Those wrinkles ain't nothin' to be scared of
[As promised, I'm handing the mic over to Brandon so that he can tell us all about his adventures in DLSS 5 land. -Luke]
Welcome to the wild west of AI and computing VR gang!
As a fellow enthusiast, I have been trying all kinds of stuff the last few days. But I think it is best to try and keep things simple and stick with things that are likely to work. By all means, explore and try things. But please do not go off expecting any and all addons and new shiny Reshade shaders to load up and work. But they just might!
The main goal here was getting DLSS 5 to work alongside R.E.A.L. and Luke has accomplished that goal. As have a couple others and I'll point out one in particular later, but for now, let's focus on making the most of the compatibility that Luke worked hard to add in.
That starts with a huge shout out to Luke! Thank you for all the hours you poured in the last few days! So now we can replace the fake people we enjoy with versions that look a bit more like the real people we sometimes have to pretend we enjoy. 馃a馃! (Happy Lobsters)
Good news, I was able to finagle an NR-only version of the CheekyFoveatedDLSS.addon created by ClarkCheekyKent. It seems compatible with a bunch of DX12 games that R.E.A.L supports so far. So Huge shout out to Clark for creating it in the first place! Original can be found here: This one did work in a few games already!
ClarkCheekyKent/CheekyFoveatedDLSS
It is not yet compatible with BG3 because of DX11, but I will try to see if I can change that. Even on success, the results can vary depending on how DLSS 5 NR works with that particular game. For instance, in Spidey 2, indoor and night scenes are quite noisy and terrible. But those same dark scenes seem perfectly fine in HOGWARTS! It will not work currently with CD as it breaks the color. I don't think it really shines in that game anyways. But if I am able to make more games work or improve anything, I will update here and push another release. Speaking of releases, you can find my forked version at the bottom of this post.
What does it do? Well, it basically allows you to shrink the area that NR uses to a particular cropped area of effect. You can control the size and placement of that area. Allowing you to save a bunch of performance. Of course, that depends on the affected area you set. It defaults to 40% coverage. It also has all the other extra sliders you can get for DLSS NR control, including intensity, color, paper whites and so on. Plus, a scale slider to lower the working scale to save more fps. 75% is a pretty good spot for quality plus a bit more fps. There is also a transition width slider that you can adjust to make the transition between the cropped NR area and the rest not as dramatic. Setting that to something like .1 makes it easier to ignore. Again, the credit for all of that goes to Clark, I just finagled some stuff and stripped some stuff like SR out to make it compatible.
Install is super simple.
1. You must carefully follow Luke's previous post to get Reshade with addons installed alongside R.E.A.L.
2. You will need to disable the RenoDX addon. This one also applies NR, so you don't want both fighting. So, either just delete renodx-dlss5.addon64 or rename to renodx-dlss5.addon64.off, if you want to keep it so it doesn't get recognized by Reshade.
3. Download my build (link below), "SomewhatCheekyFoveatedDLSS.addon64" and drop it in the same game folder as R.E.A.L. and Reshade.
If it works with that particular game, it should be that simple. It will hopefully appear in the Reshade UI under addons. Again, it defaults to disabled, so you will need to open up the menu at the bottom of the Reshade UI and then enable it. Do not enable NR at high resolution starting out! Start low. Honestly, 50% seems like plenty of coverage to me and you can move the cropped area up or down a bit depending on where you tend to look most. This version should put the cropped area in the middle of your headset view pretty reliably as long as all the sliders are zeroed out. I added extra X and Y sliders because the cropped area started way up in the left eye for AFOP with the original version. But now that it's fixed, there are too many. So, another big shoutout to Clark for the addon and a shoutout to me for too many sliders. 馃a馃! (Happy Lobsters)
It seems that the more resolution and detail you give DLSS 5, the better it looks. Remember, you can also use R.E.A.L.'s FOV limiting sliders to increase the PPD value of a given resolution. That can work to your advantage here as well.
