Returning to this because I recently watched a video about some beef between streamers which included one guy finding the other guy's mom's phone number and calling her on stream. And to my delight, the video then recounted how JayStation jumped on this and made a video where he pretended to also call that guy's mom, at 3 am!

This is a video I rewatch all the time and thus have the phrase, “what’s more important…success…or your grandma?” burned into my brain; I can’t get over it.

I know this is an older video but I was rewatching and have some fun stuff to add. First of idk if the other comments have mentioned this but boots is like a large highish end drug store. The kind of place that working class people go to to get gift beauty stuff and that maybe middle class people might get their beauty stuff from regularly. It very much has department store vibes. Secondly my family has has that exact same sarcophagus as jaystation since before I was born and Jenny is completely correct you do in fact forget about the sarcophagus. There have been so many times that I have had guests over and been surprised for a second when they come over and ask about what the sarcophagus is (they're cd and dvd cases) because I am so used to the fact that the sarcophagus is there that it never registers on my radar. My parents house is pretty badly made and has a lot of issues that end up with us having a lot of ghost story's but in a paranormal homes inspectors way. And I have so so many times warned guests about the stuff that is gonna seem creepy but is actually just fine only for them to get here and be surprised that in that tour I completely neglected to mention the sarcophagus. We do however always remember to decorate her for Christmas and Halloween

I actually remember that simplykenna scandal - not only did she claim to draw those tattoos herself, but she bullied and sent her followers after others who “copied her” (one of which was publicly dealing with the death of a family member at the time). She actually did release a second apology that was good! Only to admit later that a random person in her inbox actually ghost wrote it for her (which is why I remember it so viscerally)

Thank you to all of the comments for (semi-)justifying my visceral disgust of the flower crown girl's apology...seems she never did anything irredeemable, but she does sound like an *incredibly* exhausting type of person. (For any other latecomers who don't want to plumb the comments, sounds like her biggest sins outside of the crappy apology were 1) regularly tracing/copying other people's art while being extremely defensive about her own brand, 2) indulging in fujoshi shenanigans while being vocally asexual, and 3) revealing she's autistic to justify some of her behaviour after getting called out. None of these things are explicitly bad by themselves, but they do paint a picture of a very annoying personality type, IMO)

My big thing with apology videos having cuts is like. Okay if the whole video has cuts and its edited the way you edit a video, thats fine and normal. but if there's ONLY ONE cut. thats weird. you can do all cuts or no cuts, but if its inconsistent then it does feel wrong

This is one of my favourite rambles, I come back to it a lot. And it still astounds me how weird and intense people get about the polls. I usually vote in the poll for whatever I think looks cool and then literally don’t think about it again until the ramble comes out. It’s kinda wild to me how obsessive people can get about literally anything.

I work at a service desk full time and that's always the first thing on my mind. I think Jaystation’s strategy was to minimize his offenses by revealing worse treatment to his family members. I think it’s weird but may actually be somewhat effective. If I had found something he did/said on YouTube hurtful or offensive (I probably would have; but I hadn’t heard of this guy before watching this video.) and then I saw this I think my reaction would be, “Oh, he’s hurt his family. Whatever I felt is negligible.”

I just looked up the Simply Kenna tattoo issue. It was that a fan asked her if they could also use the tattoo design and she responded “No,” and that it was personal to her. And THEN, people looked it up and found it was originally another artist’s work.

I don't know if it's just because I'm Neurodivergent but I always write down what I want to say when I have a conflict with someone. It helps me to have prepared talking points so I don't get overwhelmed or flustered and forget things or start to let my emotions take over during the conversation

oh my god no u don’t understand I was there for the SimplyKenna drama; that “poem” video was BYE SISTER to me !!! but anyways if I remember right, she was accused of all sorts of stuff. One of them was claiming that certain art was her own original art when it turned out to be from Pinterest (same w her tattoos) and she’d like tell ppl they couldn’t even print “her art” out to put on their wall without crediting her (to where, I’m still not sure). She also “attacked” this creator who went by Lunestelle(? I think) bc they had the same “aesthetic” & she thought she “owned” it. She also “appropriated” a lot of Buddhist practices (it’s kinda complicated, she identified as Buddhist but she had Buddha head statues which are offensive in Buddhist culture so she was called out for being performative). Similar situation in another case where ppl think she “fetishizes” Japanese culture or people. (Just to be clear, I’m not making any opinions one way or another on if she did these things but what I do care about is that) she ended up making another apology video for that “poem” video (supposedly it was generally taken well bc she followed the advice of her critics but then she ends it by saying she monetized it lol) and then completely rebranded to Cozy_Kitsune.

