It occurs to me that they may have made Sanbo a Togruta rather than a “dude with a scarf on his head” because imagineers May have thought people couldn’t get behind a humanXRodian relationship. To which they are mistaken. I want to kiss Oanni.

I would love if Jenny uploaded this video on the main channel. I understand the reasons not to, but to this day I see people complaining about the Star Wars video using the same arguments that she addresses here. I guess it's people that just can't accept or deal with the fact that it failed and will still find ways to complain about Jenny and blindly defend the SWH, but it will be funny to see them ranting in the comment section and being debunked by everybody else 🤣

Booking should have involved which team you wanted to play to evenly distribute guests among cruises evenly and instead they offer the best dates, not you inquiring with a date in mind. If you wanted to change teams upon arrival, it’s free to do with guest services.

Apropos of nothing, there's this thing about Star Wars that's always felt odd to me. It feels like EVERYBODY is a frikkin pilot. Anakin; Anakin's son, Luke; Luke's friends; Harrison Ford and his son; Darth Vader; Rey; Poe... i wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that kid with the broom and the guy who's 3 inches tall are pilots too. Everybody! It's kinda like how everybody is related to everybody else. It makes the Wars world seem so small. Anyway, it reminds me of the Rocky franchise. It just seems like there are too many boxers who all seem to know each other, and they're ALL contenders? The Russian guy is a boxer, then so is his son and they both get into feuds with champion boxers. Apollo's a boxer, and his son is a boxer, and they're both world champions. Creed Jr's best friend from childhood becomes a champion too. Rocky runs into a random kid on the street, that guy becomes a world champion boxer. Rocky's son didn't become a professional boxer, but he learned to box anyway. Is boxing genetic or something?

a
a.s. · February 12, 2026

hmmm ok i have no involvement with star wars whatsoever, im playing george's advocate bc i thought this comment was interesting: does that imply the star wars universe is simply industry/military-dominated to a degree that being a pilot is equivalent to having any job involving cars in our universe? like famously mass-produced spaceships are equivalent to generic sedans so is having a spaceship functionally just a car? what are the implications of ''pilot'' as a job title being diluted in this way-- is it like the oceangate ''mission specialist'' thing lol

Jenny’s point about some influencers talking like paid shills on purpose even though they aren’t paid is one of the most depressing but irrefutably true things I’ve ever heard

Yeah, those criticisms of “you should demand a better seat” are particularly unhinged, it basically comes down to: “Use your leverage to demand some lesser human gets a crappy seat so you can give Disney a good review.”

ig i headcannoned that ytbrs didnt get nervous about receiving thousands of comments on their videos because if that were me i would go insane. i get anxious just from having an opinion and seeing people disagree with it even if i didnt post about it. so i thought public figures must be so sure of what theyre saying they dont feel that way bc otherwise they would be miserable all the time. y
yazzle · May 11, 2025

Coming back from trawling the corners of reddit again, I found a link to this post about someone's Starcruiser experience in 2022, and wouldn't you know it was basically exactly what Jenny experienced. https://www.reddit.com/r/WaltDisneyWorld/comments/v82lyj/galactic_starcruiser_reportback_genuinely_feel/ They even say almost the exact same thing she did about how they backed themselves into a corner with the shitty accommodation because it's hard to think of any reasonable way to charge what those rooms are actually worth and still make a profit on them. It also strikes me that this is from June of 2022. A lot of fans of Starcruiser say it was just early kinks they were still working out, if you went on later cruises they had fixed these problems etc - and to that I'd still say you shouldn't be paying those prices to play test for them, the first cruises should have been discounted then - but this seems to suggest they were running cruises for at least 2 full *months* without fixing the major problems like the faulty app. Insane that anyone still defends the Starcruiser as a whole instead of simply accepting they had a good time but the whole thing was a dice roll.

y
yazzle · May 9, 2025

I watched the starcruiser vid last week and decided to do a deep dive in the starcruiser subreddit and some of the things they said/say were/are SO crazy 😭 I would recommend everyone to do two things: one, search the title of Jenny's vid into reddit and look at the various threads in different subs - just keep an eye out for the same 10 or so names popping up in every thread - and two, look at posts in the Starcruiser sub from before the video dropped and sort by most comments. They were always overly defensive and qualified every point with a "BUT it was amazing" but people there were quite a bit more candid because they hadn't yet closed ranks to defend their beloved ride from the evils of *checks notes* criticism after it crashed and burned and closed within a year and a half. Users were more willing to admit things like how they had to cram into a room to bring the price down, or how their app broke too. Like, I saw someone whose cruise was near the end of the run when it was operating at lowered capacity lose their Captain's Table experience because they reduced the two dinner seatings to one and were apparently instead offered a "Captain's Table-like experience" and I was just there like... but you got your money back for the Captain's Table, right? Right?! Something I found so frustrating in the pre vs post-video manner of speech in that sub is the cost breakdown. They were a lot more willing to admit what the blanket cost of the experience was at first. Suddenly, post-video, it's all per night. Having a per night breakdown is fine in the sense of cost analysis and comparing it to equivalent hotel prices (ie how totally insane it is) but a ridiculous metric for telling people how much you paid because ultimately this is an experience with a preset length of stay. I'll use one of their favourite analogies here: you wouldn't say you pay "$300 per act" of a Broadway show because there is no option to pay by act. You pay $600 for two acts or you don't go at all. If I tell someone I only paid $1500 per night for the Star Wars cruise it implies you can opt to pay $1500 for a single night's stay. It also conveniently leaves out those pesky "per person" differences. I also found it great that the pole was the most memed part of the video because it truly is the be all end all of Starcruiser criticism. You can call everything that went wrong bad luck, or wrinkles in the design that were fixed later, you can blame the customers, you can blame the marketing, you can blame whomever you want but fundamentally it was BAKED INTO THE PERMANENT DESIGN of the room that as long as the hotel was running at full capacity, good 20 of your guests would get an obstructed view of the dinner show by totally random chance, avoided only by paying an extra fee.