If I were to recommend a backup option to try for DLSS 5 NR support with R.E.A.L. I would go with Tig3r Mast3rs Optiscaler fork, which also allows the option of also using his OFXR bridge (only with OpenXR runtime). You get the same high compatibility rate of the Optiscaler route, and you can decide if the interpolation with higher latency is worth using or just leave that part off. I was able to use it and play at a pretty high resolution compared to just full NR.
This is the (modified) guide he posted for it:
1 - use dlss swapper and change dlss ingame to 310.5.3 or newer and enable preset M, and set DLSS Performance in-game (Not sure if you are stuck with only using that preset?)
2 - obtain a copy of the DLSS 5 NR file and put in same game folder as the .exe file
3 - Download his Optiscaler build here https://github.com/tig3rmast3r/OptiScaler_DLSSNR_VR/releases/tag/v0.1.1-dlssnr-vr2 3b - Unzip into game directory and install using the bat file as winmm.dll
4 - Download his OFXR-Bridge here https://github.com/tig3rmast3r/OFXR-Bridge/releases/tag/v0.1.0 4b - Unzip anywhere, launch it, arm it and select nvidia (medium) backend + 50% OFA size (To arm it, you need to double click on it in the taskbar overflow area, you know that little arrow on the taskbar 馃槈)
5 - Open the game, press INS and enable DLSS5. Tested only Ghost of Tsushima atm but at least OFXR works almost anywhere with Luke's games.
FPS before this guide = 89 FPS after this guide with dlss5 = 89
But honestly after spending the last couple days trying to get Cheeky to work more reliably with R.E.A.L., I feel like I have already fallen behind and there are probably new options out there. For instance, there may be an Optiscaler fork with more options at this point, and you can just use his OFXR bridge with that.
Welcome to the wild west of AI and computing!
Most importantly. If you happen to use DLSS5 NR while gaming in the buff, don't look down!
[Update 1]
The newest release of my cheeky fork now supports BG3! In the addon UI, you will need to use "DX12 Transport" instead of "DX11 Direct" in the "DX11 game processing path" dropdown for this game. It is also very important that you hit your fps cap always or you will have judder/reprojection when moving your head. If you can't hit 90, use 1/3 or use a lower refresh if your headset has it.
This release also implements a before-SR pass option for NR. It applies NR on the image before upscaling which saves performance based on how much you are upscaling. You will lose a large chunk of AO and some quality with this route. But if you really want to apply NR to the whole image and already use DLSS upscaling, it can work as a cheaper version of NR. I'll look at adding a second pass in the next version.
The crash while using Ray Reconstruction with Star Wars Outlaws is now fixed.
Link for my Cheeky fork.

LOL, not best with tutorial how to install the DLSS5 with RealVR :D Having RealVR installed. Having downloaded your cheeky addon. Do i need inject renoDX through DLSS5 swapper? Then rename the DX file with yours? Thats it, or what? :D
Yes, the easiest way is to download the specific release version that Luke notes in his post and use that. It only has 2 options in that version. Feeder and RednoDX. Install the Native DLSS (RenoDX) path. You may need to select DX12 in the render API box to get it to show for some games, if it only gives you Feeder to install. If you use a newer version of 5 swapper it may have other install options like RenoDX (multipass), you don't want that or anything else it might offer. Ultimately, you need the dxgi Reshade file that gives you addon support that you will rename and the dlss nr file it installs. That is all you actually need to run addons like the cheeky addon.