I think Jenny's apology video for not releasing FNAF/ending the apology video with an apology is B tier. To use her rubric: - Jenny clearly states what she's apologizing for - Jenny doesn't have a prepared statement and there's a lot of verbal ellipses to understate the impact. - Jenny uses a lot of ironic / self-referential / jokey tropes to minimize the grievous offense (inefficiently making a video about a topic I don't even care about but will watch repeatedly) I feel like it could have been raised to S tier if, instead copying the YTer who covered the webcam with their hand, she instead spontaneously improvised rhyming couplets.

I have to put this out in the universe in the hopes that maybe Jenny will see it. Jenny, I would be forever grateful to you if you did an American Girl deep dive video essay.

I have to admit that I didn't know who most of these people were until some of them became famous/infamous for their bad apology videos. Even now, I'm still not entirely sure what some of them are about, and because I was never interested in them in the first place and don't have a great memory for names, I'll probably just think of them forever as Those People with the Apology Videos.

I do love that sarcophagus. I don't like the apology or the person delivering it in that scene; I just really like the idea of having a room with a sarcophagus in it. I wouldn't want a real museum piece in a private home, but there is something delightfully eccentric about wanting a human-sized piece of decor to make your room look more like a museum. Jaystation's choice to wear a shirt that says "Heaven Don't Want Me" while making a public apology is also interesting.

I think Jenny makes some good points about apology videos and calls attention to some of the reasons why people are very cynical about apology videos and, sometimes, apologies in general. Apologies fall flat when the person is apologizing for something that they have done repeatedly, for behavior that they have made a staple of their public image, and for behavior they continue to do. Apologies also come off badly when the person apologizing tries to use the apology to deny what they did or for self-promotion, accuse other people of being the problem because of way they reacted to what they did (or the fact that they reacted at all), try to hide behind the idea that they made a "mistake" rather than a deliberate choice when people can tell it really was a bad decision that they made as a deliberate choice (doubly so when they are known to have ignored protests and advice not to carry forward with their bad decision), and/or show more concern for their own feelings than those of other people. I think that the ability to apologize sincerely is a vital life skill that can also be a potentially career-saving move, but I also think that too many people in our society have not learned this skill and that some are directly opposed to learning it. One of the hardest things about a sincere apology is accepting the fact that you feel bad about yourself because of what you did, and some people try too hard to avoid feeling bad at all, so they can't adequately work through and resolve their feelings or address the feelings of the other people involved. I think people get the idea that, if you feel bad about yourself for something you did, you must hate everything about yourself and your life, but that's blowing it out of proportion. A temporary bad feeling that motivates you to change your behavior for the better in some way is normal and healthy. A sincere apology also includes taking responsibility and making some kind of restitution or behavioral change to remedy the problems the person caused, and I think too many people are afraid to do that because they think that it will cost them too much in some way and that they won't be able to handle it. Again, it's blowing things out of proportion. So many problems could be resolved if people would deal with them earlier, when they're smaller, instead of digging in deeper or blowing them up with their own overreaction.

I remember the Fine Brothers controversy, and the thing that made people really mad was that they had already misused the copyright strike system to try to take down a smaller channel that posted a video in one of their formats before they even did it themselves. It really made them look bad, even if it wasn't as heinous as it could have been.

This is very topical now for my county: in the past 2 weeks in Hungary we had a political scandal, which resulted in the president and two former ministers stepping down. Their "apologies" were the worst, and would have been in the bottom among the ones you included.

I remember simply Kenna- idk when this happened but she definitely traced over a drawing and pretended like it was her own original drawing(as a logo for the fifth Harry Potter house she made up), then at some point got in trouble for following a guy around a store recording him because she thought he was attractive. I think that happened in Japan, it was another country and she also in general had an issue with obsessing over/fetishizing Asian people. That’s what I remember from her controversies anyway. My friends and I watched her apology videos at the time and could not stop laughing

My partner and I (together 4 years now) realized that just texting each other during arguments helps. It sounds insane and impersonal but you're right that writing your thoughts out forces you to be more intentional in the things you say during fights.