S
Scrum Diddely Umptious · May 30, 2025

I am just so mad that people still support the star cruiser. How can they just compeletly ignore the exploitation of workers because they "had fun"? I can't imagine defending the experience after learning that the people working there were being taken advantage of to the degree that they were. I don't care if some former wage slaves claim they had a great time, it goes against fundamental human rights to force people to work long hours for little to no pay. It goes against all common sense and decency to run a luxury hotel that way, especially since they 100% have the funds to run it properly and pay fair wages. Mind boggling. Supporting any company that openly chooses to operate that way just makes them terminally thoughtless people. This video is not even really about the hotel or the people who enjoyed it, its a critique of corporate greed. That they somehow manage to take it personally is baffling- Nobody is coming after you for enjoying your honeymoon John and Linda, but those nice young people that served you space champagne and remembered your names were exploited by Disney, and thats bad.

B
Bethany · April 27, 2025

I actually gasped out loud when you mentioned your idea for a Porg animatronic in the climate simulator. That would have been sooooo adorable and people would have gone absolutely nuts over it. The story about the kids during the play testing is wild. Those kids didn't break the game--they played it! Breaking the game would have been if one of them had said, "That isn't Chewie, it's a guy in a costume! And we're not in space. We're in a building in Florida!" I continue to be frustrated by the criticism that you should have done more research on the story prior to visiting. No one should have to do hours of research before visiting a theme park, because the point of a theme park is to go and be entertained without having to do anything yourself! That's why they are also caused amusement parks--because they are there to amuse you! I saw some conversations online where someone would make that point, and then someone who was defending the Starcruiser would say something like 'what, are you saying you would never do research before you visit a place?' Yeah, sure I would, if I were visiting like, Istanbul, or Tokyo--someplace with centuries of history and a culture really different from my own. Even then I wouldn't spend hours and hours discovering every possible thing about those places. For example, when I went to Venice, I read some guides and decided which palaces and museums I wanted to visit. I didn't then spend umpteen hours reading dozens of PhD-level academic books about the art, architecture, and history of each place. I think it's ridiculous that the modern Disney experience now requires this of visitors. It's really unfair to consumers.

I thought the original review video about Star Cruiser was absolutely fantastic. It was refreshing to see someone like Jenny, who clearly is passionate about theme parks, and experiences etc., to give an honest review. I’m not someone especially interested in theme parks or themed hotels or experiences, but I love a deep dive into what goes wrong with these huge endeavors by companies or groups. Disney clearly has been getting away with a lot of shoddy quality for a long time and I think they truly thought they could get away with Star Cruiser. The idea of it was great, but it seems like they tried to cut corners and figured “we already have your money, so why bother.” After watching Jenny’s video, I watched a couple of other vlogs and videos about Star Cruiser and it’s quite clear which experiences were specifically for people who have platforms to review so they’d be positive. Jenny’s video was an example of what you or I would get…And again, a giant company like Disney would just say too bad if you had a bad time. Look at what happened when they found out how many followers she had when she voiced complaints about her droid going missing. Suddenly they could do something! I don’t understand why people would take an honest review of something that has nothing to do with them so seriously, but I applaud it! Keep them coming!!!

To solve the Sandro headpiece mystery, I heard someone on a podcast say the headpiece caused severe headaches for one of the actors so it was altered. I also heard on a podcast that there was the on stage actors, on site backups, AND offsite backup actors for each role. That’s an absolutely wild expense if true.

D
Dwayne Day · March 15, 2025

The backup actors is something I never thought about, but it makes sense--they could have people who work in the park during the day but are on call in case somebody gets sick or cannot come in. Theater productions have an under-study for big roles. But coordinating all of that must have been hard considering that these are all-day events into the evening, not a set time for a play.

Alexandra Kornides · February 20, 2025

Joining the chorus of Yinzers here to say that I (+ many of my Pittsburgh friends who are fans of your channel) would be delighted if you ever dropped the Kennywood video. So sorry you didn't get to experience of riding Garfield's Nightmare. P.S. If the bed bug experience didn't deter you from ever going back to Western PA, Idlewild in Ligonier is also a very interesting park. Nothing super special, but I think you might enjoy the very strange Storybook Forrest section with its fairytale themed dioramas.

The note about getting good playtesters is crazy to me, because the Orlando area has a very robust Game Design student body (including the top grad program in the country), many of whom attend THROUGH THE COLLEGE PROGRAM. They could have so easily gotten unpaid labor from nerdy students who would've loved to geek out about LARP and gameplay and provide in-depth feedback. What a waste :/

People saying you should have done a bunch of research to make sure you "play right" are so annoying. They're super common in gaming too. A properly made product shouldn't need a ton of outside work to be possible to enjoy

E
Erin Mellini · March 3, 2025

Exactly! I think of it like an adaptation of a book into a movie. You shouldn’t have had to have read the book to understand the movie or who the characters are. So, why would I need to do research for an immersive experience that supposedly was different depending on how you played. How could you research that ahead of time!!

If you haven't heard of it, Wizard Quest in the Wisconsin Dells is doing a lot of the improvements you've suggested for Star Wars hotel. Unfortunately they don't have real actors, but they give you quests and storylines through a tablet, and you have to interact and explore to find virtual items and earn fake currency. The themed environments are out of this world. I brought a bunch of friends there and even the skeptics were blown away by it - it's way more than we expected from a regional tourist town. Definitely recommend checking it out if you can make it to Wisconsin someday!

T

I'm just near the end one of the first "chapters", where Jenny has been describing the difficulty of both finishing the video, and then worrying about the reaction (as she apparently does for all of her videos). Before ever looking at the reaction, in the midst of a Florida Disney trip where none of her companions have watched the video. It's akin to watching a DVD commentary of a critically acclaimed movie given by the director, where the auteur gives us a raw look at the cost and implications and the very nature of their genius! Bravo!! I am so looking forward to the remaining ~1.5 hours.

