FREE PALESTINE
Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.
-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla
https://www.waterislifegaza.org/
-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patches

verbal has the same hairline as Dracula flow
Catching up on older episodes, so I'm late to suggest this: given how much trouble you had figuring out what his deal is, Kaufmann Star for "Kobayashi"?
Two weeks late bc I did stop until I watched the film for myself BUT on the topic of the homosexual themes: if we assume the crew were real, I'd like to make an argument that Fenster and McManus were textually gay. Mostly small things, like Fenster saying in the police lockup he had a finger up his ass and making jokes about seeing someone else's dad. But also McManus' very sentimental insistence that they bury Fenster with their own hands, that Fenster was "his partner for five years" (probably not how that word was intended in the nineties, but it colors my reading nonetheless), the fact that to my knowledge he was the only one who didn't crack a gay joke at Fenster OR push back about the "honeymoon in California." That being said, I don't think this is impactful on the SCUM score, and might even complicate it if the read-as-textual gay guys are the foppish one and the guy in a racist hat.
Taking the opportunity to once again suggest you look at Heist (2003). I grant that David Mamet (who directed it) absolutely blows, but the cast is stacked and I think it has some interesting things to say about masculinity!
Excited to hear the gang talk about tilda Swinton more.
This is wicked late in the comments, but ... is 1986 Iron Eagle a heist movie? It has two heists: one, stealing 2 fully loaded F16's from the USAF. Two, a prison break (so stealing back a person).
I wonder if y’all are doing point break 1991, point break 2015, or both. Reckon I’m gonna plan on both.
I know it doesn't strictly fall under 'heist' season but I'd love to hear an episode on 'LA Confidential', one of my favourite films (along with 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and 'Josie & the Pussycats' - I'm eclectic!)
Random thought, could Glengarry Glen Ross be a heist movie?
"this is a movie you can get spoiled for you" yes, indeed, by this very podcast! see, s2 ep 2.5 winter kills
The true unbridgeable Millennial/Zoomer divide: did a film podcast spoil this film for you or VH1’s “I love the 90’s”?
So something i don't quite get is that Keyser Soze orchestrated this entire elaborate plot in order to assassinate the one guy in the world who knew his face. And then at the end he gets away, but now there's a whole police station who knows what he looks like. So it doesn't seem like he's really gained anything out of all of this.
He didn't expect the Hungarian crew member to survive, but as he says "You think a guy like that comes this close to getting fingered and sticks his head out? ... After that, my guess is you'll never hear from him again."
I would like to nominate the unnamed Hungarian man burned to a crisp and still give a description of the devil for the Good Night Cross. Also, would you please consider looking into Kelly’s Hero’s?
Kelly's Heroes needs to seen. If only for Donald Sutherland's tank polycule.
Lots of good out of context Devon clips in this one, “I love you Kevin Spacey” and “I could kill so many presidents” being the two most notable so far.
90 min podcast, no mention of the name being a reference to "round up the usual suspects" from Casablanca. THat's ok, I'll keep listening.
I don't know whats wrong with me but every time "Keaton" is mentioned my mind goes to Michael Keaton who is not in this film
I love Tactically Getting Yourself Beaten Up, it's such a film noir mainstay. Done amazingly well in Brick where it's basically the protagonist's superpower.
Oh fuck I love Pete Postlethwaite. One of the best to ever do it, rest in peace man.
it’s been a little aggravating to still hear this disdain from abi regarding the technical side of filmmaking - a bit rich from someone who in the past has referenced her wanting to write and direct her work
While I was surprised that she didn't know what a split diopter shot was, I think her comments are jokes aimed at her two podcast co-hosts who are specifically camera nerds Iirc Devon and/or November are both avid hobbyist photographers and I don't think she would have made those jokes if they weren't
All the discussion of Zenigatafication makes me think some sort of Zenigata Sheild would be a much awarded addition to heist season
Compare and contrast: Frank Oz's "The Score" (2001), a heist film starring Edward Norton, Robert De Niro, Angela Bassett and Marlon Brando (in his final role), in which Edward Norton pretends to have an intellectual disability as part of the heist plan.
I keep forgetting that movie exists. I don't know how.
kevin spacey got the dracula flow haircut in this
I swear every like 5 years Bryan Singer gets accused of noncing and all of Hollywood gets factory reset and he still finds work
Spacey was working on a Gore Vidal biopic when shit came out. I woulda loved it. Shame on him for a few reasons.
I love the Great Audiophile Hour!
On the subject of "Technically a heist movie" it might be good to talk about Reservoir Dogs. A heist movie where you don't see any of the actual heist
I wonder if that and Goodfellas are in the “what more can be said” category like Knives Out, where theyre just so famous and talked about that it wouldnt be interesting for them to talk about on the podcast
You left out a major role on your list of Kevin spacy evil genius performances, namely his appearance as the major antagonist in the fictionalized palmer luckey biopic "call of duty advanced warfare"
The Three Homos merch when?
Speaking of Zardoz, my Trans Date and I are gonna take acid and watch Zardoz this evening.
So how did it go?
Falling asleep to my Quebecois French instructional cassette and waking up sissy hypnotized.
tabernak j'ai besoin d'un petit peluche requin
As a person who is wayyy to involved in the American car and street racing scene, I'm saving all my criticisms for your reviews of the fast and furious franchise lol
I insist that they do them in chronological order.
You gotta do Baby Driver, the movie where Kevin Spacey has groomed a vunerable young man and loudly praises that young man's balls.
Didn't the young man from that movie later get accused of misconduct with at least one young female fan?
I feel like Abi is making a specific joke about Finnster but I'm really not online so I have no idea what she's talking about 🤔
This was my favorite movie that I watched waaaay too many times back in the day. Very well made movie, sadly. One of my favorite, tiny easy to miss bits is that early in the movie Agent Cullion say "You know how to catch a criminal? Arrest the guys you think who did it, and keep them in the cell overnight. The one who falls asleep is your guy, because he knows he's caught and he relaxed." And then when you look at the scene of the criminals in the cell after the lineup, the only calm and relaxed one, lying down on the bench, is Hockney. The guy who did steal the gun parts.
Where are the drops
Please watch "3000 miles to graceland" for heist season. Its the best worst movie. It will break the SCUM record hands down.
Looking forward to the Zootopia and Bad Guys episodes after this one
Zardoz finally being recognized as a work of unparalleled genius.
Does anyone else think that the Hungarian guy saying Keyser Soze sounds like Mike Myers doing a Scottish accent?
I do now.
I thought the homophobia was interesting because whatever else they might be the star and director are gay so I looked up the writer. As far as I can tell he's straight and is also the writer and director for the most recent mission impossible films which is interesting for a different reason because that franchise in its earlier days was a sort of tasting platter for different well known directors.
I'm a random nobody, what would some rich prick like Kevin Spacey care if I called him a murderous rapist pedophile? Which he is. Delete this comment if you need to, but I'm not retracting that statement.
The problem is that people in the UK have far fewer protections around libel and slander lawsuits. There isn't a UK equivalent of the 1st amendment's protections on freedom of speech.
My first thought was "Pedophile hour? What an outrageous lie. There's no way this is only an hour long."
Hell yeah, JFK Reloaded! Fun for a few hours of dicking around alright.
If this episode is less than 50% beeped out libel, you have failed!!
Fuck, its libel when its in print, its slander when its spoken...
Ok, the intro threw me for a bit of a loop because I sounded so much like a fakeout. I starting thinking oh, who else is there in this besides Spacy and Singer. Is James Woods in this? Phenomenal actor. Might be a guy-I-love-to-see if he weren't such a reprehensible cunt in real life.
