S2E22: Atomic Blonde
This week, a one-off episode to bridge the gap before our Austin Powers live shows: Atomic Blonde! Charlize Theron stars in a nest of spies type situation in cold war Berlin... a movie with immense potential that sadly completely fucks itself with that most insidious of poisons: Masculinity.

Way too late for this but you guys are thinking the wrong genre if you want to find the sacred male wounded stuff. You need to look at war movies. You’ll have these scenes ogling over men getting hurt as some sacred part of protecting “da nation” in a bunch of those. Lone survivor is the one I think of with the most of it
I'm so glad the pod was also confused, I watched this when it came out and I was actively getting a degree in film at the time and could not follow the damn plot.
Really, the Macchiavelli reference is exactly what you'd see in John Wick. One of the bad guys in Wick introduces himself reading Dante and then turns the book to the camera to show off the big "Dante" on the cover and says "Dante!"
This film disappointed me and im looking forward to finding out if it disappointed you too. I've just been on a John Wick bender and from what I remember this film is about 99% less good than any of those.
Ha ha, I wrote thus before listening to the first five minutes and didn't know you were going to say John Wick a thousand times. I'm still begging you to watch The Spy Who Dumped Me for fun.
There is nothing I want more in life than to play a game of Hunter: the Vigil with Alice as the ST
Huh, I wondered why I thought this movie was kinda shallow when I saw it. Fun aesthetic, I can't remember a single thing that happens.
.
You literally cannot waste Til Schweiger on anything. It is not like he has any Charisma.
Nonbinary Alice requires answering the question of whether they wear a hijab or not, and I genuinely am interested what the answer would be and why
I tried watching this movie about a half dozen times on flights, but it just never manages to keep my attention. But hey, got an entertaining podcast out of it!
A shame about Eddie Martsen, he's a good actor when a role requires someone to play a whiny loser. I may not have got the Tinker Tailor episode I hoped for with this episode, but I got a lot of references to Tinker Tailor during the episode in compensation. In all seriousness, a good one.
It is still surprising to me that this was a licensed and made into what it became. The GN is basically nothing like the film. It's much more a slow burn espionage thriller, not an action romp. Basically Berlin, Double Agents, a List, protag is a woman spy, that's where the similarities end. Though I'm likely very biased because I worked at the pub the time the book originally came out.
solidarity for owning fantastic greatcoats which don't quite work on you
Don't worry Devon I heard and appreciated your Bloodborne joke!
I think I saw it but it completely left my memory. the watch/list scene sounds familiar
"a game of hunter the vigil set in 1980s Berlin" had me cooing like I'd just seen an adorable baby bunny rabbit
My strongest memory of this movie is that my 91 year old grandfather saw it alone in the theatre and loved it, comparing it favorably to the French Connection.
Your grandad sounds awesome!
Y'all literally read my mind or heard my prayers because I was thinking at the wrap of UNCLE that this would be an excellent bridging episode 😍
Graphic novels are a blessing and a curse for filmmakers, it seems.
oh ya I forgot about this movie, its pretty damn good. Apparently Keanu loaned his stunt team out for this movie he liked it so much
haven't listened yet, but my opinion of this movie is that it so uncritically copies the plot beats of a bond film/action thriller with a male lead that it accidentally does bury your gays
should specify that it's still bad in those movies when the female love interest dies horribly but this one shocked me to my core when it came out because I assumed this movie would dodge that kind of thing
I'm sorry I cannot brook any argument against the movie that made me realize I'm trans.