It just occurred to me how insane it is that the entire "ultra luxury" hotel was staffed by new grads. My friend is in the hospitality industry, she does housekeeping/front desk management specifically, and it took her like 7-8 years to get enough seniority to be hired at a luxury hotel... Thats considered pretty fast too. Idk it was upside down from even just a basic hotel logistics standpoint. Whats the point of even doing it then?? I feel like a "run down" starwars space motel has way more fun potential because you could have more of the iconic fun scuzzy characters. Like... it makes more sense for resistance to hide in a slum and scoundrels to be doing hijinks in that setting, it makes more sense with the theming of the neighbouring park, you could be cheap with amenities... It makes no sense that they chose a luxury offering.

a
a.s. · November 20, 2025

the idea that everyone wants access to ''luxury-feeling'' experiences really annoys me & seems to be permeating every type of goods and services, i guess the idea is social media makes conspicuous luxury more visible & people want to emulate and broadcast a version of it? but the end result is like, mcdonalds and theme park hotels trying to look classy and minimalist. anyway that's all to say i think the space motel idea is so cool and we should all be mad that corporations think we all want to larp as space kardashians

Agree! its a very refreshing perspective, I work in education and i'm studying teaching (which has included some ed pysch study) and it astounds me when people just entirely forget that kids are also people and they can be complicated and aren't just a monolith, I got a good laugh at the idea that seemingly it was considered that kids would immediately try to break the game or side with the first order because i think almost every kid i work with enjoys some version of play fighting or horror franchise. Fascinated by your focus in youth liberation and advocacy! that sounds really cool, definitely appreciate your reflection on Jenny's videos i definitely will have to rewatch those with my teacher hat on, play at all ages is so fascinating!

A
Annemarie Andaleon · August 21, 2024

I feel like there are imagineers who have this many ideas and more but Disney refuses to green light them. The issue probably isn’t the imagineers, it’s mainly the corporation cheaping out.

N
Novra Kitty · August 16, 2024

The thing that really got through to me in your original video was your description of how exhausted it was making you. I have GAD and OCD, and while never having been to the US or Disney, or even being a star wars fan, that description you gave of staring at your reflection and hyping yourself to keep going... I would've suffered so badly at that hotel if I went, I would be broken and crying. That definitely got through to me and I'm kinda glad it did, a vacation shouldn't cause that sort of reaction, and it'll probably help with my own approach to future vacations

E
Emmaline Kim · August 15, 2024

I find it shocking that Disney Parks don't go through a third party company to test their new experiences. It seems like a worthwhile investment to get feedback that isn't influenced by the participants' relationship to Disney or the Imagineers.

K
Katrina Kaufman · August 15, 2024

It's wild to me that people would think it's the customer's fault when things go wrong on an expensive vacation experience like this. "Why didn't she ask to change tables?" as if the problem is that this person in particular is in a crummy seat with no view of the show, rather than the very real and obvious problem being that the seat exists at all. Imagine if you paid for an extremely expensive concert ticket and then they put you behind a pole. In what universe is that anyone's fault other than the venue's? And in fact this is something that literally any concert, theatre, or auditorium is supposed to take into account for any ticket sales!

E
Eileen Nguyen · August 16, 2024

This! If the problem with her table was she was seated next to a family with a bunch of little kids, or a group of very drunk adults, and she preferred not to be, then yeah, I can see the expectation that she ask to switch tables rather than stew and then complain. But if there's a show, and there are tables, everyone's table should provide a view of the show!

I’m a Disney Scrooge or so I’ve been told. I’ve never understood why anyone would pay more than it costs to actually see Europe, in order yo visit Epcot Center. It costs more to see Cinderellas castle than actual castles in Germany and France. I just don’t get it.I understand amusement parks. I don’t understand destination driven theme parks. Aren’t they all kind if the same once you take away the Uber theme? This is why I enjoy Jenny’s videos. I appreciate her love appreciation for theme parks even though I don’t share it because she points out with love the very reason why I would rather spend my money traveling abroad.

A while ago now, but I flew round trip from New Zealand to the UK and a sliver of my trip was spending 2 nights in a luxury castle hotel - a building & room that was built in the 12th century. We also paid to have locals take us on a tour of Hadrian's wall, and one of the locals was wearing historically accurate Roman costume. I'm pretty sure the cost of flights, train fair, accommodation, food, and the tour were comparable in price to the Starcruiser. (Edit: to be clear, just the luxury hotel portion of the trip, we did do more stuff.)

I think that one reason I was interested (and maybe a lot of other people as well), besides the fact that you have covered other theme parks and their shortcomings in hilarious detail is that as a Star Wars fan I was super excited about this (Galactic Star Cruiser) when it was first announced. Then, disappointed when I saw how much it cost and how short the stays were. Then, bemused when it was killed so quickly. I knew Disney wasn't going to admit why the real reasons it actually failed, and I also knew that all the shills out there who only talked about how great it all was when it opened would offer no insight into what happened. Watching your video was like a true crime documentary - it was the perspective of someone who WANTED things to be good, but is honest enough to admit when they aren't. You didn't go in with the intent to just shit on what they were doing, because you have a long history of being a theme park and Star Wars fan. I knew this was going to be the most truthful attempt to participate and then explain why it all went sideways. The fact that it was YOU meant it was going to be delivered with humor and wouldn't be mean-spirited.

I feel like the play test points here are a little off. I've done play tests at various cons for games and they give you anonymous surveys and make it very clear that you are helping them by telling them what worked and didn't work for you. In addition, my understanding is that even at big video game companies (e.g. Blizzard) play testing works by getting workers/friends/family to play the games and give feed back. Clearly there was something wrong with the play testing for Galaxy's Edge but I'm not convinced Jenny is getting at the problem.

As a long time table top RPG player and DM. And someone who has done some LARPing and escape room design. One of the things Disney failed at, in my mind, is the ratio of staff to players. In a traditional LARP where most players know the rules and are there to play a character, you can run an event with a hundred people with a smaller staff. The players will do most the work for you as most interaction will be player to player with only NPC popping in when needed to move the story. You can even draft veteran players to be pseudo NPC by giving them more info and motivation to drive other players. The thing is Galactic Star Cruiser was not a LARP, it was more an escape room or trying to mirror the table top feel of a game. In that setting you generally need one dedicated person to keep a group on point and that person can be managing no more then 6 people realistically. Sure some table top RPG groups are larger but the ideal ratio. Is one DM to four to six players. Beyond that and people are sitting around doing nothing to often. For this hotel experience to work that means basically one staff person for each one or two rooms. Which was never going to happen so Disney just thought a poorly designed app could handle the work.

benjamin fletcher · August 11, 2024

Great comment. Not to mentioned higher a person to play the Guide role just makes the since from a cost, efficiency, and customer experience perspective. I would also add that randomly being assigned to a storyline makes no sense. Even you go by there statement that your choices will help this system pick your storyline it makes no sense because the event was 3 days. It makes a lot more sense to simply choose your role/character before getting on the ship and play that from the start instead of waiting for the system to pick a role for you.

