rex - your debrid and Usenet library in every Plex app

rex is out for sponsors today! It's a media server that owns no files. Your movies and shows stay with your debrid service or Usenet provider and every Plex compatible app sees a normal server with posters, seasons, cast and your watch history.

There is no scanning. zurg tells rex what files it has and then every change after that, so a new release shows up in your library the moment zurg sees it. rex never opens a file to find out what it is because zurg probes it and sends the details along. A big library takes a few hours the first time.

Put a debrid account and a Usenet account each behind its own zurg and they end up in one Movies and one TV library. The same film from two sources becomes one title with two versions.

When you press play rex reads the file from where it lives and hands it on, so nothing gets downloaded first and it plays in its original quality. Give it FFmpeg and it also converts what a device can't play. A graphics chip makes that fast.

Watched state, Continue Watching, On Deck, playlists and collections all work and survive a restart.

I measured it on a rented server with 930 movies and 44 shows on Real-Debrid through zurg. The library is on screen in 0.53 s, a title opens in 0.32 s and search results show in 0.38 s, and rex used 269 MB of memory.

Builds are up for Linux, macOS and Windows. Start rex with a TMDB API key and your Plex token, add rex_url to your zurg config.yml and restart zurg. Keep rex's port off the open internet because anyone who can reach it can change its library.

FYI: it's movies and TV only, so no music, photos, Live TV or DVR. People you share it with see it the way you do, with your watch history. Converted video has no subtitles yet. Outside your home it needs HTTPS on a hostname you own since there's no relay, and keep a Cloudflare tunnel out of it because it makes every play read the whole file.

Sponsors get a GitHub invite to debridmediamanager/rex. FYI it'll take a couple of days to reach everyone. If you sponsor here on Patreon link your GitHub at https://gatekeeper.debridmediamanager.com so I know where to send it. Everyone else gets the first public release on Halloween, October 31, and then a new one on the last day of every month, 30 days behind the sponsor builds.

rex is an independent project and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Plex.

Hello, I have been using Stremio and Torbox occasionally and it’s been great. I have just seen the Rex - zurg - Plex option and through this would work amazing well. I’m running an older QNAP nas, is there a step by step guide on setting this up?

if I use usenet with zurg already, what does this do for me? does it just make it easier to use usenet and debrid together?
