S4E43.5: Sorceror
Today we're examining William Friedkin's re-adaptation of the novel on which Wages of Fear (1953) was based. Famously kneecapped in the box office by the release of 'Star Wars', Friedkin long held that if the movie was given it's proper due, it would have been his great breakout hit, and he would find himself amongst titans like James Cameron, Stephen Spielberg. Let's see if we agree.

I actually love paying money for 1hr+ hatchet job on one of my favourite movies
Just wanted to say it's great that yall are willing to talk about being in therapy, you don't know how much good that can do to help others take that step towards helpin themselves! One of my favorite things about yall is that you're all very emotionally intelligent, we need more voices like yalls in the world!
I'd settle for an "I'm your girlfriend" ⌚ 😅 If you find the secret Isle of Gay/Queer Femmes Looking To Become Wives though, please send location immediately 🙏 😅
Just rewatched Grosse Pointe Blank and holy Christ do they need to do this movie. It's like the thesis statement of KJB, is about dehumanization through masculine violence, talks about labor organizing, has a non derogatory transmasc joke
Playing fo4 rn, nice pull Nova 👍☺️
The "time annals" George Lucas had access to were Newt Gingrich's "promise to America" speech. He wrote the trade federation aspect of tpm in an angry haze after hearing that speech, and that's why the head of the trade federation is named Newt Gunray (Ronald Reagan + Newt Gingrich)
Sorry to hear y'all lack the drive to defeat death. Couldn't be me. Built different
Could y'all ease up on the anti-american sentiment? It's all in good fun but we're contractually obligated to be annoyingly patriotic when a non-American talks shit and my arm is starting to hurt from the eagle landing on it majestically. Jokes partially aside, do y'all need a consultant on American culture? I can't speak for the public at large but whenever a 'this is what Americans actually believe' tangent comes up I know more than a few of us are left puzzled. It's as if I was on a podcast and mentioned o wouldn't ever want to go to England because I don't want to learn all the silly walks or would be exhausted from the constant running back and forth while Yakkety Sax plays.
As an American I feel like participating in the world cup at all after pretending it didn't exist for decades is basically already an L no matter how the team does.
George Lucas actually asked William Friedkin to direct A New Hope, and Friedkin said he thought it looked like shit and he was gonna do his masterpiece Sorcerer instead. He aslo watched a test screening of Star Wars and told Lucas it would definitely bomb.
This is a critique of a critique, but to me, it seems a double standard to complain that the film lacks subtlety, and then to complain it doesn’t show the death of Scheider’s character on screen. Saying it was only kept offscreen so that American viewers would be able to think "That would never happen to me!" feels a bit of a false equivalence. The rest of the critiques about the film being dumber and louder are fair, as well as the characters lacking depth, but this particular critique is not. It’s saying it’s too subtle for the audience to get it, when the general critique until this point is that it’s not subtle enough.
Well. At time of me listening, England did just beat France in a World Cup game. I just think perhaps not in the way that they were talking about! I don’t know that Burnam will feel the need to mention it when he speaks to Macron.
Tout le monde devenez plus français MAINTENANT !
Fun fact about the bridge scenes, is that this whole production was kind of cursed, they spent a million dollars building this bridge and reinforcing it with hidden steel cables, thy built it at what they considered "the perfect river" in the Dominican Republic. It was 200ft long to cross the river and by the time they finished building the bridge IT HAD NOT RAINED FOR TWO WEEKS, so the river looked like SHIT and they had to MOVE THEIR MILLION DOLLAR BRIDGE to Mexico. Crazy
American November? Damn, call that a *fall* from grace, amirite fellas? 😂🔫
Yep, she called To Live And Die In LA an evil film. Turning the review off immediately
I’m gonna burst a blood vessel at this review aren’t I
Americans: Give us hell Devon and November.
When it comes to weird movies about the American saying nah I'd win. Y'all have gotta do Stargate at some point.
i went to Cannes Film Festival in 2016 with my film school, and saw Sorcerer at the free beach cinema they had! We were all sat on beach chairs with blankets over us in the sand, watching this movie being projected onto a screen on a barge in the water! It was really cool
How dare you say that about Americans. "Americans are the cheatingest people on the planet." I can't believe my ears. This is the deepest and most profound disrespect... OF AUSTRALIA. WE ARE THE CHEATINGEST PEOPLE ON THE PLANET JUST LOOK AT OUR CRICKET TEAM FUCK YOU NOVEMBER TEN THOUSAND YEARS BALLSCRAPING AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
C‘mon mate. The rest of us JUST finally got the English to stop blathering on about that One Time bullshit. It was nearly a decade ago and it wasn‘t even against England.
