It's the holiday season once again, so we're back with KJB Christmas Staple John McClane to check out yet another Die Hard movie
It's the holiday season once again, so we're back with KJB Christmas Staple John McClane to check out yet another Die Hard movie. And I gotta say, the first and second were maybe- MAYBE! - christmas movies. This one is set in the middle of a hot New York City summer.
Happy Holidays, from our podcast family to your real family. Or just to you, if your family sucks. Fuck your family actually 🖕🖕

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live. Attached is their gofundme, as well as three others that I can vouch for the authenticity of.

Just gave this episode to relisten, and it occurred to me that Jerry is definitely a Patreon member for WTYP
“Sam Phillips said that the sequence where Katya uses a knife to slice up a security guard until he is dead was hard for her to film, but she also admitted that it became easier when she noticed the actor playing the guard looked sort of like a real person she despised: Rush Limbaugh.”
I love you sweet youths. The Hillary Clinton joke was a misogynistic joke about how Hillary was actually in charge and Bill was hen-pecked.
Devon - as an American union film worker — I love you. Also, as me just as a person, love you all. But yes. We want to make movies like this still. But the tech companies that own the studios don’t think you do.
Thanks for the shout out. I have no way to start blasting, but your episodes do make my 12 hour security shifts go faster
This movie holds a lot of importance to me in that a shitload of my friends made this kind of thing their identity in the year of our lord 2009.
at my high school we thought this was cool enough to base our core "friends with the other awful nerds" identities on the jokes this movie made in particular
Self-taught horologist Aldis Hodge??!
They did the Woker lmao
Just wanna plug a few other fun Shane Black movies - The Nice Guys and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - which are also both crime movies AND Christmas movies!
I rewatched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang so many times many years ago, very fun
If someone tells you to talk white, hit em with the okie dokie
the yakult shot joke is an all timer lmao
The German "Zeus", "Tsoyss" completely knocked the wind out of me. Incredible. And perfect pronunciation.
Assuming that they don't start making a new Die Hard every year before the end of 2027, and also there is an end of 2027, there's pretty much the whole filmography of Shane Black
I dunno if I'll be the first to mention this but Terry Pratchett, when picturing Lord Vetinari in his mind, pictured Alan Rickmann's Hans Gruber as the voice and mannerisms. When it came time to cast Lord Vetinari in The Colour of Magic (a shit bbc adaptation) they got Jeremy Irons. Quote Pratchett "I had to settle for Grubers Brother".
I wonder what he (would have?) thought of Charles Dance in Going Postal!
re: the dwindling paramedic jacket budget, i was very intent on stealing the thigh-high compression socks the hospital gave me to wear during my top surgery but by the time i came out the other side of it, I was too high and forgot. only part of it I regret. thanks for a great year of podcast!
This is an extremely strange experience to watch if 1) you grew up in 90s NYC 2) your partner’s name is Simon 3) Your old place is clearly visible in the background of a big shot
Like I cannot get over how specific this movie is to 1997 NYC - 9th avenue IS the fastest way to get downtown, no heavy trucks aren’t allowed on east side highway it’s all landfill, Jeremy Irons is like monologuing across the street from my friend’s apartment, the radio show they call in is Elvis Duran who was the voice of drive time NYC, the looming specter of Gray’s Papaya which put a sign for a “recession special” in the 90s and just never took it down, or just that the first explosion was at Bonwitt Twiller, a local department store that lost their first flagship location to …Trump Tower. Also McClane gets shot out of the tunnel much in the same way a guy famously did so working on the Hudson tunnel which I think they covered on WTYP Also I know it was a joke but John McClane as Mr. undiagnosed ADHD really fucking fits
It is a shame that the KJB missed the fact that the bomb mechanism itself is the metaphor taken sraight from the nazi manual. Two stable liquids becoming explosive only after mixing, isn't quite obvious for blood laws, racial supremacy and other nazi/eugenics mythology. Very visual metaphor and foreshadowing for the politics of the movie.
Obviously Jerry is the MVP of the episode, but special shout-out to the shitbag little kid who says "You could steal City Hall" in the most Noo Yawk way possible. And, as always, renewing my recommendation for y'all to watch How to Steal a Million.
