S4E28: Bicycle Thieves
It's our final heist movie of the year, and it's time to flip the script a little. A union man in immediate postwar Italy is assigned a job putting up posters. The pay is enough to finally give his family some stability, but it requires a bicycle. When his bike is stolen on his first day, he and his remarkable young son search through the markets and back alleys of Rome to find it.

FREE PALESTINE
Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.
-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla

-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patches

I am reminded of this line from Synecdoche, New York: “There are nearly thirteen million people in the world. None of those people is an extra. They’re all the leads of their own stories. They have to be given their due.”
Uhhh, did anyone else catch November's "Why didn't I think of that" line when they joke about Bruno just saying no to the pedophile? An I overthinking this?
Can't believe I'm about to go all "as a black person" but I just don't think this movie deserved a 2 for omission on cultural insensitivity, especially since you gave it a 1 for misogyny (where I think Nova had a point)
I need kjb bad lieutenant 2 in the new year
thank y'all so much for exposing me to a bunch of movies i would have never seen without this podcast. Sexy Beast and Topkapi were absolute bangers. now, i am _pleading_ with y'all, before Heist Season ends, please do David Mamet's 2001 _Heist_ with Gene Hackman, Delroy Lindo, Danny DeVito and a bunch of other guys you love to see, walking through a bizarrely intricate plot and spouting the most head-scratching unnatural and yet utterly ingenious dialogue at each other. it's so good. you have to see it. Tim Rogers loves it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cliSJ5splwc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaJlaK_dg_E&list=PLLBxmuPY0SHlo7fDl2DLOWRVG91IzBuj1&index=2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9cvJie4yFc
I remember going to a restaurant called Mama Roma and when my mum asked why there was only pasta and no pizza on the menu the waiter looked like she had shot him and said "we are Mama Roma, not Mama Napoli!" Unfortunately for these, as we later learned, very recent immigrants, Australians don't understand that Italy is made up of about 20 distinct provinces and will see the Italian flag and order pizza; so they eventually gave up and started serving pizza. EDIT: Watching this movie 12 times in a row (or on 12 simultaneous monitors) is the moral equivalent of watching Rambo 4 once.
wow, a 77-year-old movie on the pod
As someone who lives in a city with a lot of bicycle theft (copenhagen) this is exactly how the police treat it.
This was a fun coincidence for me that they're doing Bicycle Thieves this week. I've been going through the back logs of The Worst of All Possible Worlds and I just listened to their episode on the same movie a couple of days ago.
the comment abt noone helping chase the thief brings to mind many (4) times when I have been performing in a club, have seen a man hit a woman and the crowd just be like "give em some space, not our problem!". Always love bounding off stage to engage a valid target, but dislike what it says abt my conspecifics.
You guys should watch Aimless Bullet (Obaltan) (1961), a South Korean movie that’s very much in dialogue with this one and also features a heist and it is also very good
The poster in Shawshank was a film reference and I'm 20 years late finding this out.
The short story is even called "Rita Hayworth and the shawshank redemption!"
Can't wait for the just announced J. J Abrams remake of this film. J.J. insisted that it be set in 1980's suburban Indiana. Bruno is supposed to make friends with some girl who has telekinetic powers, and they're going to fight a Cenobite from an evil alternate dimension. Abrams was quoted as saying, "You know, fidelity to the source material. That's the most important thing about all of this."
Poverty echoing through history. This Italy is why Australia has such good coffee.
"If I can't fuck around onstage, I don't want to be part of your revolution" - Emma Goldman.
I had a violent home invasion and my roommate subdued the man. The cops were just about as effective with that as the ones here. Which is *WILD* that they believed the home invader (man) who said he thought he was in his house over the two women who had never seen him before. I didn't want for him to go to jail as much as to have a victims impact statement to the judge and compensation from the victims of violent crimes fund. That was the point I really lost any faith I had in law enforcement.
I bring this up to make the point that with quite a bit of personal experience I have even less faith in law enforcement.
A fantastic film, glad you guys reviewed it! I was wondering something: you point out all these institutions and societies (society) fail Antonio, except for the communists who might offer a solution (in the future, perhaps). Except of course IRL communism failed to.
Can't get a tourist visa to visit America because of the damned post inspectors.
If you want magical neorealism you should do uncle boonmee who can recall his past lives
this is one i am going to have to watch later
I listened intently through the post-film "what did we learn" and SCUM segments expecting to hear November say "listen to Blood Work", but Chekov's gun never fired
We have a science based system, it stands for Socialism, Communist sensitivity, Under dog sympathy, Marxist intent.
The sequel is TheGodfather movies
The dynamics of north south in Italy are HIGHLY racialized but like you are seeing whiteness angloly
Wrt the rich guy calling himself a poor soul, there's a Christian reading of this, which is that he is spiritually poor, with all his money and status he doesn't do a single thing to actually help people, he's not a good christian, he's just not realizing why he's spiritually a broke bitch. Eye of a needle and all that.
ThankYouDevon.wav
So this means no Inception episode in Heist season? Possibly the most smarmy Heist movie I've ever seen 😅
I appreciate that y'all couldn't even gin up a fake "we didn't like this movie" bit cause it's just that good lol
