S4E34.5: Armageddon
Let's examine further the character of the Trucker as an American shibboleth. At his heart he is a blue collar guy, a proletarian, a worker. This holds true even when the Trucker-coded guy is a literal oil millionaire, as in this stunning example of the mindset that killed the world: Armageddon. A meteor is going to wipe out humanity, and the only hope lies in letting a bunch of everyday american joes give it a red hot go.

- With the ceasefire in full effect, the media has returned to ignoring the daily atrocities in Gaza. My friend Ahmed still needs to feed his family and afford medicine. Anything you can kick in would be hugely appreciated.

Always wondered why they didn't send some gold miners and a couple of stone masons. Makes more sense given the mission brief. Just single jack it apart. Haha
Liv Agar
OMFG I OOVE THE WANDERING EARTH. ALSO THE WANDERING EARTH 2
The closest thing I have to a claim to fame is that I ripped the infamous clip of Ben Affleck mocking Armageddon from the Criterion track for my brother's Cracked.com listicle, though that clip didn't go viral until someone tweeted a copy of it months later. Nice to see people are still talking about it coming up on decade later. Here's the article if you're curious: https://www.cracked.com/article_23866_6-hilariously-uncomfortable-rants-dvd-commentaries.html
HURRAY!! Big trouble in little china!! thank you
Peter Stormare has been Russian Guyavich in soooo many things, I thought he WAS Russian. First thing I saw him in was the old Command & Conquer Red Alert games, so it was hilarious to see him on Armageddon when I was like 13-14. And you all HAVE to do watch Joy Ride! It combines Trucker Horror, Road Trips, and Paul Walker!
The most trucker coded movies of all time are smokey and the bandit, and convoy. If you're really committed to the noble saintly truck. You gotta do em
There’s also two other astronauts with no lines who die and are left in space forever
Is it wrong that I initially thought "the shapes place" was a Mr Maker reference?
I guarantee this puts more thought into Armageddon than Michael Bay did. Which is to say any thought whatsoever
As a loyal listener of Boney Island Whitefish, I can absolutely tell you about Devon's pineapple bun breakfast
been ignoring it lately but every time Abi references weight loss or the concept of being thin, bloody lesions open up all over my entire body. which is really inconvenient bc i listen to a lot of these at work
looking forward to the upcoming Space Cowboys bonus episode
I'm still promoting the idea that they should expand the Road Vehicles theme to Easy Rider.
"I'm naming the asteroid after my wife, because she's huge, rock hard, and I love being crushed by her"
The Wandering Earth is *wildly* sentimental but pretty fun.
This movie does make light of pedophilia but at least it doesn't textually contain a relationship between an adult man and the underage daughter of the main character. No, that would be Bay's later film Transformers: Age of Extinction, which contains an extended scene explaining that thanks to stretching the local Romeo and Juliet Law to its limit the relationship is not technically illegal.
Which involves that guy having a literal "it's ok because technically this is legal" card he carries in his pocket as he seemingly gets that shit so much
rock hound? more like rock spider
We watched this across 4 classes in US American high school science because we finished all the worksheets early
My senior year of high school we did a “bad physics in movies” project as a fun end of year thing after the AP exam. I picked this movie. The ‘unit’ I had to invent to express the nuke yield necessary to split the asteroid as depicted in any sort of comprehensible number was kilo-Yellowstone Supervolcanoes
I worked for a small Detroit area trucking company and spent most of my free time around truckers and various trucking company owners throughout the early and mid 2000s and can confirm they *loved* this movie. So far your insights into the dark heart of the American trucker are pretty spot on! If you’d ever like some input from a then-deeply-in-denial biker, now middle aged trans woman (an “Edsel” per NGNM) I’d be happy to share my thoughts 😁
Yessss, I am so pumped for Big Trouble in Little China. I don't know if Abby cheered louder, or I did when you said that was your next pick
Wondering if Nova is also a Public Service Broadcasting enjoyer, and also gets goosebumps during the song E.V.A…
I cannot tell you how much right now I need an episode of the gang talking about "space cowboys" the ultimate boomers in space movie. It's got guys I love to see, discussions about Kessler syndrome, keep the space trucker theme going 😁
Point: Space Cowboys is actually mostly Silent Generation Counterpoint: If they're so silent why can't they shut up about young people these days?
