YES, the Blue Angels. Every year for something called Fleet Week, they come to San Francisco and fly pretty...over the WATER mostly. The first time they did that I was working in a downtown high-rise. They went under the Golden Gate Bridge and over a very rich neighborhood. They went between high-rise buildings and you could see the window washers clinging to the building. It was awful. 😡 Our mayor got on the phone with the Navy and told them to cut it the fuck out and they never did that again. San Francisco knows stupid and calls it out 👊🏽👍🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

If people want airshows with warbirds, they should consider buy a PC, a HOTAS, pedals, run DCS or War Thunder, and build their own motion rig. Every serious pilot will say that a warbird is not compatible with the logic of airshows...bye 😅👋🧹

Several times i have watched the Fourth of july Air show at Jones Beach Long Island and Coney Island Brooklyn They always stayed over the water not over the people on the beach. Congress woman spoke to pilot according to article i just read. “I had the opportunity to talk heart to heart with the pilot at the center of it all,” Salzman wrote. “He didn’t make excuses. He didn’t try to shift blame. He simply talked about the miscalculated a turn, something no pilot ever wants to experience, especially one who has dedicated his life to flying at the highest level of precision. More than anything, he talked about the weight he’s been carrying since that moment.” The pilot, she wrote, “was shaken” by the miscue that did not meet the team’s “incredibly high standard and was deeply affected by falling short of it.” Note the unit commander was not happy with the miscue. Article in Task and Purpose.

It is very common for military pilots to eventually leave the military to fly for an airline. The pay is much better and you can live in a better choice of cities and raise a family without being moved around every few years. However the airlines are extremely careful who they hire and look very closely at their previous flying experience, drunk driving tickets, any other criminal history. Emotional stability critical. If this dangerous stunt is on this pilots history a top level airline will not hire them since they exhibited reckless dangerous behavior outside the rules. No airline wants a “top gun” character.

There was the case in Italy where an American jet pilot tried to fly under a gondola cable, and cut the cable. People died. American officials defended that idiot.

Tom Campbell · July 17, 2026

Hey Denys, do you ever get a sort of ‘wet’ feeling in your leg (no silly bloody comments please) when you’re driving? See, I’ve been living with Multiple Sclerosis for about thirty years any that, with sore back, was the first symptom! So yes, GET IT CHECKED ! !!!!

B

What about first green industries and the defense line!

M
Mr. Probot · July 16, 2026

Omg I know back pain... GL with that Denys, and yes, stay active, keep moving! Fullycagree with your take on those numnuts and I respected you a lot already but loads more now hearing about your principled take on safety during your career. Not to be too Germanic about it (and don't you dare call me a German, either way ;P), but there's a VERY good reason for rules & order and this is CERTAINLY a context where it applies STRONGLY - great job, Sir!

One or two low choppers close to the beach is something I saw routinely in Florida 60 years ago. Two low jets showing off over the beach goers is a different matter. Anti submarine P2 aircraft patrols low and close by the beach were routine then as well. Probably from Jacksonville/Mayport NAS.

M
Mr. Probot · July 16, 2026

They were not close to the beach, but flying right over the shoreline, as well. Cannot be.

P
Peter B. · July 16, 2026

The wingspan of an F/A 18 is 40'. From judging the still from the vid as the aircraft banks over the beach, it is about 2 times the wingspan away from the people and the ground, i.e. the fuselage is roughly at 100' AGL - during my career at that time a reprimanding would be the least to happen, possibly loss of pilot license for recklessly endangering civil population and a combat aircraft. I count numerous military aircraft lost on airshows during my career as well as thereafter - and a SecDef supporting this behavior is a full blown idiot - full stop!

For you back, consider a desk that lets you switch to standing mode. It really helps when you have longer screen sessions for work. Just don’t forget to switch modes now and again - standing too much is not good either

In the US in my generation the pilots, majority who went commercial aviation seemed VERY careful. Come to think of it, one of my friend’s horrific assignments (probably intended by his superiors as offering long-term opportunities for advancement) was being assigned to fly senior officers and high status officials around the nation (and world) I guess. His first love, however, was flying jet fighters. But I don’t see how these cowboys could survive in wartime combat. They don’t seem to have the common sense and self control, even if they had to pull stunts and do kind of wild things in combat. Even Chuck Yeager was very safety conscious. At one time, every airline pilot even SOUNDED like Yeager, even if they didn’t grow up as a poor boy from West Virginia.

Mr. Probot · July 16, 2026

Yes, the most exciting of Denys' days were the administrative parts of his career.

I am 78. I first saw the blue angels when I was 7 y.o. At the naval base near Key West Fla. 1954-55. Armed Forces Day, I believe. Also could tour a submarine, probably a WWIi vintage. Remember that the Korean War ended in the summer of 1953. In the 13 years from 1941 to 1953 the US was in a major war for 8 years. By the way, my high school was practically a feeder school for the Air Force (lower middle class/working class student body). A friend of mine got into the Air Force Academy and served for more than 20 years. He would have gone nuts over the crazy behavior you were complaining about. He was also proud about the Air Force’s organization and planning for facilitating the incorporation of women into the force as a fighter pilots.

The Blue Angels are the US Navy's flight demonstration team and among the best in the world. They have a show routine component called "The Sneak" where the audience is focused on a plane doing maneuvers in front of them, then suddenly an unexpected aircraft zooms low and fast from behind them. This video feels like part of that process, however it's all much lower than normal. The Sneak is just loud and sudden, giving people a surprise, but in the dozen or so time I've experienced this it's never been lower than 100m.