Hives are THE WORST. I broke out into full body hives my junior year of high school. That was over 10 years ago now and I still shudder when I think about it. Okay, so I've been thinking about Jenny's poll business. I haven't even finished the video yet! I'm not even on the Voting Committee, but I love a riddle. Let's suppose Jenny has 4 weeks to make the poll and the video. And Week 4 is for recording and editing the video, so: >Week 1: a normal poll with four options, visible results, people strategizing, and so on. Fun and chaos. >Week 2: the "cut week." Jenny blindly chooses a day from 1 to 7 to cut the poll and take the two most-voted options. This way Jenny can't be accused of "cutting" while her favourite was winning, and bad-faith actors can't really predict when the poll will close, so they can't really rig it. >Week 3 (+ the remaining Week 2 days) is just a blind A vs. B poll between the two most voted. A blind poll because I think it's fun that the finished video being released is when you finally find out if your favourite has won (and you can't really strategize with two options anyway). And if "A vs. B" ends in a tie, just flip a coin! This way I think you have the best of both worlds, with the thrill and strategy during the first week and the intrigue at the end. wow, seeing that old Simply Kenna apology video was a SHOCK to my system. Didn't expect to come in being the resident expert, but I definitely remember her uploading a follow-up apology video apologizing for the insincerity of the poetry apology 😂 The second apology was just her talking to a camera, and she more clearly stated what she apologized for. I'm just going off memory, but I'm pretty sure people were mad that she 1) made a video giving guidance on Buddhism after only picking up the religion within the past few years, 2) was not giving proper credit to artists, 3) seemingly fetishized fictional and real-life male/male ships (often anime or K-pop boys) after coming out as asexual, and that seemed hypocritical. Lastly, not saying this as an excuse, just wanted to share more context, but a few years after the original apology videos, she came out with a video saying she got diagnosed with autism or aspergers or something at the age of 23, and that's why she often has trouble reading emotions or expressing emotions. Anyways she doesn't upload much anymore but I follow her on ig because I find her visuals really calming. Also sorry if someone already said all this, I didn't read all the comments yet. I didn't even notice the sacrophagus in the JayStation video until Jenny pointed it out and then I practically choked on my salad. Also! I broke out in hives a while back too! Around late 2022, and it was horrible! I actually went to emergency care late at night because it also made my joints insanely swollen and inflamed until I literally couldn't use my hands or move my fingers, I thought I was coming down with some kind of insane case of tendonitis or something. I went to several doctors until I even figured out it was hives and to this day I have not a single goshdarn clue what caused it, and I don't even have any allergies. And I was also told it might just be stress even though it wasn't like... an exceptionally stressful time for me back then. My aunt (who is a nurse) said it could also be caused by eating less-than-fresh food, and I admit i do kind of have a very bad habit of not throwing food away even when it's not really fit to eat, but I'm not sure if that's it. Anyway, if this sounds weirdly overenthusiastic, its because that was a uniquely horrible experience for me and I am happy not to be alone in it and wanted to commiserate.

Jenny you should look into histamine intolerance!! I started getting allergic reactions out of nowhere around the time I was planning my wedding (very stressful period in my life) and it turns out that I have an issue processing histamines in my body. There are certain foods that can make it worse (avocados are a big one for me, they're super high in histamine). I got psoriasis for the first time allll over my face, digestive issues, stabbing ear pain, and whenever I tried to do any sort of cardio, my tongue and throat would swell up and I'd get pins and needles all over my body. It was really scary and none of the doctors I saw had any idea what was going on until I went to an immunologist and got on an elimination diet. No idea if you could be facing something similar but I thought I'd put it out there in case any of this sounds familiar to you!

