"EP Weekend"

I'm gonna focus on short projects this weekend (runtimes around 25 min or so). Lots of those have been piling up on my list, and this weekend works out well for me to do quick recording sessions. I'm gonna start with the new Lil Uzi Vert EP that released last weekend, continue with "Detour" by Samara Cyn (an artist I've been meaning to listen to forever now), and I'll probably get to 'Bloodluxe' by Slayr (depending on what else gets mentioned).

Please leave & like suggestions below! I'll do a couple today, a couple Saturday, and at least one on Sunday, so don't feel like you've missed out if you see this post a little late.

The better the write up, the better the chances (saying "do such-n-such" doesn't give me much to go off)

a bit late but how about 'The Slumdon Bridge' by Ed Sheeran and Yelawolf. It came out in 2011 before either of them had really made it big. Yelawolf had just signed to Shady Records, and Sheeran had just moved to the US. Yelawolf did a interview about it in the last couple of years and he had no idea who Sheeran was at the time.

Very soulful at times, haunting at ofhsrs, jazz influenced another with amazing guitar and piano it’s amazing. Please give it a try Boldy is very worthwhile so is Rome

It's a little bit longer than an EP at 36 minutes, but Alone at Prom by Tory Lanez is a phenomenal album. There is also a deluxe that adds 10 songs and brings the total runtime to an hour 10 minutes if you wanted to do a full reaction to it later

I'll throw out 3 extremely different projects: Action Bronson x Harry Fraud - Saaab Stories Aesop Rock - Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives Benny The Butcher - The Plugs I Met Saaab Stories: Not sure how familiar you are with Action, don't think you've done any of his albums before. He became big in the early 2010s, being a chef turned rapper (and TV Host) and had some controversy for sounding like Ghostface in his early days. This is a 25 minute long EP which is pure dope production and fun, unserious punchline rapping. Feels like a summertime type EP. Would be a great introduction to Action imo. The whole EP is excellantly produced by Harry Fraud, and it's featuring Wiz Khalifa, Prodigy and Raekwon (after the short beef AB had with Ghost was deaded) Aesop Rock - Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives: Slightly longer at 30 minutes, you know what you'll get with Aesop Rock. Of his earlier projects, this is one of his best produced ones imo, or at least most unique sounding ones. Production credit shared between himself, Blockhead and Rob Sonic. Featuring El-P and Camu Tao (who you've heard referenced by El-P on Thursday in the Danger Room) on the same track. One of my personal favorite Aesop Rock projects, even though most people will probably prefer a some of his albums, I personally think the short run time suits his dense lyricism. The Plugs I Met: Benny's second best project imo (right behind Tana Talk 4). Daringer, Alchemist ++ on production, featuring Black Though, Jadakiss, 38 spesh, conway, Pusha T ++. Really stacked lineup, every track and verse just hits. Peak griselda. You've done Conway and Westside Gunn, so Benny should be next in line! Sorry for the extremely long post.

Covert Coup by Curren$y Curren$y is a New Orleans artist who's been around for awhile now. Originally signed to No Limit with Master P he went on to be the first artist to sign to Lil Wayne's Young Money label before Drake and Nicki. He left the label shortly after and has been on a insane run of constant mixtapes and albums. Covert Coup is like his magnum opus. Completely produced by Alchemist. No hooks. Gritty beats and lyrics about cars, weed, motivation, and cool shit. Features one of Freddie Gibbs best verses ever and was highly praised by music blogs and magazines like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone when it dropped, an incredible feat when you consider Curren$y to this day is considered an underground act. The New York beats and New Orleans drawl compliment each other so well and it hasn't aged a bit in the 15yrs since it dropped. 10 tracks. 27min. You GOTTA check this one out Bob.... Please lol.