Bruno Cremer was a tremendous actor, he co-stared in The 317th Platoon, one of the very few films about the First Indochina War. That film (like The Battle of Algiers, released the same year) was very influential on war movies all over the world for his quasi-documentary style, it was shot by Raoul Coutard, the DP of the early Godard films and Costa-Gavras' Z (another banger), who was a war photographer during the conflict, and the director, Pierre Schoendoerffer, was an army cameraman who was captured in Điện Biên Phủ.
Saying Sorcerer was "the film that's going to put him on the map" is a crazy thing to say, William Friedkin won five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director for French Connection and then made The Exorcist, which was the fifth most successful movie of all time (it's still in the top 20 today when ajusted for inflation). He had complete creative freedom and used it all for this film.
Extended "It's coming home" bit followed by extended "Everyone hates Americans because they believe things will happen for them simply because of some intrinsic exceptionalism" bit. WE LEARNED IT FROM YOU, OK? WE LEARNED IT BY WATCHING YOU!
FUCK! FUUUCK I was so hyped for the wtyp crew to be on this show. For one of the three movies Rocz has seen!
I’m doing that really awful thing where you say something before finishing the episode but the OG Simpsons’ writers were big fans of Sorcerer and included an homage to it in ‘Mister Plow’ and got WF to sit in while storyboarding it or some such
I would argue Sorcerer is at least a little anti-capital. The oil company is depicted as pretty reprehensible. Then working conditions are horrid, they get the cheapest nitroglycerin they can, and don’t care about the dead workers or the safety of the drivers. That said, as a William Friedkin fan, William Friedkin was evil. Like a total piece of shit. And you really don’t want to know his opinions about Birth of a Nation…
And of course the uhhhhh Rumors
I think all us Americans (including myself) in the Blues Brothers comments may have proved Nova right (T_T)
Im glad their finally talking about American invincibility film All American media is like this and I think its why all of them are insane
[whispering to date while watching Sorcerer when Sorcerer first appears on the screen] That's Sorcerer
Say what you will about the OG Star Wars, but I feel that it somehow trusted the audience more.
if you think the show needs more Star Wars, the answer is obvious: Attack of the Clones with No Notes
Hate the fact that other Americans all think they'll never die, absolutely infuriating, they're so misguided. But I really would have avoided the rock though.
I would have died in the town from both humidity poisoning and treats withdrawal.
Delighted to live in the future and thus be able to salve all the anti-american slander (from! the fucking British! of all people!) by imagining how cool they're feeling right now about being beaten by Da Racist Argentine
... there is remarkably little sorcery for a movie called sorcerer. Like the truck isn't even used to give form to a daimon called forth from beyond the Moon. Not even some light necromancy. Like wtf. I expected, at least, some diesel smoke haruspicy
Also if one is putting in precolumbian imagery then one is beholden to geographic specificity or one falls into some serious racism & disingenuousness as to how empire operates with different locales. Thus one must ask: WHERE IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE Because if it is supposed to be Mexico; no it isn't we had nationalized oil during dub dub dos. But like where else can it be? It is clearly meant to be evoking Mexica skulls & like geography is wrong but also: The REASON Cortez makes any inroads is because the Mexica were a brutal exploitative empire & this pre 1940s oil company & the nation state which backs & the Cathmobolic Church it ARE ALL THE SELFSAME THING. The same flowing with different masks But the geography would be wrong & the politics are wrong so what indigenous people are those meant to be? Are the terrorists the Zapatistas (don't take into account those are more of a 1990s thing)? I mean for one classical Maya, see my comment on the Mexica, but twasnt Cortez but climate change. Or are we in the Andes? Not that many people are doing stone megaliths! The politics change
That Thorn thinks there is any daylight between Stilbon walking east & Hermes's festivity is afoot (far too dressed) is a calamitous disgrace. The effects of the rays are the thing & the motions of the sublunar world causes the stars to dance around the bear.
Being named William and having the gang yell about how stupid I am definitely activated something.
French term... is it Cher chaise lone femme?
The point about Americans being unable/unwilling to comprehend death and annihilation is something I could scream about for hours, glad to hear others make this observation.
lol wut? Are we all immortal over here or something?
Please do uncle boonmee who can recall his past lives
Something is coming home, but not it
I really enjoy the contempt for Americans expressed throughout this episode after having read the comments from Americans who could not accept that Abi kind of disliked Blues Brothers.
Can't believe that episode has 200+ comments of basically 'Abi, grrrrr'.
You don't need to do Star Wars. You need to do The Matrix. A movie that is absolutely about 9/11 and not about being trans. And then there's the two other Matrix movies which are about seeing Monica Bellucci and then spending the rest of your life wanting to see more of Monica Bellucci (Brotherhood of the Wolf and Dobermann, just saying). Ahem. Also must confess I feel kind of humbled by the Wages of Fear comparisons. I love this movie because I love watching two knackered trucks hauling stuff through bad terrain. I wasn't aware of just how much the director was leaving on the table out of fear (wages of) of being too clever for his audience. For shame.