Hearing them talk about Kowalski- HOLY SHIT THEY HAVE TO DO "RAISING ARIZONA"
ok for star wars episode 2 we need to know whether or not this podcast is pro or anti confederacy of independent systems
Also could be the first podcast episode made entirely out of drops
As someone who has a shit family, i genuinely appreciate the holiday greetings for me. Cheers
Since we all agree, as leftists, that colonialism is inherently robbery I suggest for Robbery Season the 1996 Val Kilmer vehicle The Ghost and the Darkness. It has everything the gang loves: Val Kilmer, guns from one of my favorite IMFDB pages, a depiction of Brit colonialism worthy of criticism.
For some reason I always get that one mixed up in my head with White Hunter, Black Heart.
Honestly I’m with Devon on the Complete Google Brain Collapse, I have googled like that before and you do really just have to look at it, you can’t just delete it and move on
When you run out of Die Hards remember that The Fellowship of the Ring set out from Rivendell on the 25th of December, thus making LotR Christmas movies.
Lotr is the Bart to Harry Potter's Hugo. Or possibly the Hugo to it's Bart. Can't remember which is the evil twin.
Merry Christmas!! Been really looking forward to this episode. (Though no mention of how hot Jeremy Irons is in this movie??)
I nominate The Shining as a potential Christmas movie once you run out of Die Hards, it's got snow in it so it counts as Christmas
Fuck Shining. Kubrick and Nicholson did mental violence to Shelley Duvall when doing it to pump up the shoots. Kubrick and Nicholson gaslighted Duvall and used her fears against her will to build up fears. This is shoddy directing and lousy acting. I do not want Shining on KJB for this reason ever. I do not want to watch or have fun from art when somebody was intentionally harmed without their consent in making it. Woe to directorbros and actorbros who do it to colleagues (and woe to anybody else who harms people during work).
For the record, "next location" would be "prochain emplacement" probably
This episode of the podcast is hauntology for millennials.
Merry Christmas to all the hogs
much less than 50% of americans live in new york but new yorkers certainly think that's the case
November no! You can't admit to the MTA grate theft while you are trying to get customs to let you into the country for the Northwest Corri-tour
Been looking forward to this all year regrettably
The beautiful blonde lady with the knife is super talented Grammy nominated singer-songwriter and composer Sam Phillips. She had never acted before but - per interviews she gave at the time of the film's release - the director saw her on the black and white film noir-ish cover of her then-recent album, Martinis & Bikinis, and decided he wanted to cast her in the role. She initially turned down the role because she was not an actress but he kept asking so she eventually agreed on the condition that he make her character mute because she feared she wouldn't be able to deliver lines. He agreed and the rest is history. I was already a big fan of hers at the time and I lost my mind when I saw her in the film when I watched it in the cinemas - she was the reason I went back to see it a second time. Cuz that's my level of music nerditude.
We were robbed of a Die Hard where John gets blackout drunk, loses his gun, and has extremely weird conversations with the fascist voice in his head. But since he's a cop, we can take it as read
Fanfic?
Very good episode!! Mery Chrysler!! I am like 98% sure I heard Devon burp at 51:06, 10/10 episode I loved it
YES! Time for the best Die Hard!
"Half of all Americans are New Yorkers or something" I'm going to make a called "This will appear in a KJB Highlights clip" shot
PLEASE tell me you're including the alternate ending as well!! It's on YouTube and soooo good.
When I first saw this film it was on a plane, meaning it was the safe for TV version. Which means John McClane was made to wear a sign saying "I hate people", with this blatant display of misanthropy causing much consternation amongst onlookers. "Hey, this guy says he hates [FELLAS]", one was heard to cry. "I don't think the sign says that," I thought to myself.
Eyyyy, they bring it up!
Merry Christmas everypony
Great blastin timing
first (merry xmas) (not first don't yell at me)
Merry bondsmas to all!
YIPPIE KI YAY FATHER CHRISTMAS
Been looking forward to this one all year
merry christmas fellow KJBheads!