I really enjoy your videos. I normally take them in small amounts, and come back to them later, since they are a pretty full meal. I originally discovered your YouTube channel simply through the algorithm. I think it was the Church Play Cinematic Universe that was first recommended to me, which was delightfully weird. I watched it with my family and we all really got a kick out of your commentary and the weirdness of the topic. I then watched a bunch of your videos by myself. I enjoyed them thoroughly and was a little disappointed that there wasn't a lot of new content on YouTube. I discovered your Patreon, but I wasn't ready to add another subscription to my monthly budget, even though I could definitely afford it. When I saw you posted a four hour video about the Star Wars hotel, I was intrigued, but very daunted by the runtime. It was only after I saw the New York Times article and a few other mainstream press articles that I chose to watch that video. The sense the headlines gave me was that it was absolutely worth the runtime. I then watched the Star Wars hotel video and I have to admit it really held my attention. I watched in about three sittings and at the end of it, I decided I needed to subscribe to your Patreon. So, anyways, the mainstream press attention did, in fact, create at least one new subscriber. Thanks for making entertaining and offbeat, in a good way, videos.

The beginning of the video, when you discussed some of the mental/emotional aspects of posting, really hit home for me. I believe you've become as popular as you are as a direct result of being relatable to so many of us. You have more niche interests that not a ton of people are talking about, and even fewer that are doing so in ways that are as well researched, produced, and edited. I hate to think of all of us gobbling up your content, mostly for free, and it costing you more than just the time and effort put into it. I really appreciate the level of care you put into your content, and I can only imagine the amount of care that goes into the backend that I don't even know to appreciate. I hope that the compensation you receive, however it's received, is worth that level of care. (Not to mention your wit bc the jokes you write are def worth money) I also hope that as your popularity continues to rise (inevitably, imo) there is some semblance of work-life balance to be found.

I was at Gritti Palace (a luxury hotel in Venice) this week and I'd recommend you try a hotel like that or Royal Mansour, Claridges, or the Victoria-Jungfrau, not just a "top hotel" but a hotel known for its exemplary hospitality, because I think it would be an interesting point of comparison for theme parks. They are, in many ways, basically theme parks just for a different sentiment. (Don't bother with the Qatari-owned ones; they just stick gold on everything but the service is pretty bad.) I think you would find the parallels really compelling, particularly since the price isn't as different from DisneyWorld as you might expect.

about her point of not really having physical props for quest items- I entirely see the point. I work an escape room and you have no idea how often people break, steal, and generally mess up our props within just an hour. there's no way they'd do physical items. plus, there's no guarantee that you'd be able to get the items back if they were given during a quest line that didn't get finished.

I think one of the reasons why Kennywood is like that is cause Pittsburghers have such a strong fascination with/pride in their own history. I think all mid-size cities do this to some extent, but I've lived in a few others since leaving Pittsburgh and I don't think any of them are on the same level. One of the famous little local dialect quirks to describe locations by wearing things used to be. My mom will still say like "oh that store is down where Phar-Mor used to be" even though Phar-Mor closed in, like, 1997. I think the people who own Kennywood would absolutely love to shut down every historic ride and build as many coasters as possible except locals would riot.

It's wild seeing all the social media nonsense go down in real time. Like for the commenter that said that she was bad faithedly criticizing the experience by saying that "she was riding the elevators for fun". When, at the most, maybe she hadn't gone on the elevators before now. Or the tweet about how Jenny obviously got SO many things wrong about the hotel, like how the app worked or why they couldn't implement anything cool. This video made me look into Star Cruiser fan communities. With horror, I read a comment on the SC subreddit where a guy (while politely disagreeing with Jenny and talking about how he enjoyed his experience) said that he could only afford his trip because he randomly happened to receive a big inheritance payout that covered the cost. Imagine blowing your inheritance on the Star Ears hotel you couldn't otherwise afford. The financial irresponsibility in that. No wonder they have to cope so hard. wait oh my god,,, i'm so glad you went to Kennywood. I used to go there when I was a kid and spent summers in Pittsburgh and i rode my first ever rollercoaster there even though it looked rickety and old and my mom was super afraid (sorry I know you don't like rollercoasters but as a kid it was huge for me), also it's just so endearing how old it is and how it's still running when I went there I felt like I was becoming a part of amusement park history... also unrelated but I love the way you approach furries. I'm a furry myself and the way you talked about us in the bronycon video made me so happy. we usually end up being ridiculed and I'm so glad you went to a furry con!!! I hope you had a good time. i cant wait for the secret furry adjacent video, thank you for always being so kind and accepting!

I went to Parc Astérix yesterday before watching the Starcruiser video and the patreon video and I was shocked at how good of a day I had in Asterix for so little money compared to the Starcruiser experience. There are benches everywhere to relax, we were able to interact with characters and watched three spectacles just by wandering around, all the buildings and objects have inside jokes and puns on them, there are vegan options in restaurants, and the fastpass system is not necessary at all. The entire experience felt easy and fun (we didn't plan anything). For a park that started as "the cheap park with fun coasters" I feel they're going in the opposite direction than Disney and I'm so happy for it.

T
Thom Kitimat · August 11, 2024

I wanted to go to Parc Asterix so much as a child (we went to Paris every year, being part French, and never did). I am excited to learn it is still open, especially since Jenny has got me interested in theme parks and I just don't feel very excited by the UK's ones.

