Episode 13: Does Bob Lutz Count As A Problematic Fave [With Guest Liam McAnderson]

Hello! On this episode of Well Ther—I mean Tran Girlismo, the girls are joined by Liam McAnderson of the wonderful podcasts Ten Thousand Losses and Well There's Your Problem! First, Liam and Jordan commiserate about Pennsylvania sports and abysmal traffic infrastructure. Next, Victoria dives into her Charts Analysis of how unaffordable it is to own a car right now (very) from her article you can read on this very Patreon! Next, we get into the Tesla Roadster, which is apparently supposed to come out in like a week. Did you know how long Elon's been saying "next week bro"?

Finally, in honor of Liam's appearance, Victoria delves into the history of the Dodge Viper, the glorious machine that it is, and everyone chooses the chariot they would most want to spin out flaming into a wall with.

Note: We have some moments where the audio "skips" for names that shouldn't be said out loud, actionable threats, etc. It is intentional because bleeps are startling.

Our opening theme is from Horse Tranquilizer Simulator by Stella Spazzatura, as always!

If you build a Viper dealership next to a Navy or Army base, you'll sell a lot! Of Chargers. There's a specific class in Basic Training whose primary purpose is to drill recruits with DO NOT BUY A CHARGER. DO NOT BUY A CHARGER SCAT PACK.

I had a very similar commute to Liam for a bit, had to take an hour long regional rail out to Paoli, then a shuttle would take like 3 of us to an office complex. The guy was a retired Teamster and was a blast to talk to. This was a few years ago but I remember him saying, "I don't want any automation in the workforce, I'm against all this AI crap, BUT umpires have got to go, get in the robo umps now" and i think of him every ball and strike challenge now.

All the tesla semis were leased to snack food companies like PepsiCo because they can't handle hauling anything heavier than potato chips.

LIAM! Giulia Ti/Veloce with all the sport options, like the LSD+Adaptive Suspension. Lighter nose and a more reliable engine that's significantly easier to maintain, and you still get the excellent chassis with the suspension and diff the QV has. (Okay, only kinda on the diff depending on year). They're sub-$20k which is incredibly reasonable.

The terrible aspects of modern cars is why my new car is 20 years old. My old cars are only 50 to 60 years old!

Can confirm that Carmax does not do its homework. They bought our Nissan Versa that needed a new CVT and rear suspension for $300 less than the blue book price. Replacing that car is also how we found out how fucked the used car market is. We ended up with a Kia Niro hybrid that we're very happy with but it was only possible with family assistance.

Yeah the book is basically a series of peak boomer humor blog posts/newspaper opinion pieces that has a weird axe to grind with Alan Alda. My mom explained to me that quiche was seen as a pretentious food because it was the type of thing served in the cafes of fancy department stores like Neiman Marcus

The cold gas thruster thing is so dumb, but it would be funny/terrible if the roadster just blasted hydrazine. And with no pedestrian safety regulations in this country, I don’t see what’s stopping them.

Thank you for tackling this topic Victoria. I've felt like the industry has been in a doom spiral since COVID. In addition too inflation, manufacturers have killed smaller models for the sake of higher-margin crossovers and larger cars. With the K-shaped recovery it seems like they have up on the bottom part of the K in the pursuit of pushing margins higher for the top part of the K. Since we can never learn lessons most fuel efficient vehicles are no longer available during an impending fuel crisis (barring more expensive hybrid-electric models, but even those are biased towards crossovers). As a hatchback and small car enthusiast it's pretty disheartening.

I have a 2019 mini, and love the toggles!! I can flick a switch into speedy sport mode or flick a different switch over head like a plane to open the sun roof for fun and flirty mode. Down side of the mini is sooo many people want to race a girl in a speedy little car when I am literally just going to work :/

e
etienne · May 1, 2026

oh yeah there's this sicko cadre of Urbanist types who are way into roundabouts and it annoys me so much because those things SUCK like, we have a few ones here with TRAFFIC LIGHTS on them, like how bad do you have to screw up that you end up with traffic lights on a roundabout? not only they're awful to drive through but they are a absolute HARD ILLEGAL block to pedestrians who have to walk an extra block each way to use yet another pair of traffic lights crossings JUST MAKE IT A FLAT INTERSECTION jesus fucking christ

e
etienne · May 1, 2026

usally the ethos is "it's from europe so we won't do it even if it's good" but for some reason roundabouts make everyone go "it's from europe so we're going to do it even if it's really not good" baffling

The more I hear about the state of the auto industry, the more resolved I get to keep driving my early 2000s mini (with toggle switches) forever. I’ll just have to remember the hellscape of infotainment systems and absurd prices at exorbitant interest rates in the darker times

T
Tran Girlismo (& Victoria Scott) · May 1, 2026

to be fair the 2000s Mini has aged so well as a fun FWD sports car that's not a bad call at all

e
etienne · May 1, 2026

american transpo policy is like a absolute suicide drive, like, the cars CANNOT be small and cheap, the oil WILL remain hooked to the whims of the global markets, the public transit SHALL be denounced and dismantled as an enemy of the state, the cyclists MUST be repressed by vehicular violence, the worker is COMPELLED to be present to the work place without clear evidence they cannot fulfill their obligations from their home location, and the office is scheduled to be MOVED to a far outer suburban area where LAND is cheap. Are all of those goals completely against one another? yes that is correct