Hi Luke and Brandon, thank you for this DLSS5, it gives you eye candy. My mind is blown away. I'm playing Hogwarts Legacy, I had some trouble at first with the game crashing at start up. I had to find out why, it took me some days to work on it so I found out that inside the Reshade folder of the game. there is a shader folder that holds the FX Files that work with The DLSS5 program. Here is the name of the FX file that making the game crash. ( ReShade.fxh, ) when I delete only this file, the game turns on. But you need these file to help run the other files that hooks on to Reshade and Real Framework Reshade, the FX files that's not being place in the Addons tab are all the Lumenite FX Files Addons, is keep breaking when I add the SomewhatCheekyFoveatedDLSS.addon64 . I have to remove the Reshade.fxh file to play the game with SomewhatCheekyFoveatedDLSS.addon64. Can this be fix's .? keep up the good work that both of you are doing thank you. I hope this helps other gammers
DLSS 5 swapper should only install dxgid.ll, the dlss nr file, Native DLSS (RenoDX) addon and the lab overlay addon. Make sure you are not letting swapper install the feeder or Reno multipass pathway. It should just say RenoDX with nothing else next to it. You may need to specifically select DX12 in the rendering API box if it doesn't give you that option. The version of DLSS 5 swapper that Luke mentions in the post only has two paths it will install, feeder or RenoDX. Swapper could add in any number of things, so I'd actually just recommend using the exact version Luke mentions for now. In reality, you just want the Reshade file that allows addons, the DLSS NR file and then the cheeky addon. The overlay addon doesn't conflict, but any other addon that calls NGX like RenoDX will.
so I came to the conclusion that steam vr is so shit or I am too stupid to make it work with Dream Air most likely both , I cant deal. Deinstalled. So far all runs well with AUTO VR Runtime Oculus Rift emulation - one question though - in Dead Space I cant restrict FOV - left optimization box I think it was vertical is greyed out, right box is ticked (horizontal optimisation) but restricting it via the 2 sliders - both options - greyed out - why? you know?
Maybe your missing something in SteamVR settings. Try clicking the 3 hamburger in the upper left. Then click settings -> start up/shut down. Click on "manage add ons." Then shut everything off but "Pimax" for native pimax drivers, or "customheadsetOpenVR" for Sboys3 drivers. Also, I only tried the FOV sliders in the REALframework, those did work for me (in 007). Never tried messing around with the FOV sliders in the pimax software, I don't think those worked when I did with RealVR.
I want to purchase a Bigscreen Beyond 2 mostly for playing games with Lukes framework and watching movies, because the Steam Frame is not much better than my Quest 3. Has anyone experiences with Bigscreen Beyond 2 and Lukes framework? Does it work? Is it good, better visuals than Quest 3 with the micro OLED display and higher res?
Would be a lot better to include a installer that downloads and sets it up for the vr mod , or a drag and drop package with everything needed
We'll see about that when DLSS 5 is available officially for our beloved games. I'm not going to make an installer for community-driven experiments that change and break every day. Even if Brandon was able to make it somewhat smooth, it's still a hack over a hack and NVIDIA might even object to have its leaked library packaged in an installer available on a Patreon page.
What previous post about getting reshade installed? the last post was about getting DLSS5 swapped and I want reshade but not dlss5. Can someone point to a guide on how to get reshade installed please
It also installs Reshade with addons, which is how DLSS 5 ends up working. It works through the RenoDX addon that Reshade uses. Since Reshade is installed, you can also use it as regular old Reshade with shaders. It just has the added bonus of addons if you want to use them. If you follow the post and hit the home button, you will see the normal Reshade UI pop up with whatever shaders pack you installed and addons. We don't know what will actually load from the current Reshade shaders but you can now at least try them to see what loads and what doesn't.
Whares the post to get reshade with add ons. I tried doing the following setups mdntioned above but couldnt find the post regarding this section and completely ruined it. I had to revert to 25.2 release of realvr. So no ray construction. I have just completely deleyed saved games, uninstalled ubisoft loader and reinstalled just to clear it from crashing at startup
The Patreon post right before this one :") The Wrinkle Slider. Never delete your saves without backing them up! This should be a very easy install and if it messed up, just delete the Reshade and addon files. Make sure you install the DX12 RenoDX route, do not install the new RenoDX (multipass) option.
Hi i read a few days ago that one could just take the reshade files from the dlls5 dlssoneclick, and replace those shaders in the real vr reshade folder. Add the dlls 5 models into the game folder . Rename it appropriate and use renodx32.addon to run gameswith dx9 support. Is that true?
