So glad i watched this one before listening to the episode, had a lot of thoughts. First off, realizing that were really just pulling a boat up a mountain for this movie was genuinely mindblowing, i love the movies. Secondly, im sad we didnt get more of the guy at the old railway, i figured they'd bring him on board, given that he is maybe the most loyal worker an aspiring entrpreneur could ask for, certifiable goodknight contender imo. And lastly, my most important takeaway, the scenes with the kids and the pig are the most important part of the movie to me, fitz's goal was to bring opera to the town, and he has acheived that goal, but is incapable of seeing that because he is too racist and classist to understand that these poor people of color's opinions of art are just as important and valid as the fatcats who he tries to fit in with. He believes that he needs to do so in the "proper" way, by building a full on opera house and having european actors come from across the ocean, when he could easily have started a youth opera program, and created something new. Those kids obviously cared enough to give him some time, they spent two days protesting his arrest. I dont believe this is the intended reading, i believe it is supposed to be the "divine providence over fools" trope y'all discussed, but it provided me with a very interesting veiwpoint into this movie. If you didnt watch this one before listening, highly recommend, the scenes of the boat being pulled up the mountan are crazy, and go on for much longer than it seems like based on the discussion here (in a good and affecting way).
I was having some pretty severe anxiety and then y'all started doing the Nazi bits and it lifted me right out of it. So if you're ever out of benzos, just go to 47:47.
No, that's a Martini! You're thinking of the 19th-century breech-loading rifle used by the british! (This joke is for November and potentially only her, but I'm ok with this)
No, you're thinking of the drink James Bond famously orders!
Humbly suggesting KJB Sleepover Episode with Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
59:50 Easy problem to solve "check out this interesting object. Over time it will rot into water. This water is safe to drink but the object I am handing to you will cease to exist in a matter of hours. If you touch it, it will rot faster."
Not spooky but The Straight Story is one of the best lawnmower/truck movies of all time
Clocking in to remind our esteemed leaders that a starship is like a truck, as established by Alien, and therefore Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a truck movie but also a religion movie. And Star Trek IV: Voyage Home is a heist movie. They're heisting those whales.
Devon do the insane Billy Zane movie The Phantom, it’s got Catherine Zeta-Jones doing a Xenia Onatopp
I am once again suggesting every dads favorite movie, smokie and the bandit. I learned from girl tourismo that the main song was written by a Trans woman
"[Kinski] is best known for starring in five films directed by Werner Herzog from 1972 to 1987 [...], who would later chronicle their tumultuous relationship in the documentary *My Best Fiend*." That's quite a relationship they had.
What is a train if not a truck that you can't steer? You could do Train to Busan
I knew there was something kind-of-spooky-but-not-scary that I was thinking of but it just came to me. This is a movie with positive retro brit vibes, its about being gay in midcentury rural England. Penda's Fen (1974) is about a teenage boy coming to terms with his sexuality and faith, which takes the form of a demon (or angel?) which is only very tense rather than actually scary. It's sweet, and small, and prosaic story that's mostly about having deep, layered conversations with your dad and neighbours about faith but also learning to hate England and (straight) English culture. It is technically what you call Folk Horror, it's like a sort of backwards Wicker Man. I think you'd love it and probably not a lot of people have seen it these days.
Suggestion: Source Code (2011) (Is a train a kind of truck…?)
I mean Nightmare B4 Xmas is a Halloween Heist Movie If you feel artsier: the movie Macario (a retelling of death's godson) is a stunning work of the Mexican golden age of cinema
The only thing missing from this film was a deranged penguin.
We established in Alien that spaceships can be trucks, so I propose another spooky spaceship movie: fuckin Event Horizon (rip Sam Neill)
not quite "spooky" in a autumn kind of way, but Predator? the first one to go with Alien. it has Arnie being Arnie, guys being dudes, doomed Yaoi, and the one the only Podcaster Jungle Hunter Predator going woopwoopwoopwoopwooo
With the prompt of vaguely spooky in honor of Halloween coming up, I highly recommend the movie. Good Boy which is a horror film entirely from the perspective of a dog. Seems to have been made entirely safely for the dog over a period of 3 ish years and involved a lot of the director and his wife quacking at the dog to get his attention. Or, a movie that might say something about masculinity or femininity or something and it's Spooky, It Follows
Klaus Kinski wasn't as evil as the intro made him out to be. He was way worse.
I gotta suggest Ravenous (1999) it has alot to say about America, capitalism...the urge to taste other men. Really weird music too
heyyyyy Devon, got a slighty spooky one for you with unreal cosmetic work! A real communist spectre flick: Viy (1967) https://boxd.it/nd2
This is the movie that started my Werner Herzog obsession that lasted for almost a decade. Fun fact, originally Mick Jagger was supposed to be in this movie as a dimwitted assistant to Fitzcarraldo. However due to the original actor for Fitzcarraldo, Jason Robards, getting sick (re: Nearly dying) and having to drop out of the production slowed down filming to the point that scheduling conflicts forced Mick to drop out. Werner ended up removing the character rather than attempt to replace Mick Jagger. EDIT: ok, they covered the Mick Jagger thing. Better than I did. Fantastic episode.
DEVON. LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM. PLEASE
I recently watched it with my wife. This was our first seance. Absolute blast. It should be UNESCO worldwide heritage.