Captain Langosta AKA The Yellow Dart AKA Kyle · August 2, 2024

I always thought Disney's move away from animatronics was the combination of them not looking/moving "realistic" enough for whatever attraction they're attached to and maintenance costs, but Star Wars Land (TM) and the Star Wars Hotel (Also TM) seem to prove that depressingly wrong. Droids move like... y'know, robots? 'Cause they are? And they don't have skin/fur, so maintenance could be a lot simpler, since you don't need to denude them first. It's all just right there. The animatronic can just look like an animatronic. Heck, you don't even have to hide maintenance, since fixing droids is a thing in Star Wars that is both accepted and, at times, focused on. But no. No, why do something when you can just do nothing instead? Anyway, great ramble!

C
Captain Langosta AKA The Yellow Dart AKA Kyle · October 10, 2024

Addendum: I'm re-watching past ramble videos and I got to the one about Disney's best and worst decisions, and 27 minutes in, BAM! Jenny's talking about Splash Mountain (very on-brand) and I'm reminded that there is precedent for Disney doing EXACTLY what I was talking about above! They reused the animatronic goose skeleton from America Sings for Star Tours! Made it a droid! And it looks good! WTF! Anyway, just more sad proof that Disney's asleep at the wheel.

R
Richard R. · August 2, 2024

I was surprised at Ordinary Adventures take on your video. While I understand being upset over something you loved being criticized, but to not watch the assume what it’s about then lash out about it is a little silly. I was genuinely curious on their thoughts and messaged them about it, just to get the response of “I’m not watching it”. Then to later do a video mocking you saying oops we shouldn’t say the corporate name of the location otherwise we’re paid Disney actors. On the other hand, I get being upset that people who never been to the Star Wars hotel start crapping all over their videos based on watching your video.

C

Hi Jenny! I don't know if you'll see this, but if you do, I wanted to thank you not only for hiring an actual captioner (rather than using AI) but for working with the captioner to make sure the captions are as accurate as possible. I'm hard of hearing, and a video not having captions (or, sometimes more frustratingly, having bad captions) basically means I can't watch it, and a lot of YouTubers don't pay much attention to this. Thank you!

My personal favorite post-Starcruiser-vid discourse was a handful of comments along the lines of “Clearly this failed because it was made by WOKE FREAKS like WOMEN and GAY PEOPLE who don’t UNDERSTAND Star Wars” because I guess they watched the clip of you interacting with the cast member whose character was a Gaya stan and decided that a.) he must be gay and b.) his gayness was directly responsible for the failure of the Starcruiser, somehow

D
Dav · August 2, 2024

On the whole discussion about Ordinary Adventures (as I'm 99% that's who she's talking about). In Jenny's original star cruiser video, I did disagree about her point about naming things, as I personally do enjoy calling things by their name. I enjoy precise naming. But, I'm not totally surprised that some of the Star Cruiser super fans (like OA) found a lot of issue with the overall critique because they clearly loved it so much. OA released an almost 4 hr video about it all. They clearly loved it, and Jenny DID kinda mock Kitra's time in the climate zone with the rock trick. Bummer that there's some minor beef because I do enjoy both Jenny and OA

M
Markus D · August 3, 2024

I thought that Jenny maybe exaggerated just how weird it was to call them by those names, but I don't think she was wrong about the overall vibe of how the official Disney people talk, like mentioning not just the name of the attraction, but also the park it's in.

H
Hazel Davis · August 2, 2024

27:00 I was describing this to my husband with the star cruiser video. I said Disney has a 'yes, and' problem. Disney's corporate culture doesn't lend itself well to saying negative things or even just realistic things. When I worked there, the correct response was always "yes, and'. If the CEO said we're raising the price of the popcorn bucket, the only acceptable response was 'Yes! And we'll call it seasonal!' CEO wants to limit non LL wait times? "Yes, and we will use Genie+ to do it!" It's a peculiar combo of the yes man and the team player. Definitely makes the corporate culture a difficult one to work within for some. It also leads to mushy results like the Star Cruiser.

J
John Alonzo · August 2, 2024

I think it would've been interesting if you could buy a little porg, like the one I have for my shoulder, and it would interact with various porgs on the ship. It would probably really squeal at the sight of Chewie, for obvious reasons. Also, to have a giant Rancor going throughout the hotel, with that guy who was crying when the Rancor got killed, would be hilarious. Was that the Rancor's caretaker? I'm not sure.

I got eaten alive by bedbugs on my last trip :( the paranoia is awful. Specially since the bites didn't show up til like 10 days later so I got to spend some fun time being like "ARE THESE NEW BITES?!" for weeks. everything got frozen, hot washed and dried as per good procedure, and then later poisoned because of an anxiety spike. If it helps, bed bugs are not immortal: they can be killed and will be, if you get them before they get to too established. I recommend bedbug traps. It means there's something to actively check when the paranoia rises again. Great video!

I went through bed bugs about a decade ago now and I’m still traumatized. If anything tickles me in bed I will rip apart my entire bed and scour every single corner of my room. Hotels and movie theaters are still extremely stressful for me. My paranoia actually ended up saving my family from getting them last year bc I made them wait outside for me to check the room and then I found one crawling on a pillow! An update regarding the Thompsons from Iowa. The video led to online harassment from Disney apologists that they didn’t do more to defend the star cruiser. This, along with the debt incurred as part of their trip, widened the existing cracks in their relationship. They’re currently separated with the kids living with dad at his parents and the mom hitting the booze pretty hard as she tries to sell the house in a depressed real estate market. The general consensus amongst family and friends is they should have just gone to Six Flags.

I know how nerve wracking and draining it can be. I was also at AnthroCon this year and even hearing about bedbugs being at a hotel brought all the paranoia back. The rancor idea reminded me of an interactive experience I did a long, long time ago: the Alien Experience in Piccadilly Circus in London. Basically you and your group are on a tour of a facility studying xenomorphs. Your guide shows you a giant crate you're assured is full of facehugger eggs, then is called away for a reason they don't explain... at which point a marine shows up in a panic and says it's time to run. You only saw the aliens a couple of times: once when they grab someone from the group because you were too slow running to the elevator (I now know that was an actor), and one towards the end before your escape. Mostly their presence was implied by stagecraft, special effects, and actor performances. They could easily have done a rancor rampage in the same style, even rigged the hallways with removable panels so they looked damaged for the rest of the cruise. Coulda been cool. Anyway I don't need much beyond "It may exist soon" to get hyped over a Jenny video, so bring on the short furry-adjacent video, and I hope you got enough good b-roll to make up for the bedbugs, that sounded terrible.