Hard to think of an adaptation/remake being the next Star Wars, Star Wars was at least original. It wasn't very original but it was unoriginal in a way that nobody had ever done before.
I feel like this is another movie that will reinforce my stance of the world needing a Remake Stalin alongside the Climate Stalin
Far too hard on this movie, imo. I’m especially sour on some stuff after 2/3 of the crew’s abject refusal to engage with the Blues Brothers’ love and joy in black culture lol. Scheider’s death in this movie is more engaging because it is pretty much entirely out of his control, almost pre-ordained. He let his guard down for a single moment and got domed the fuck off in the back of the head, and all we could do was watch in horror. Mario’s death is entirely at his own hands and comes from a place of arrogance, maybe an overwhelming and disordered joy due to his trauma, but it’s still one of those scenes where the lead up feels clumsy and overwrought considering the rest of the movie.
Okay but thats the critique their making, its prodastant work ethic, death as a personal failure. The point of doing a film like this is capital sometimes annilates you through no fault of your own. Having it be because of lapses in judgement is the prodtant work ethic again, the only reason bad things happen is you didnt work hard enough.
I liked this movie because I did not see Wages of Fear first, because I'm American. Also I want late 70s Roy Scheider bad. I thought it was really tense, but the idea of the jungle being the enemy does feel very...us. Especially then. You know what movie handled the Vietnam War in a really interesting way? A little film called Star Wars.
Roy Scheider is another reason I want KJB to do All That Jazz, both so they can talk about the most self loathing movie ever made and so Abi can be baffled at who Bob Fosse is
technically it is coming home if you remember that spain and argentina are countries where people live
It would have been very funny to pre-empt a planned episode about Sorcerer with Star Wars.
Calling it now. It was Rocz. EDIT: I'm an idiot. It was Abby!
I’m surprised that you’re the only one who has said this. Perhaps everyone else is just being polite. I totally forgive whomever did it, but it was surely Rocz.
Earlly doors I'm now living in hope of a KJB sports movie season
Fuuuuck, you shot me directly in the chest with that ending announcement. You hyped me up, you put me in a white suit, I was celebrating the first ever WTYP/KJB crossover in the bar with a lady on my arm, and you assassinated me like the mob.
i can't believe that Activate Windows lost their local recording
Heartbreaking.
You know the grouching are Americans makes me want the crew to review Team America World Police if only for the chance to redline every aspect of the SCUM. It might be the most punished ep of KJB ever
My least favorite genre of movie is American remake that is inferior to the original in every possible way, which completely misses the point and makes a vapid facsimile of the original. Looking at you, "The Ring", "Oldboy", "The Wickerman", and "Death at a Funeral".
The wickerman remake is so specifcally bad im shocked they haven't covered it on the pod to compare Just a movie dripping with misogyny
Damn, I am going to pursue to the ends of the earth like a Catholic hitman whichever cohost denied us the WTYP crossover
Ironically, it was probably one of the two Catholics given their standards of PC care.
I think the English need to ask themselves what they did to it that makes it stay away from home for all these decades. As an American I'm delighted Belgium kicked our ass after Trump's intervention with Johny Baby. We deserved it.
I am just glad we can all go back to not giving a shit about soccer now
22:39 to be fair, we Americans are quite stupid and love to eat up propaganda.
Very much here for this review of Snowrunner on nightmare difficulty. Especially as I think Snowrunner did just add a tropical map.
Watched this with a firefighter trans woman who's only comment on the movie was the movie used the wrong kind of fire hydrant for New Jersey.
Queen tbh🧩🚒❤️
Man, it's a real shame that the UK government is a terrorist organization that prevents you from supporting people resisting colonization and genocide.
This movie was really enjoyable and my brain kept making the joke "what if we gave Frodo a truck?"
Frodo; cannot reach the pedals, relies on Sam to push gas or break or clutch to change gears. They run over a Nazgûl, blade still impales Frodo & Horse mangles the break line making the trip into Moria... who knew a Balrog could be fused into a truck?
November's use of the term Forsythian raises the big question of who's doing the day of the Jackal? KJB for the espionage vibes or be gay solve crimes for the detective angle?
Crossover episode But also KJB needs to do hitman/assassin season
Well, it's not coming home, but you've still got the "100 Years War Match For 3rd Place" to win.....so best of luck with that.
If sorcerer has 100 fans I'm one of them If sorcerer has 1 fan it's me If sorcerer has 0 fans it means I exploded in a truck full of nitroglycerine
uh oh. Turn the episode off
I fear the coming home status has changed for the worse since this was recorded.
We're keeping Miku though, she's in the British museum now and forevermore.