That said, a several minute explanation about why you are sick and tired of people fucking around on your polls sucks and is exhausting. I was on Twitter and I saw a video of a beloved childhood icon slap a neurodivergent man for making an insensitive joke about a woman's disability, and all the participants were Black, at the Oscars, and my mind unfolded like Harrier Du Bois' mind palace. I could see all the discourse threads branching out, all the tweets scrolling over it like a ticker tape, I could see the Youtube hot take video titles and the rubble of the social justice wasteland, and the word "canceled" blaring over it like an air raid siren, and the sheer exhaustion made me reflect on all my time spent on social media, and I decided, No. No more of this. No more twitter, no more takes, no more callouts, no more digging through fifteen layers of increasingly unhinged Tumblr tea blogs for yellowed receipts, no more. Never again. I'm good on discourse for the rest of my life. The Slap changed my life. So who's to say if it was bad?

You could probably end the polls within a day of posting it - even within the space of an hour you can see which one is the most popular and it basically never changes. Whether that's because people can see what others voted for or one just catches the collective mood, it's pretty consistent

The simply kenna thing was mainly this running theme of hers for posting art that was just traced images of someone else’s work that she’d slightly altered. The main one I remember that triggered the apology was that she created a logo for some shop (makeup I believe) she was running and the logo was made from someone’s art and the artist called her out and everything else unravelled. Ellen's apology annoys me so much; she makes noises as though she's admitting to being mean and mistreating her workers, but what she literally says is more "I get angry, I get frustrated..." etc. Like, yeah, we all feel those emotions. We don't all take them out by treating people badly. I hate when people blame universal inputs for their specific bad output.

Extra context for Ellen: I believe in addition to the meanness criticism, there were allegations that some of the show staff had extremely negative experiences with some other staff which were not directly her fault (or even something she knew about) but did happen under her leadership. This makes part of her apology about the failings of that, not just “I’m sorry you experienced something bad” as a vague way to refer to her own meanness.

For three winters in a row I broke out in hives mysteriously like every day and I deduced that it was probably from being slightly overheated in the house when the heater went on! It would get worse when I took a hot shower. But then I moved and didn’t get any hives the following winter so it could have been environmental. Anyway store brand non drowsy fexofenadine antihistamines are my bffs, hope the hives don’t return!!

Part of the issue with Zoella’s advent calendar was that she was operating a lifestyle brand where she sold perfume, candles, bath products, etc. and almost none of that was in the box. I think it only had one candle from her collection and the rest was random stuff. The one thing that got people really mad was a little bag of confetti 💀

I was delighted when I saw the note that Jenny also got the Bonne Maman jam advent calendar. I've gotten it the last two years and I love it. The flavors are unique and there wasn't a ton of overlap between the two years. There were maybe 5 or 6 flavors out of 24 that were repeated. The flavors are unique ones too, like cherry-hibiscus or orange-guava-lime. It's a little pricey at 50 dollars retail but sometimes Costco carries them for like 35ish. Anyway, I highly recommend! They're great quality jams and always yummy even when the flavor combos seem odd.

Still, your track record shows that you try to oblige us in good faith. I think it's fair for you to include evidence of weird voting patterns before choosing a winner. As for "low-cost" solutions, I think the only ones that scale are to disable vote changing or limit us to one vote. I understand why you don't like those options. I'm up at the Colleen Ballinger apology and Nicholson is talking about her make up and I'm waiting to see if she realises it's a filter (I've seen claims that Ballinger said she didnt notice it was on while Gabi Belle said she has used the same filter in post production editing for clients) because there is something weirdly poetic about facing her accusers with a face that's digitally manipulated. Like, it's a small quibble but when should face smoothing/auto make up filters be used in apology videos, if it wasn't for the uke which was bloody distracting, would it not just have added more fuel to the "she's hiding in plain sight" "her audience doesn't see her true face" type criticism of her behaving inappropriately with children/under age fans. Maybe the vote cutoff should just be 11:59 p.m on the last day of the month, that way new people signing up to the voting level after the first cant come in and change the results. Thats what seems to have happened this month. It keeps it so you get 1 ramble poll vote per month subscribed, instead of coming in at the start of a new month, voting in the previous month’s poll, and voting in the next months poll on just 1 month pledged at the $5 level.

Re: the polling thing, have you considered approval voting? Basically this is where people have the chance to vote for as many options as they’re interested in, and then you just pick the option that gets the most votes, even if it’s not a majority. Idk if this is a possibility in Patreon but it might be a possible solution.