'I think it's good when people think critically about things, especially things they enjoy." That's a really interesting claim! It's controversial. I'm ambivalent. What do you all think. Is it good? Why or why not?

R
Remi P · August 1, 2024

I don’t find it to be controversial at all! I think creative people often see things they enjoy as an opportunity to imagine other ways the world/characters could be expanded or refined. You see it a lot in fandom, where people have latched onto a character and written paragraphs extrapolating on plot holes, ways to patch them, their personal interpretation of the character, criticism of characterization, etc. I think it’s equal parts appreciation for the world that was built for you to engage with, and enthusiasm for all the things that could have been built on that foundation. (Maybe with some disappointment for the things that weren’t, admittedly!)

OK, here's my further idea to save the hotel. You need a train station/spaceport type area for people to wait for their shuttle up to the hotel. You are assigned a window of time for the shuttle, but you can arrive early if you want. The spaceport would feel a little like Grand Central Station, but even bougie-er. There will be gates with signs in alien language along some walls, and from time to time character actors walk through the station only to go through one of those doors. There can be a cast member at those gates who politely tell you that your ticket is for the shuttle, over there. There are occasion announcements over the loudspeaker which repeat in alien languages. Maybe from time you hear "paging..." and then it's the name of one of the NPCs you meet later. Each guest can be given an alien credit card to buy snacks from the strange alien versions of Cinnabon or Orange Julius. It's air conditioned. There can be a TV showing Disney TV shows that have been dubbed over into an alien language (there are English subtitles that have been retranslated from the alien so they're slightly off, like that famous "do not want" Star Wars translation. The souvenir stands are real, but themed.

I don't have any arms on my chair, but I'm a Carl Jung enthusiast and have read Victor Frankl's brilliant, "Man's Search For Meaning". From a Jungian perspective I feel people have lost meaning in their lives. Where spirituality/religion (such a loaded word these days) provided people with a sense of community, myth and purpose; people find it instead in corporate product. It is why people are zeolites for things like "Star Wars" and "Harry Potter". They find something close to religion in their love of these products. They feel it is an attack on something that provides some sort of meaning to their lives, and that undermines the foundation of their sense of purpose.

WRT the twi'leks, Ryloth was colonized during the Empire, but there were invasions during the Clone Wars by the Separatists. If I'm remembering correctly there was a lot of anti-nonhuman sentiment in the time of the Empire, and it was on the rise at the end of the Galactic Republic. Twi'leks specifically were often seen as "sexy" or "exotic" aliens (which is a whole other can of worms), but still very noticeably not human, so they were treated as second class citizens within the Empire/Republic. Not sure how/if this carried over to the First Order, but all the same pairing Gaya with someone who was raised to see her and her people as lesser beings is very yikes.

l
lrw789 · August 1, 2024

I feel like Jenny's exposition actually biases the viewer in favor of Disney, despite her careful and unbiased journalism. Any reasonable audience would conclude there must have been fundamental flaws as early as the design phases, versus later implementation, to account for Disney's failure. For example, if game play alone had failed, then a coding failure could have been suggested, despite its inability to account for other failures like sight lines at dinner or indifference to fulfillment of shipping orders for expensive, custom droids. Yet Jenny refuses to impeach the integrity or capability of Imagineers without direct evidence, despite the declining creative output of the company. I genuinely feel it is in Disney's interest for its audience to believe that while corporate success has perhaps corrupted its decisions, that the talent remains, even while the company continues exporting the majority of its creative work like animation in favor of decentralized, cheaper, and faster completion of its projects.

I'm excited for the Barbie tier list video, whenever/if ever you feel up to tackling it. It's always really refreshing to see how you take kid stuff seriously as something made by adults for a whole demographic. Especially stuff for little girls, which never gets the same nostalgic reclaiming that happens to all gender/boy media. Princess and the Pauper still slaps.

I love the idea of a 6-12" tall engineer popping up all over the place. What could even further improve this by having 'tube ways' and elevators that the character is taking all over the ship to lead guests to moments on the ship. The tubeways would just need to look like a passage for a small transit car that we see light pass along it to indicate the travel of the car. They could also have video screens in spots that briefly light up, showing that character working in a space before coming to the 'window' and closing a hatch over the 'window'. The ship should have also had one or two 'observation decks' where you you up into a 360 video dome that is supposedly on the top of the ship. They would mostly just need a cycling video of a star field passing overhead with the view of the top of the ship.

Super sorry to hear about the bedbugs, those are such a huge fear of mine. M
Markus D · July 31, 2024

I'm guessing you're talking about the Trojans, but from what I've read, it doesn't seem to originate with that story, but was just a saying among common people since ancient times. Older versions are mostly written along the lines of "don't check the teeth of a horse you were given", specifically referencing how you determine a horse's age by looking at their teeth. The saying basically means to not be overly discerning about something that you're getting for free, which isn't exactly the situation surrounding the Trojan Horse event. I don't think I've even hear a version of the Trojan Horse story where there was specifically a mouth on the horse.

S
Samantha · July 31, 2024

Jenny, I am so sorry about your bedbug situation. Though it's likely too late to reverse heat damage on your clothes and plush, if you want to treat your potentially infested items again, you could use cold instead of heat. Check out Dr. Olson's published research paper "Cold tolerance of bed bugs and practical recommendations for control." They concluded exposure to -13 C can result in 100% lethality in all life stages of bedbugs, and they provided recommendations for cold treatment times. I don't know if you'd want to splurge on a ~$200 chest freezer to reach those temperatures, but it could be an option.

It’s baffling that people think companies purposefully lose money for tax purposes. The only way this would work is if they are being taxed at over 100%. If they purposefully lose 100 million they may optimistically get 30 million in reduced taxes (by reducing taxable income by 100 million). The only way the tax write off math works out is if they’ve already spent the 100 million and then they realize the expected profit from the project is less then the 30-40 million they’d get from the tax write offs. They’d never set out planning to make a failed project.

