes. That’s not something that most items can do, but this one hit just the right juncture to be able to offer a lot in a small package.
On the 5E side, the closest thing I could get to the type of mechanic I wanted was fog cloud. It felt a little weak just being a fog cloud generator, so I decided to up the radius of it and additionally give it something special with being able to see through it for you and allies. I like taking spells that already exist and just tweaking them in simple ways to make them more powerful. Now the clouds can be a hideout to shoot from or confuse the battlefield easily.
On the PF2E version, I’ve found that if there’s a spell that gets the job done, it’s less forgiving to modify. You want to stick with the level of power the spell offers as best you can and that’s what I’ve done with a number of our items. The PF2E version differs with the smoke being incendiary, but I think that offers a cool opportunity for team play from it. The last addition on both of these was the torch language. I just thought it would be a nice way to free up a hand.
We’re going to be releasing the Deadwithe Inn later on today and I can’t wait to get that in your hands. It’s a really special one and I put in a good amount of effort to make it a monster to fight against. I hope you all do something amazing with it in your campaigns.
We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
