Episode 27.5: The Foreigner

A nung chinese veteran loses everything in a resurgent IRA bombing, so goes absolutely ape shit tracking down the CEO of the IRA - Gerry Adams!

The Honourable Devon's judgement was such a well-worded compromise that if they were so inclined they could become a dangerous politician.

I'm not going to lie, I've listened through the entire series and there have only been a handful of movies that I've wanted to go watch/rewatch and this is one for some reason. 🤷‍♀️

I was going to write a long rant about how Alice is wrong, and Jackie gets wrecked in tons of fights. I was going to link The Young Master final fight and everything. But I relistened and she makes a valid point. Even when Jackie is getting his shit rocked he is simply too athletic, and his movements too animated to convey a believable sense of injury or exhaustion. Anyway Devon is right too, cheers.

No, Alice was right.

I watched this before listening to the podcast and one element of the movie im surprised they didnt bring up on either side is chance. They only stop the bombing by chance as the flight was delayed, and pierce brosnan being flipped by the british (which would of course be hideous for ireland) is only undone by chance also because jackie chan goes to the right conclusion, that he was involved with the attacks, because he takes the false lead that the go between guy planted as real. I could see different readings of it, both nihilist and anti-violence, but i do think it contributes to the text substantially

I watched this before the podcast, wish it was longer as there some ideology in this film that needs dissecting, but the only note I'd make is the first "torture scene" didn't come across that way to me. He knows he's the mole and tells him SO15 are coming, you've fucked up and disobeyed me, you are dead either way so tell me not them, which he does not because of the kneecapping but because he's fucked bronsen over by using his mistress in this cell, linking him to their actions and destroying his political goals via this thread, which he did as a fuck you because he though Brosnen was too soft. It's more of an execution scene than torture as he didn't have to use violence to extract the information, he just wanted to hurt him cus he was pissed off. Maybe a technically but contrasting it to the later scene they feel very different in portrayal.

OK SO I am only 15 minutes in BUT, the issue is far more complex with the whole "The young ones are all riled up", it can be fairly accurate in a paramilitary setting, especially if the young men (it's mostly young men) are raised by heavily para-supporting families (I cannot fully talk about the UDF and the likes as I have less knowledge on them but I imagine similar scenarios are common), the whole "If you lived through the peaceful era" doesn't exactly apply because the peace is so...tense. There is still a lot of power in these groups and there are young people who fall for the lies, the bullshit and end up joining and committing crimes against their better judgement. Young lads out there to prove themselves, ya know? I know whatever I say now doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, the episode is out but I do cringe whenever my country is brought up because we are still a mess and still dealing with stupid paramilitary bullshit on both ends, it's still a major problem. Not that you weren't implying otherwise, but I just- love/hate my country and often see it represented in a way that is a bit upsetting. Overall, the IRA are always the ones used in these cases, giving the UDF and the likes a seeming pass (i am rambling-), idk man lmao

Excellent discussion and I do agree with both sides. That being said, I am looking forward to the Court's discussion of Puma Man's Donald Pleasance as elder abuse or willful camp.

Bromley *is* the worst London suburb. I'd also like to speculate that the Wagatha Christie method of investigation also came from this movie because No Time to Die is not the only one to use that.

we're a bit past the era for them, but i think the first Incredibles movie might be fun to do a bonus episode on. it's got the 60's-spy aesthetic and motifs, the music slaps, and it even has robots blofeld!

Biggest problem with the movie is that “time bomb with two minutes to go” is literally the least likely scenario in which torture will help you

I would have respected the choice to have all Liam Hennessy's lines dubbed over, like when Gerry Adams would appear on BBC News

I appreciate that this movie's take on the Met is "Probably wouldn't take a bribe, would torture and murder a woman." If at some point you'd like to return to Ireland for an episode I'd love to hear your takes on "Michael Collins", a light hearted romp about a time British intelligence forces got what was coming. Featuring Bond alum Charles Dance and Julia Roberts doing the second worst Irish accent in history - giving Devon full licence to really go whole hog.