I'm just picturing a German d day gunnery officer seeing a Scottish bagpiper on the beach and holding his hand out to the crew and in a very thick accent saying, "Nein, Let him Cook."
Oh my god IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING. I have been thinking for a minute that a mini KJB series of the five Herzog/Kinski collaborations plus My Best Fiend would have one or two things to say about masculinity. But at a bare minimum Aguirre: the Wrath of God is a must. A masterpiece filmed on a stolen camera by a man who learned how to make films by reading encyclopedia entries.
Drinking a Fanta at the Phantom of the Pantomime.
Devon and Nova, IIRC, the movie was filmed in English since most of the cast didn't speak German. In post the ADR was done in German and then the subtitles for the Anglophone bits of the world are in English. It's completely wild.
[Me, getting ready to do some clothing repairs] No, you're thinking of the excellent Swiss sewing machines; you're thinking of "Bernina "
Watched Bad Boy Bubby for the first time in decades the other day. There's a truck in it but spooky isn't one of the many words I'd use to describe it.
To embrace the 'tism for a moment, the bagpiper who famously didn't die on D-Day was a guy called Bill Millin, who landed on Sword Beach and arrived alongside the rest of his unit to relieve the paratroopers who had seized (among other targets) Pegasus Bridge. Gets me every time thinking about how it must have been for those young men to be fighting at that bridge, completely unaware of what anybody else is doing, under attack by literally everything the Germans have got in the area. They'd taken off the night before so they've been running on adrenalin, uncertainty and fear for like thirteen hours since their gliders crossed the Channel. Fighting tooth and nail all morning. Nobody really knows what is >supposed< to happen beyond their part of the plan so they can't give it up if they're captured. For all they know everybody's fucked it, the reinforcements are already an hour late, and that's got to be a really, really, really long fucking hour with fascists attacking with increasing desperation from both ends of the bridge. And then they hear >motherfucking bagpipes<. An all time Antifa moment, just saying.
Devon, if you’re looking for a vaguely spooky movie: Synecdoche New York, fucking fantastic film, doesn’t get talked about nearly enough
Dark City!
The enormous fish that they were throwing money at is an arapaima. Also known as a hammer-jaw, they lack teeth and use the calcified roof of their mouth to crush their prey. They also hold their newly hatched young in their mouth.
Devon - If you would still like a spooky-ish film suggestion, how about A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night? It's a favourite of mine and a film that definitely has *something* to say about masculinity (and femininity).
I remember hearing that hbomb was stuck in the United states/LA for the time being, I wonder if Abi and he see each other.
If you're still taking suggestions for a bonus episode, since you mentioned parodying 'Phantom of the Opera' might I suggest Brian De Palma's 'Phantom of the Paradise'. A rock musical about how capitalism is the death of art. Fantastic episode, the ongoing "no you're thinking of" bit really for me howling at work.
Beef
Hello Devon, consider Train to Busan. It’s a Korean zombie movie on a train! I think it says some stuff about gender but I haven’t really seen a lot of people talk about that aspect of the movie.
It does yeah
Oh yeah Abi's brother met HBomb covered in yogurt or however that "I'm the bastard prince" video went. It's been a while since I saw it
Devon, if you're looking for a spooky- adjacent film which will still fit with trucker season, how about the Stephen King film Maximum Overdrive? Guaranteed to be... a watch :)
That's the one King says he was on so much coke he doesn't even remember making it right?
Oh hey it's that film that they did a documentary about where a Herzog quote is taken from for use in the album version of the track "A Glacier Eventually Farts (And Don’t You Listen to the Song Of Life)" by Chris Christodoulou for the video game Risk of Rain 2 *Deep breath* Cool
God this is a terrible idea. But if you want something "spooky" and fitting in truck season then it has to be Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive. A movie he wrote and directed himself in the midst of cocaine fueled egomania. It's terrible, not necessarily in a good way. Oh wait. I forgot. A good King adaptation, John Carpenter's Christine. Now that's a banger.
Speaking of John Carpenter I think They Live is kind of a truck movie, at least spiritually. I couldn't tell you why other than the Rowdy Roddy Piper and dudes rock vibes of it all. The Abyss is kind of an underwater truck movie, in it Ed Harris is the most divorced a man can be while still being a wife guy. Vibes in that one are all over the place, it's sort of if we kind of did Alien but ended up in Close Encounters/Arrival by accident
Maybe they mentioned it and I didn’t hear, but there is a documentary by Herzog about his time with Kinski. It’s absolutely nuts and leaves you with the question who of them is the bigger lunatic. Its called my best fiend.
Werner Herzog, my neurodivergent GOAT.
Werner Herzog from the openings of the last series of Metalocalypse? Philosophy "Abigail Thorn" Tube was so close to saying that that opera would be better as a series of Tictocs, lol. Wait, they pulled the boat over land!? This was a plot point in an episode of Metalocalypse! I guess that was a reference, lol. Got caught in a loop for a bit there, it happens to all of us. God damn it, the subtitles bit again got me again. I look forward to hearing it next time, lol.
I feel like you've already talked about Fitzcarraldo for an episode length, so I'm very excited to finally meet it
art is the process by which the artificial, that which is made by art, is made; and because a system is what what a system does, art too is that which produced.
Mandalorian? You mean the villain from the Tom Cruise Jack Reacher movie "Conquistador of the Youchewb"
omfg, this is my all time favourite film, up there with, um, Jaws, and I am utterly terrified to see what you make of it.
