Reacting to "Boy in da Corner" by Dizzee Rascal

Finally getting to what many have described to me as the "classic grime album" from the UK. Glad to sit down and give this one a full listen, definitely a very different experience from so many albums I've heard. I can see why this shook things up the way that it did.

Enjoy that weekend 🍻

i would sacrifice my first born child to watch or even hear your reaction to if looks could kill directors cut by destroy lonely especially since you loved 2093 so much. it's very atmospheric and uses A LOT of rock or metal guitars a lot of synths reverb and bass it almost feels like im in lost in a weird goth city with fog covering everything but scattered neon lights. some of the most incredible production i've ever heard my favorite album ever made

I joined the Discord to recommend this so long ago that I probably haven’t looked at it in over a year. I genuinely cannot overstate how gassed I was to see this review. It was interesting how much you referenced Pop Smoke going in. This is way before drill, which (despite what some people on the internet like to say) developed in Chicago with Young Chop and Chief Keef before becoming a globally adopted style. There are definitely similarities, but grime has its own lineage which fell into the pot with the aforementioned influences to birth UK drill (section/smoke boyz, 67, etc.). This style travelled back to New York and you get artists like Fivio Foreign, 22gz, Sheff G, and your fav, Pop Smoke. In middle school my parents got me 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Since this was the only hip-hop album in it I’d never even heard of, I went out of my way to listen to it. It’s been one of my favorite albums ever since and has had an outsized impact on my taste that lasts to this day. I got into Aphex Twin and IDM through THIS album. I WAS NERVOUS BOB IS BOBBING ALONG TO “STOP DAT.” HE IS NOT READY FOR THE REST OF THIS ALBUM. (recording edits as I watch.) Re: “What do you call it?” — Wiley (featured on “2 Far” and nicknamed the 'Godfather of Grime') has a song called “Wot Do U Call It?” that’s about this exact critical confusion in the early days of grime. I couldn’t help laughing when you got to that point. ...I had to pause as my whole time watching this channel has built up to the moment you press play on “I Luv U.” I genuinely may have to unsubscribe after this because there is nothing I want to see more than here than you experiencing this song for the first time. Chills. I was honestly tearing up a bit at the personal magnitude of this moment. I’m so excited this sparked an interest in grime for you. That was all I hoped for as an American who used to get made fun of for listening to it. If you’re looking for where to go next, Wiley* is the obvious recommendation since he and Dizzee were foundational to the sound. Beyond that: Chip, BBK (JME*, Skepta, Jammer, Frisco, etc.), Kano*, Newham Generals, Devlin, P Money, and countless others. (asterisk for my personal favs aside from skepta as you're already familiar with his later, and imo better style)