A "Michael Estuary," you say? It's funny tracking how Anti-America two thirds of this podcast are getting while the remainder remains an America-weeb, lol. EDIT: "You would not trust any of these men officially with your daughter, but together they're going to save the world." Dev just casually dropping the tagline to a movie where they send death row inmates into a melting down nuclear reactor knowing that they'll all be doomed and it's a mediation in the nature of sacrifice and whether a big enough good act can balance it a life of evil. EDIT2: November cam dangerously close to advocating a Boomer Jihad because that generation needs a heroic death for the world to heal...
Wait... Alien. It's about Space Truckers 😳
Only in a Michael Bay film would you see NASA run by a guy who looks like a moon landing hoax conspiracy believer.
“New Chud on the Block” got me good
"Russian guy wearing a shanka like it's still the Soviet Union" was a thing in the lib science show Eureka, about a blue collar red state common sense old-fashioned fed who is the Andy Griffith Sheriff of a military industrial complex company town. There's one episode where a guy comes from Siberia to pick up some sort of specimen, and he's wearing an ushanka with a hammer and sickle on it (the show takes place in like 2010.) Eagle-eyed me made the prediction that because he was acting like such an over-the-top stereotype with a hammer and sickle ushanka talking about vodka and siberia, that we were going to learn this is corporate espionage, and this isn't the real Russian guy... and then that never happened. That was indeed the real Russian guy. Oh, speaking of "the astronauts are like troops." I'm pretty sure that, generally, the astronauts are literal troops. Astronauts are very, very often Air Force / military people.
goddamn I forgot about that show, I know I watched the whole thing but I remember nothing material about the contents
YES, THANK YOU DEVON! BEST BONUS PICK YET!
I have to say, this isn't a movie about truckers, this is a movie about the oilmen who get blown up in Wages of Fear.
For All Mankind is amazing 10/10 would recommend.
Liv Agar?
peter stormare flappy earflaps ushanka lunatic was introduced and i was immediately concussed by the thought of “first as tragedy (fargo 1996 narrative function of pstorms ushanka lunatic), then as farce (michael bay)” also fargo feels like a sick mattie guest episode pull! maybe too over-discussed tho, so i hard understand if it’s not on the list
You will never read this but I strongly recommend you watch the much better prequel with the confusing name Wandering Earth 2
It's a second movie so it counts for podcast rules
Phony Blair
Why the hell does Bruce Willis have a shotgun at an oil rig anyway?
To deal with the ancient ones that his drilling may disturb
I am loving truck season. I feel like both of the new Mad Maxes would fit nicely
"Ben Afflecks Airbase" I heard there's a really horrible and ill-conceived trans mural there.
Steve Buscemi also was in ghost world. He really was type cast as pedo Chud for a while
I hate Michael Bay and I hate every single thing he has ever made. There is this pure, undistilled juvenile Americaness that oozes from every pore on his body and leaks onto every movie he touches. It is the moronic Id of the United States manifested into an audio/visual medium. The racism, the sexism, the transphobia, the homophobia, the endless felacio of the American military, the dudebro frat house cruelty and stupidity, is is all repulsive to my very being.
Is it because he was in advertising? Like everything is a cliched lowest common denominator stereotype mixed with attention grabbing spectacle?
It's so funny all the speculation about the military space shuttle in the 90s which was a real thing that they were building and 30 years later they still haven't finished it. They have two half size drone versions. I think they've basically cancelled the manned version. This was a more or less finished design they bought from NASA in the mid 90s.