Less talk, More haze by femdot. & Gold Haze, is only 4 songs 10 min, but it’s 4 fantastic beats with femdot. Gliding over and reflecting on life. It’s his most recent project and I swear femdot. only gets better. Even through his discography, most of his albums are like 20 min! Free samples vol 3 and king dilla 2 are both fucking fantastic with amazing modern r&b/trap production and femdot. Just keeps coming with buttery smooth flows. Actually, yeah, U should listen to any femdot. Album :)

Xxxtentacion - Revenge (16 min) ) Revenge has X's most popular song (Look At Me) that made him a superstar. Other standout tracks from him on this EP are "I don't want to do this anymore" which was in every Sadboy Edit in 2017. Lastly "Yung Bratz" & "RIP Roach" ARE THE go to songs of his to mosh to when there's tribute concerts. The Ep has agood mix of songs like in "?" there's bangers and there's slower moodier moments.

Jane Remover - ♡ I know you've been meaning to listen to Jane Remover, and this EP is only 6 songs and 26 minutes that display a variety of some of her best work (hyperpop/rock/shoegaze/rap/rage). Over the course of her discography she has done different works pertaining to at least one of the genres I've mentioned under one of the many alias' she has: -Jane Remover is her main stage name and has some of her most popular releases. -leroy is another alias she has where she posts her "dariacore" tracks which is a genre she popularized which is a mashup/remix of various popular songs into a banger of a hyperpop song, hence why most leroy songs are on Soundcloud because of the uncleared samples. -venturing is her indie-rock/shoegaze side project used to release guitar-driven music separate from her main electronic discography. venturing is presented as a fictional 1990s indie rock band from South Dakota whose lost tracks were being archived by a fan named Violet. One of the tracks from this band is on the last song of the ♡ EP. She has a bunch of other alias' too, but these are the main ones, and I feel the ♡ EP is a strong culmination of all her work.

Old school MC Slick Rick put out an album last year called "Victory" (his first in 26 years)...15 tracks, 27 minutes. Very overlooked project with a couple features (Nas, Giggs, etc). I guess my write-up will focus on just how influential Slick Rick was to the rap game...he was the first MC (in the 80s) to really focus on the storytelling aspect or "the art of narrative" in hip-hop. The aforementioned Nas has frequently credited Rick for having a huge influence on his rapping. You can also hear his influence when you listen to Snoop Dogg, Biggie, Jay-Z, etc. Don't worry, the production doesn't sound dated or anything 😅 ... Tbh it sounds like he never left.

Would really love to see you do Fakemink London's Saviour. It's listed as an album but it's only 21 minutes. You seemed intrigued by Terrified and I think you'd be into the production on this project. It was the first music I ever heard from Fakemink and I was instantly hooked. I just thought the overall sound was so refreshing and not like anything I had heard before, while still being super listenable.

Bob the Poppop, I’d like to suggest a short 35 minute album called “TYRON,” by Slowthai. This is Slowthai’s second album, you’ve reacted to his third album “Ugly.” There’s 3 words I’d say describe this album; annoyed, guilt and rage. The album is divided into 2 discs and he said that each side was based on the two sides of Tyron, the person he was and the person he wants to be. Tyron is Slowthai’s first name and it makes perfect sense to use his name for the title as this album is seems to be personal. It blends classic grime like Dizzee Rascal which you’ve recently listened to and a more modern trap sound. This album features artists you’ve heard and have shown a liken to such as A$AP Rocky, James Blake, Kenny Beats and Denzel Curry. Typed this paragraph on my break from work so didn’t have time for a deep dive but hopefully it gets picked. Thank you for the entertainment and company provided, I really appreciate it.