I think the playtest stuff really cements my feeling that one of the big problems here was that they didn't have actual game devs involved. Like there are so many obvious pitfalls they tripped into that anyone with experience making interactive media would anticipate, and it really seems like whoever was in charge of putting the design team together didn't really consider whether a project like this might require a different style of development than other Disney attractions. Obviously it takes a lot of skills to be an Imagineer but making games carries a lot of very specific challenges that they pretty clearly weren't prepared for.

S
Solipsody · August 1, 2024

It's over two decades since I worked in game development professionally, although I did a little related academic work afterwards. I'd definitely say the most fascinating aspect of this whole thing to me has been trying to figure out what the designers actually intended the "gameplay" to be, because if they sent one Imagineer to do a workshop with... Whoever the equivalent of Ernest Adams is now (I'm old), it wouldn't have looked anything like what I've seen. There were some conceptual problems that no amount of money would have fixed.

He mentioned being terrified of the Moby dick ride which I think is 1 of the 2 dark rides? Gotta say, Disney is so short-sighted it's baffling. Over 9 million people *who are interested in Disney* see a 4+ hour long video about this disaster. How much revenue could a pool of 9 million people represent? Even if only 1 in 100 of them might go to a park, one day pass to a park, $100 per person and a lunch and gift purchases there's $15 million lost. If Disney had refunded Jenny I'd trust them to at least make amends, but now I don't know if it'll be a good experience and I *do * know I won't get a refund, so I'm not giving them a single dollar.

S
Sasha W · August 1, 2024

Yep! I initially planned for a Disney vacation for my post-grad school graduation trip, (which I was very excited for!) but after learning about all the new hoops to jump through and the negative press regarding their new attractions and lands, I’m opting instead to do Universal Studios since it’s more affordable and I’m excited for their new land. Disney’s competition has been blowing it out of the water and though Disney might have a loyal base, they’re losing a lot of their casual fans

Z
Zachary C · July 31, 2024

Something I’ve been confused about that I think you sort of touched on in the OG but not entirely is how independent was the experience? Like, what if a parent had a son and a daughter, and the son wanted to be smuggler and the daughter wanted to do resistance? Were story paths purely per booking, or was it each individual? All I remember about this is Jenny’s sister separately conversing with the first order guy and then the conversation deleting itself.

You do realize that you don't have to destroy your clothes, plushes, etc. to kill the bed bugs, right?

J
Jenny Nicholson · July 31, 2024

A lot of our stuff was run through the industrial dryer by the hotel before we left to try to kill the bugs, and I'm probably gonna have to do it to all of it again if I want to keep any of it (from what I've read they didn't actually do it long enough to kill anything). They brought back a bunch of our clothes mixed up in a big garbage bag and while we were sorting through it and rebagging we could already see some of our stuff was totally ruined. A lot of women's clothes aren't supposed to be washed or dried on hot (specifically many skirts and dresses shrivel up to be shorter, so the hem might be too high to wear at all or the waist not be where your waist is anymore and won't fit properly), a pair of sneakers I'd only worn once ripped open and had stuffing coming out of the tongue, I know bailey had an expensive top with beaded straps that was destroyed. Most polyester plush can be laundered but plush fur, softer fabric, etc will melt on the highest dryer setting. (Squishmallows infamously do this so you can google image 'squishmallow ruined in dryer' if you want to see what it looks like) I didn't go through any of the plush I got there because they came back in their own garbage bag and I was depressed about it, so I just tied it off and packed it like that, but I'm assuming at least a couple in particular didn't fare well based on how the clothes did. Also everything I'm reading tells me to throw away my suitcase

R
Reed · July 31, 2024

To highlight one concept that Jenny mentions several times during the narrative - critical thought. What literally defines a critic is that it is someone who applies critical thought to (topic of choice). Most people, regardless of what area of interest you're talking about, never give it any further thought than "I like it" or "I don't like it". People get their backs up about their opinion being just as valid as a critic's opinion, but that's a false equivalency. Liking or not liking something is absolutely your right, and whether anyone else feels the same way neither validates nor invalidates your opinion. The point is, how much actual critical analysis have you given to that opinion? Even if you are inclined to think critically about the things you love, are you able to then describe those thoughts to other people in a way that they not only understand, but are entertained by the telling? Four hours of coherently narrated critical thought is freaking impressive by any measure. Add the costume changes and the actual quality of the storytelling, and the video is, frankly, amazing.

When the starcruiser video first came out, I saw a comment on reddit from a woman who took her 3 kids, one of who's autistic. At one point in the game, two of her kids got a storyline where they had to go in one of the rooms with the door closed and they wouldn't let anyone who wasn't invited in. The child who's autistic got left out and despite the mom's protests, the cast members just would not let him in and the child had a meltdown because he wanted to be with his brothers and he didn't understand why he couldn't go.

T

One of my mom's students was autistic and had theme park rides as a special interest and every time Disney takes out park benches or does things like make the Starcruiser itinerary ultra-condensed and hectic I think of this kid and his family. The NPR one is hilarious; he says he shut the video off when he saw its runtime and so instead of reviewing the video he talks about longer-length videos in general, while also referencing the video and iirc Jenny's name* in the title of his article. Unless the audio clip is different from the article text body and he talks about it there? Great Rolling Stone interview, I like that the interviewer let Jenny speak her piece and asked relevant follow-up questions. *double-checked; not her name. But still lol

Kennywood and anthrocon! Pittsburgh mentioned!! (But also it’s totally fine to not have gone on the coasters at Kennywood. Not sure if you already know about this but the woman who was featured in the fan film (DRAPE: A Star Wars Story | FIRST EVER Fan Film From The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser) clip that was in the Starcruiser video didn't consent to be in that fan film. She commented on the fan film stating that the guy who filmed it followed her, filmed her, and posted her on YouTube without her consent.

