I finally sat down and watched Saloum this afternoon, and holy shit it's so good
Absolute top tier guest, and a top tier episode. A real delight to listen to gang 馃枻
Revenge is bad, but justice is good. Was killing that child soldier-using guy justice or revenge? This exercise is left to the reader.
Just to note, Shudder existed prior to their acquisition by amazon, and it has always had a wide and loose definition of horror. It carries thriller, sci-fi and general indie weirdness that can't find a home elsewhere. It produces and supports all sorts of small film-making and Saloum was much celebrated by them.
loved this episode so much i went and watched the movie. i think the final scene actually made sense, and wasn't so much a breaking of the curse as it was the curse actively releasing the two people it wasn't interested in. one of the themes of the movie seems to be debts and payments. chaka's escape incurred a debt, and that debt was paid when he drowned, and perhaps with the debt now settled, the curse allowed rafa and awa to go free.

The Remington was a reproduction, probably by Uberti. And I can definitively say that the recoil was just acting, because the hammer is not always in the correct position for the effects we see
It could also be a licensed Airsoft Model. When Chaka draws it the first time you can see a small black plastic tag in front of the trigger. This is a trigger lock on the airsoft model, but I'm not sure if the firearm itself also comes with this feature.
Only episode I stopped listening to partway to watch the movie before I spoiled myself, and boy am I glad I did, best movie I've seen in years! Been singing it's praises to all who can hear!
I do also want to mention that Chaka's fit through the film, the red gloves and red neckerchief, as well as the use of a old revolver, is very similar to revolver ocelot in MGSV. Gamer director
Stopped listening quarter water through and actually watched the film (first for this podcast). Amazing treat, thank you kjb
its great to see you cover some african cinema, there's so much great stuff out there from so many countries, and all of it languishes in obscurity in the global north, except for maybe touki bouki and a few others that have achieved a degree of recognition
In defense of Shudder it's very cheap to subscribe to and is the most lovingly curated streaming service out there in my opinion. If I could only subscribe to one service it would be Shudder by a mile.
The movie is fantastic, the episode great but Ndey Tida's Kitchen is absolutely awesome. I'll be making some thieboudienne soon if not today, thanks.
Of course you must remember that *begins Roger Moore voice* "the Chinese have a saying when you embark on a journey of revenge first you must dig two graves"