I’d really reccomend House by Lupe Fiasco Bob. I know that Lupe has been difficult for you in terms of density and complexity. But I also know that you tend to enjoy him regardless. The thing about Lupe is that you don’t really have to actually understand it on your first listen or your hundredth. The appeal as you may know is that the lyrics are so rich and well written that you can ascribe almost any meaning and have that be the source of enjoyment. It’s not a cop out to say that his lyrics allow you to project whatever’s going through your mind onto them and it’s always fun to see you put those thoughts out there. I won’t give too much away about the EP itself but the important context is that he released it on a whim during COVID and it’s very much about that. But it’s not as straightforward as you would think which is the norm when it comes to Lupe. He uses metaphors, historical facts, external characters and a bunch of other literary tools to describe the collective feeling we all had during COVID so much so that you don’t have to be in that place to enjoy the EP. There is so much packed in 5 songs, so much meat in the bone that a 20 minute ep will take you around an hour or two to just the scratch the surface level. Those are my favorite Bob reactions. It’s also enjoyable to listen to, very smooth and laid back, he even got a beat from Twitter so the whole thing has a DIY quality to it. I think this would make for a great reaction and given that it’s ep week I’m not sure you’d find the time to do it at another point so please consider 🙏🏽

I think a reaction to bib sama.'s 18 minute project "GAIA" would be a fun react. In a similar fashion to slayr and Jim Legxacy (in my opinion), the whole project is a fun mix of different genres approached in a unique way such as: Jerk, EDM, and Hyperpop. He takes a more melodic approach to these very hype beats, and there are many earworms that are still stuck in my head one year later (dropped in 2025). He doesn't have many listeners, so I feel like repping this was important cuz a lot of people sleep on him. Hope you check it out!

Londons saviour by Fakemink An artist you’ve already heard, Londons saviour came out in 2023 when Fakemink was largely unknown and is completely different. Che - Empty Clip (5 songs, 12 minutes). Even though you didn't like Rest in Bass, this is a different sound. After you've dug into a bit more rage, it might click now. Fakemink - London's Saviour (9 songs, 21 minutes). The best Fakemink project. A much more chill and enjoyable listen than "Terrified." Future - 56 Nights (10 songs, 30 minutes). An essential future project, one of his best overall.

not hip-hop, but I think it might be an interesting change of pace if you listened to Nick Drake's Pink Moon classic and very influential singer-songwriter stuff, just under like 30 minutes; super meditative and stripped-down in terms of production, but never feels like it's missing anything at all, and has some insane guitar playing that took decades for other artists in this vein to replicate properly

The Alchemist has a few EPs that are worth checking out. “Flying High pt 1 and 2” feature a bunch of great artists (Earl, Billy woods, MIKE, action Bronson, Conway the machine, etc) and capture the broad range of artists he works with. Each are only a few songs (4-5). Another good Alchemist EP is “This thing of ours 2” which features MAVI, MIKE, Vince Staples, and Bruiser Brigade. Only 11 minutes! Freewave 3 by Lucki would be cool, i remember you not fully meshing with Watch My Back but this album shows a bit more development in Lucki’s writing over some really incredible production and is only 30 minutes. (Freewave and Freewave 2 aren’t Necessary) I also recommend Sayso Says by Che. Rest in Bass was NOT your cup of tea which is totally understandable, but Sayso Says with more unique production and a bit of a story being told around the second half. Only clocks in at 35 minutes. You should do Ariana Grande’s Petal! It’s pretty short (around 25 mins) and it’s a really different sound for her. It’s still pop/R&B, but way more atmospheric and electronic than what she usually does, with a lot of synths and drum machines and more subdued vocals. The whole album has this darker, almost dreamy feel while being about relationships, self-worth, fame, and finding hope after going through emotional stuff. I’d be really interested to hear what you think of it, especially since it feels like such a switch-up from her usual sound.

K

Jackboys 1 is Travis Scott’s label album (don toliver and others). Really big project with Mike dean production throughout, really cool outros and a really great project. Another I saw someone mention is revenge by XXXTentacion. That project features some songs that show his rage scene style which is what made him so popular in 2016/2017. You’re used to his slower and sadder stuff, but he was known as this crazy energetic rapper so it would be cool to see you react to that. Those are my top two recommendations. I don’t see why you should skip jackboys though, it is pretty freaking good and could pass as a studio album

Its beloved by both fanbases and probably the best use of the rap/metal mash up.