I assume youre talking about the x-37b, is there a broader project name for the full size version that you know of? Curious about this cause I was under the impression it was just a standalone program basically to regain the capability to fuck around with other people's satellites that was lost when the space shuttle program ended
Can anyone help explain what the joke is around 18:00, the 'can't say that in UK' bit. Feel like I should get that but have no idea what they're on about...
I think it might have to do with their censoriousness regarding kink in general; I remember mostly the face sitting prohibition
OwT my name wasn't read out this week
Genuinely so excited for the Wandering Earth episode, a way cooler and more interesting movie
Oil workers to asteroid: you can't destroy the world because that's our fucking job!
i didnt know much about this movie beforehand so this entire episode was just it dawning on me that this is required viewing for understanding Homestuck
Ice Pirates is a space heist movie with space trucker vibes.
I have never been more prepared for an episode, I feel like I did the homework ages ago. Thank you, older sister who had a ridiculous crush on Ben Affleck in the 90s.
“If you are aware of this movie it’s from the drunk Ben Affleck commentary track” Joke’s on me, because I know this movie from H*mestuck
I watched it in cinemas I was... holy shit... 10?! 2 years earlier I walked out of Disney's Hercules over the lack of familicide & theological abomination. That same year I had embraced atheism & then disavowed it on learning of Richard Dawkins The next year I would become addicted to coca leaf & my parents would be divorced. & I ain't tracing any causal links (there were other issues) but having the horrifyingly precocious pagan pontifex who threatened to run off & join seminary while chugging coca leaf tea can't have helped
I just want to point out that there's an actor in this movie called "Grayson McCouch" who looks like evil Jared Keeso.
Re minigun: do bullets work in vacuum? (Ding) Combusting gunpowder feels quite oxygen dependent.
Actually no. Smokeless gunpowder contains its own oxidizer so as long as it’s not black powder in the bullet casing you should be able to fire it in a vaccum.
So disappointed you didn't SCUM this like you did the Sex and the Cities (Sexes and the City?) given how high the total likely would have been.
Sexes & the City is China Tingle's fusion dance novel
The other commentary track is the NASA science advisor and like a production designer and the NASA guy spends the whole time saying “they didn’t listen to me here” and “that isn’t how that works” And Michael Bay asked for those Blackbirds, as long as they didn’t film the back of the engines. “Antimatter would do this but they don’t let us research antimatter bombs”
Criterion collection, by the way
thank you for teaching me the meaning of the term shibboleth! Saw it in the text and went down a Wikipedia-rabbit hole ❤️
That's not shockingly young Ben Affleck. Shockingly young Ben Affleck is watching the 1988 PBS TV series "the second voyage of the Mimi" in your middle school history class in 2005 and suddenly realizing the kid in the green baseball shirt is a 15-year old Ben Affleck and blurting it out loud and your classmates not believing you
If we're doing truckers in space I think Alien and Event Horizon are technically in play as bonus picks
Event Horizon is like space firetruckers
Do you think God lives on an asteroid because he, too, fears the trucker?
I was baffled by the animal crackers scene
Oh I was 10. & gay. I think I wanted Diehard & Batman to make out & had no words for that
Wow just in time
Everyone's gotta listen to Ben Affleck's commentary on this movie.
I... benaf is such a whiplash of a man for me & I've been gaybrainrattled into being into him. I mean you can't see someone ballcrush Bill Maher with Facts Logic & Having a Soul & not get turned on
Someone, for the love of all that's holy, please convince them to watch the actual space trucker movie Space Truckers (1996)
MITTENSPIDER!
I wanna close my eyes, I want to sleep because the horrors have made me eepy.
I'm at attention waiting for someone to begin singing Aerosmith. All I know about this movie is Die Hard guy, and I DONT WANNA CLOSE MY AHHHHS!
There is nothing else but that. Diehard & weirdly incestuous Aerosmith