Not sure about DX9 support, give it a shot and let us know. What game are you thinking of and what are you trying to do with the addon for it?
Hey, I Installed everything and followed the path to get DLSS 5 running for Kingdome come Deliverence 2. The DLSS5 Swapper is waiting for RenoDX so it does not activate its Magic...any ideas how to solve this ?
Does Reno show up in the addons UI? If so, do you have it ticked on? Did DLSS5 swapper install using DX12 and Reno and not feeder?
I got OFXR working on CD DLSS balance mod
Yeah, I think some people will definitely enjoy using it. Especially without DLSS NR :) To make the game more playable at higher settings etc.
i cant it to work afop crashes i am using htc vive pro 2 head set if thats the reason i have a 5090. any help would be appreciated
Is that SteamVR native? Can you put a copy of your RealVR64.log file on pastebin and post a link here?
In FFR i have double vision on the overlay and also the HUD and the hole Menu. The Game itself looks great tho. I'm using the Pimax Dream Air Slam. Someone any ideas what could causing this.
Are you using Sboys3's Steam Driver and EVO? Or just using PimaxXR? You will need to run either Oculus runtime or with Sboys3's driver. If you are just going with Pimax play or EVO without Sboys, you will need to have the Meta Link app installed on your system, so you have the dll files to run Oculus runtime with the Pimax headset.
I have no idea what that post said. RenoDX, Optiscaler, OFXR-Bridge? Please don't make VR mods too complicated.
is a quite experimental phase you can just ignore and play the way you have always played till now.
Clarkcheekykent was able to make a self healing / updating conversion for forza horizon 6 and it worked on last update by rehooking cameras on first launch after update then restart and it works again. Is there any way that could be implemented into your framework Luke? Im excited to try your framework now with this added
things changes so fast that after 2 days all the stuff you have done is obsolete already: i don't know if Cheeky has added already the pre SR pass but the key change is that, basically you do the neural pass before DLSS super resolution at a fraction of the cost with pretty much equal result or with negligible difference. The Optiscaler linked by Brandon above here already has that feature and you'll get better performance than using any kind of foveated window, at least until Cheeky adds that feature too on his project, if he hasn't done it already. That optiscaler is going to work only with Luke's reshade and hopefully native dx12 games with DLSS, i will try to extend compatibility in the future.
The pre SR pass is something that made it incompatible with most games unfortunately.
You guys have already gone above and beyond, but would it be possible to work with cheeky author and upstream your changes, so when CD is fixed you don't have to keep building new binaries/releases from your fork. Hopefully I'm not jumping the gun here, but i opened an issue https://github.com/ClarkCheekyKent/CheekyFoveatedDLSS/issues/21 about it I got your fork of Cheeky working in Hogwarts and Elden Ring so far, and mind blown. Doing 50fps with DLSS 5, (or 100fps with VRD SSW) Unless NVIDIA does some kind of miracle optimization to DLSS5, its Cheeky all the way for me, until my next GFX card. (I have a 5080, so i can't be the only one thinking this)
As luke's is reshade already it would be nice to integrate or at least declare compatibilty with a PreSR DLSS5 reshade addon, or make is own .addon64, open source, getting the stuff that has been made already by other people and tie it for his (closed source) framework.
I must admit I'm a little bit confused by all this info (last couple of blogs), I'm just a simple gamer. What games does this is work with at the moment and how does it improve them?
There's a ton of tinkering involved, anyone who asks this kind of question, you may as well just wait for the official DLSS 5 release from NVIDIA. We're all running alpha software that was 'accidentally' leaked. Nobody has a full list of game compatibility yet, but it seems to work with most games.
This is very cool!!! Ive been using clarkcheekykents forza horizon 6 vr conversation and its great
just read both blog posts... wowww! testing with hogwarts first
Ooohhh, I am going to try that out as soon as I wake up!! 馃a馃!
LOL
