S4E46.5: True Romance

This week we're joined by comedian, entertainer, and magician Carisa Hendrix to discuss a movie packed to the gills with guys I love to see (one notable exception). Written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott, True Romance is a movie about two freaks finding each other and locking tf in.

Check out Carisa anywhere on the internet. Watch the clips and buy tickets to her tour here!

Alabama getting the final monolouge, along with winning the fight on her own, and not being rescued, would take the misogyny score down at least a point for me if we had some kind of science bases system, alas.

Tell me by how much I need to up my patreon subscrip to have yall do a Whole Plate-style bonus series on the Tarantino oeuvre with Lindsay Ellis. Seriously, genuinely, fully, tell me. I'll start saving up today. Just hearing Lindsay and November go off on MOVIE TALK together would make my entire life.

Are we still in truck season? Because I need to hear the pods reaction to Smokey & The Bandit, the ultimate truck movie and also technically a heist

Good God. Jackson Lamb is Drexl with an English accent. Damn.

S
ScienceDaddy · September 15, 2026

I'd you want more Christopher Walken being evil and creepy, and a cast that also includes Christopher Lloyd, Andy Garcia, Steve Buscemi, and Treat Williams as the apotheosis of 'Waingro', I'd love to suggest "Things to do in Denver when you're Dead" (1995). It's not a heist film (more of a shakedown-gone-wrong), but it's got the whole 'getting the crew back together for one more job' trope and it's just a hell of a ride!

You're on point with Tarantino thinking that all exploitation is fine as long as the character gets revenge, and boy does it not work this way with the viewers. Years later I still see the gifs of Samuel L Jackson's character in Django used by open racists because no one cares that this dude was wrong. These people are just happy to see someone be openly racist on the screen

J
Jimbobalinski · September 13, 2026

I think the reason why Dennis Hopper did a racism to Christopher Walkin was so that he would ensure a quick and easy death, rather than a prolonged and painful torture. Being a retired cop and a history buff, (as pointed out by the hosts), he would be intimately familiar with the various regional forms of racism, and probably intuited that Walkin had Advanced European Racism, and could be manipulated into a state of barely controlled rage. EDIT: Fun fact about Elvis: he would help his groupies do their nails and hair, and seemed very interested in feminine fashion and makeup.

The character of Drexl becomes a lot more clear once you realise that Tarantino wrote it for himself to play. That being said, the character's appearance was all Gary Oldman's choice.

Dev saying that going on a 3 movie kung fu binge would work of them as a first date in combination with the now legendary culinary tour of Chinese meals makes me think they're trying to hint to their wife anniversary celebration ideas, lol. TBF, a full day Chinese banquet that tours the reginal cuisines of where the current kung fu movie is set sounds like a cracking way to spend nine hours. I might give that a go - all I need is someone to have an anniversary with... EDIT: Oh shit! /This/ is where that scene is from? I was doom scrolling Youtube shorts, and I found an out-of-context scene titled as "The Best Movie Comeback" and it was the scene where the guy says that Sicilians are basically black in terms of racial hierarchy. I kept waiting for the comeback, but then the short started again, and I guess they thought all that esoteric racism was "best movie comeback?"

FreeBard42 · September 11, 2026

Conchata Ferrell was great in Two and a Half Men as the housekeeper, Berta, and was also in an episode of Buffy (iirc, the one where Xander joins the swim team to investigate why they keep turning into Gil-Men and one of them is a Debut Acting Role ~25yo Wentworth Miller.)

Kobal Deux · September 11, 2026

Fun fact : I suggested this movie to a zoomer friend who doesn't like violence in movies, because all I remembered was the Sicilian scene and how sweet and cute Slater and Arquette were together. She didn't like the movie AT ALL, for some reason ^^;.

I saw you guys doing this one, man its hella offensive in places. I love it but in places its rough. The "History of the Sicilan people" scene. Oldman playing that insane character. That bouncer with Oldman was the same guy from the cocaine buy scene in Boogie Nights. Playing the same character basically. Wild movie.

"In that word salad of yours, I heard something about drug dealing, but the thing is, Pfizer and Eli are a few billion ahead of you and can buy your death with the half cent it costs them to make a pill. You want the billboards? Download Photoshop and make yourself a cute portfolio. Stores? With the debt everyone is in, I'm sure they'll just give them to you, in which case you'll be owned by their banks. Trains are even more bankrupt, and don't even get me started on the NYPD. Even that blunt you wanna roll is gonna be marked up by Big Tobacco. This whole city is one big credit card bill, and you wanna pay for it so you can what? Become another suit with a mortgage?"

Tulpas manifest physical effects (as this reveals the illusory nature of the floating world) and they are collective phantasmagorical creations the Elvis DOES NOT display corporeality nor is it shared THEREFORE the mentor cannot be a tulpa; the mentor is a mere mirage or at most a haunting ... ... ... UNLESS, resolute to see in him a tulpa, and understanding that the ideaform of Elvis is Americana in extremis and the emblem of a man who died many deaths; we must conclude that a) it is the tulpa which causes the bullet not to harm the Inamorato.and b) the tulpa is formed by him but manifested into reality to deliver her beloved by our Columbina. Thus by a reckless act of reality they are allowed a folly

Speaking of menacing James Gandolfini, his character in Get Shorty has the same vibe until he gets thrown down the stairs by John Travolta. Sorry for the spoilers of :checks notes: 36 year old movie. Which does feature a heist. It could also be part of Hollywood season, which would be movies about movies.

I

f
foughtthelaw · September 11, 2026

Not really a heist but would love to see you all do a companion episode to this and do Natural Born Killers. More pre fame Tarintino screenplay shenanigans also staring Juilette Lewis (only it was more heavily edited by other people)

THANK YOU Carisa for pointing out Elvis was was played by Val Kilmer. Noone had mentioned him alongside all the other 'folks we love to see' and I was wondering if we'd get to the end of the episode without anyone commenting :)

I feel like I have managed to figure out the plot of most famous movies by pop culture osmosis over the years of not watching most movies. This is one movie I can honest to God say I don't know anything about besides Old Man in dreads Around 22:30- I'm channeling Felix Leiter and saying "Yeah naw you can't say that" Gary oldman/Elvis thing: Elvis became famous for being a white guy who performed black music

F
FelineJay · September 11, 2026

Fully frozen in shock when the actor of the guy in the episode art was revealed. I would never have guessed otherwise, but my fucking god, IT IS

F
FelineJay · September 11, 2026

Why did he take roles like this. He played a man with dwarfism in a movie that has actors with dwarfism. Why did they need him??

N
Nick the Peasant · September 11, 2026

Badlands xylophone, the most casual-seeming but pretty overt racism and Elvis haunting...some 90s joints had a very specific vibe to them. Happy Chilean coup day, love and inappropriate peachy dad kisses.

N
NowhereMan661 · September 11, 2026

Did you not realize that Tulpa Elvis is played by KJB favorite Val Kilmer?

B
Ben Schwabe · September 11, 2026

Abi askes "Is Christian Slater meant to be hot?" To which I can only say "Does Quentin Tarintino wish he himself was hot?" Elvis Tulpa is played by Val Kilmer! (Oh that gets mentioned finally.) My friends and I were heavily influenced by this movie. We were young nerds who really wanted to be cool.

F
Frejo · September 11, 2026

Quentin Tarantino thinks he looks like George Clooney. I think he has deluded himself into thinking he *is* hot