I completely agree about it being better that you were in the shitty seat. Like it sucks but as you said how many people save up $$$ for this trip to Disney and are never going again? when you're that invested, any problem becomes the thing that Ruined your trip. I think the reaction of being like "Well she's a youtuber she should have just made them move her" is such influencer-brain nonsense. like they expect you to act like you're the center of the world for this video you're doing, without any regard for the people around you, like oh I'm """famous""" so I deserve the good seat (or free stuff or whatever). anyway at least 5% of your views are just me rewatching it sorry I'm obsessed.

Just to reiterate what others have said, I am not here to listen to things that interest *me*, because I'm good at satisfying my own fixations as I am. I'm here to listen to you being sincerely passionate about things that interest *you*. I learn a lot about things I'd never have thought or cared about before, and you make a compelling case why I should care, and I think in general caring about things a healthy amount builds character, as a bulwark against all-consuming cynicism. So thank you for everything Jenny, and best of luck with the bed bugs, they can be a real horror show.

It really sounds like they didn't test it properly. Tbh, I think they should have approached it like video game testing (that is, proper video game testing, not what we see all too often these days with games like Fallout 76 or Redfall). Along with having a variety of people test the game, proper video game testing includes having testers basically try to break the game. They do all kinds of things that are not intended in the design and so that, in the finished product, the game isn't relying on players only doing what was expected. The way you described the Starcruiser experience sounds like they missed that particular testing element - attempting to "break" the game. In fact, the game was extremely rigid and fragile so that, even if you were trying your best to play as intended, it still broke.

K
Kavi Montanaro · July 31, 2024

D
Diego · July 31, 2024

In the beginning you asked the question, "why would anyone watch such a niche topic". My answer to that: Because you are a such a fantastic storyteller! I really don't have any initial intersts in the topics you cover. But I watch them, because you make them so interesting. Bringing people to watch 4 hours on a topic they don't care about that much, speaks so highly to your craft narrating and presenting themes. I really admire that skill so much (also it made be appropriate that whole culture and it's passionate fans much more)!

F

I totally agree with this. Jenny is a fantastic communicator who has a passion for her subjects. Things that aren't at all in my interests, I can drop it all for someone who can explain it well. "Do you want to spend 9 hours cumulative on a defunct Utah theme park?" "Are you crazy? Hell no!" "What if the host is Drew Gooden / Dan Olsen / HBomberGuy / MuneCat / VSauce / LadyEmily?" "You SOB! M
Mike S · July 31, 2024

Loved the original video and loved this. My 2 cents on the response from Disney/Star Wars die-hards that "this was an act of god/one-off bad experience" is that their response shows just how far Disney has lost their way from what made them beloved in the first place. Walt had *many* flaws but one of his greatest insights and accomplishments was to recognize how important it was to ensure not a single guest at his theme parks had a bad experience. The value to Disney's reputation of being the place where everyone always has a good time was far more valuable long-term than any penny pinching could save short-term. Bottom line: the fact there was no fail-safe customer experience representative at the very least shows how little current Disney actually cares about their guests.

K
Kavi Montanaro · July 31, 2024

I think it's an intangible thing, but there must be generosity at its core. Any competent street performer can satisfy an entire crowd. They do it with generosity. This skimpy penny-pinching thing is off-brand, and I don't think they realize it.

Reminds me of when I filled out a staff sentiment survey and the likert scale for satisfaction in the workplace was on a scale of “happy to ecstatic”. If anyone gets the experience you got for thousands of dollars, even if it was a minority of people, it means the game is broken, or at the very least not functioning as intended. It’s so weird how they set this up. I can’t imagine spending so much time and money building an experience just to not do full run-throughs that might have elucidated some of these problems ahead of time.

A
Ann Parker · July 31, 2024

I have to wonder how much of it was motivated reasoning from the executives. Like, it will cost time and money to figure out how to not make it possible for the story to go off the rails. It will cost time and money to think of the logistics of having a lot of First Order guests and characters to rat to (or how Lt Croy can respond to that without refusing to yes-and interactions). So we will just decide, people won’t want to try those things. And not many people will want to RP bad guys. Our guests are little porcelain dolls who will go where guided at all times.

L
Lights Low · July 31, 2024

The idea that character performers at Disney feel weird about cameras being shoved in their face.... is soooo weird... especially when it's an experience built for tourist interactions, everyone's got a camera...

E
Ello Asty · July 31, 2024

In countless v-logging clips I've never gotten the sensation that characters are avoiding or minimizing interaction with people with cameras. I always assumed that it encouraged actors to be more on for better or for worse. The Good Reason - "Ah, they want to document and appreciate me! Let's really have fun with the performance!" The Bad Reason - "Oh man, I'm so tired and really just want to end my shift. But this clip might end up on Youtube where my boss will see so I gotta turn it up if I don't want to get in trouble...."

It was a "failure to understand human nature." As a kid, my favorite movie was Watership Down. Not thinking kids want dark, complex, villain plays really is silly. Maybe not all kids, but my nephews are a bunch of little weirdos who love FNAF and other weird stuff

K
Katherine Evans · July 31, 2024

I def noticed the influencer thanked in the video who pushed back on social media against the critique. Though I, perhaps graciously, saw it as them saying "not everyone had a terrible experience. Here is a video that shows how, when executed well, a trip on the star cruiser could be great"

T
Ted Koutz · July 31, 2024

I watched some of their video, I think, and IIRC they paid for upgrades like "room that's big enough to have guests over" because part of their vlog is like 3-4 adults in one of the hotel rooms and there's a table to set drinks on and they're not stepping over each other. I think this adds thousands to your stay

T
Ted Koutz · July 31, 2024

That's pretty spot on about why kids would be into the First Order, as a kid a lot of villains just had a cooler aesthetic or color palate than the good guys and that made the toys more fun to play with. Star Wars is a great example because the good guys looks are like "vest" or "robes" and the bad guys get a cool helmet and jetpack

I love your take on how the imagineers probably imagined children. I can say that I still remember some aspects of my childhood, like how I reacted to media, and I was a really shy kid, but my favourite Disney character was Scar because I thought he was cool. I also remember really disliking Timon and Pumbaa because their goofy comedy style didn't work for me, and I laughed a lot more at Scar's dry sarcasm. And this wasn't during like, an edgy tween phase, but when I was younger than ten.
