October Bonus: Semaglutide Discourse And The Making Of Our Ozempic Episode
Phew! We had a wild month putting our Ozempic episode together and we wanted to process how and why it was so difficult with each other and our closest internet-friends. We also wanted to have a looser, less formal recording session to rant about some of the worst Discourse we've seen. Join us in a big group EXASPERATED SIGH.
We're also sharing a moment of transparency and vulnerability about making this show. We love doing this and it's been tough to put out episodes at the quality we want to lately, so we're taking a minute to think through our release schedule for the next few months. To be clear, the show isn't going anywhere — we're just figuring out a pace that allows us to keep making it for a long time at the level of rigor and quality that you expect from us. Whatever happens with the main feed, monthly bonus episodes will continue here uninterrupted.
As always, you can play the episode directly through Patreon or use our RSS feed to add it to your podcast app. Here are the instructions from Patreon.
Thanks for your support and for bearing with us,

(2-1/2 years late to the party) What - it's really EE-MYOO ?????
I listened to your ozempic episode months ago, but am only now listening to this and I want to say, I deeply appreciate the work you did. I am a fat lady who tries to work against anti-fatness and I chose to go on ozempic to lose weight to help with the arthritis in my hip. (Anyone reading this - please know I’m not advocating this, to be completely honest I believe the physio therapy has made a much bigger difference for me, also, I just am not an expert). I have never felt you were telling me what to do with my body and I have never felt judged. I think you strike the balance of “here’s the science” and “you have autonomy” really well. I appreciate all the research that goes into your shows and I appreciate your approach.
I feel so much less crazy when I go to the doctor since podcasts like this help me know that the system is the issue, not me
Hi! I just wanted to hop on here and let you know I’ve relistened to your Ozempic episode and this reaction dozens of times. My mom had a diabetic stroke in 2011 and just got put on Ozempic instead of insulin and her a1cs are so much better, but her dramatic weight loss has been so frustrating for me and my sister (both fat) to navigate. She’s constantly preaching about how we should go on Ozempic (I have never had an a1c over 5.2), and how she didn’t realize she overate until she was on Ozempic, but she’s still 20 pounds away from being “underweight”… thanks for all the research and such a succinct summary.
My brain "pings" with food. It is like I am constantly bombarded with ideas of food, meal ideas, thoughts of snacks, I have a Google map of where to get the best chocolates, etc. I was told Ozempic would help with that, it would cancel all that food noise. Knowing what side effects the drug has I told that coach (yep, a coach) that the side effects were not worth it. I already have celiac disease, I don't need extra discomfort making me afraid I was contaminated.
Only recently became a subscriber and am getting caught up on bonus content. I feel a little guilty being on Ozempic and being excited about it because I feel like I'm contributing to this trash discourse. But it's really helped me manage my diabetes and liver disease and I can feel the difference when I'm off it. I hate that this life changing medication is being given this treatment :-/
Don’t feel bad, they aren’t criticizing people taking ozempic. The discussion is more a criticism of the media and public discourse around ozempic as “Ending obesity as we know it!”. Even with the data on it’s peak weight loss effects, it will not end obesity and we’re so focused on the weight loss part that we aren’t thinking about the people, like yourself, for whom the other primary effects of the medication are life changing and necessary to their health. And of course the moment any treatment comes out that may have weight loss effects , we run with it without being critical or cautious. Overall, Aubrey and Mike are very Pro “Do what you want with your body” and are more focused on discussions of systemic forces than individual people
Fun fact: the American "aluminum" is actually the original spelling. Oh and when people insist Melbourne "it's not Melburn, it's Melb'n" ...not in an American accent, it's not.
As an ex dietitian I adore your pods …..I was always the heretic questioning what we were advising….and why it didn’t work… Soooo informative and sooo funny often love you guys
This was a really interesting episode. I appreciate the care and information that all of your episodes have. My mom is the person who mentioned weight loss drugs to me. She asked if I heard of them and if I wanted to take them. I love her, and it was a really sad experience.
I thought y'all did a great job moderating the struggles with this issue. I'm on wegovy and extremely conflicted when I try to square it with my support for fatter people. Your episode made me feel heard while helping me stay on course with supporting other choices and other bodies. ❤️
Interesting Vox article on semaglutides effect on liking versus wanting in the brain and other off lane uses, though very light on discussion of potential side effects: https://www.vox.com/science/24086968/glp-1-ozempic-semaglutide-craving-desire-science-wanting-liking-opioids-alcohol
I'm really sad this isn't called "Catching a Semaglu-tude about Semaglutides", but I can be OK 🤣 Love you both!!!
I would happily listen to an hour and 45 minute episode! ❤️
It's okay, Mike. Peter can handle it. It will give him something to do besides putting up those shelves.
Omg perfect comment 🤣
Fan fruhm Turrono approves of your prununciatiun. ;)
“Lower North Side” 😩😂 Mike you are the best!
Would love to know how often Mike has gotten comments on “niche”
Quick question - at 16:30 in the public Ozempic episode Aubrey says "except this is not roughly the same thing and is hazardous to human health. Semaglutide sodium is not cleared for use in humans because it is bad for humans." Is it known to be hazardous, or it's not studied so we don't know it's safe? If it's been found to be hazardous I'd like to share that with some friends.
I love how these comment sections are mostly all positive comments or respectful constructive criticism.
In regards to you guys putting in SO much work for every episode (I’m sure I’m not alone in saying this) while I love heavily researched episodes like the one on ozempic, I also still love the “simpler” episodes (although knowing how much research you guys do/how much you put into every episode, I could be wrong in assuming these ones require less research) like halo top, celery juice, etc. what about only very occasionally doing ones that require heavy research (and only when you have the time/capacity to do it!! We all want you to take care of yourselves) and then doing ones that bring you a bit more joy to kind of just poke fun at and talk about?? Anyways, I appreciate this podcast more than I can put into words and have so much admiration for you both. Hope you’re both able to take some time for yourselves 🧡🧡
Oh this was the first episode of your show that I had ever heard and I immediately had to go to Patreon and say THANK YOU! This % &$#@ Ozempic stuff even for a diabetic is really rough. As soon as I got on it I was immediately struck by how much people are so into your "weight loss journey" and it's not even intentional or permanent.
Omg having people at work that I've never met ask me about my weight loss... I usually told them something uncomfortable about my several disabilities lol
Gosh thank you so much for this. I needed to hear this from 2 of the most unstoppable people I know of. I just recently realised I was also burnt out and I was feeling really confused, embarrassed and guilty about it. This just swept those thoughts away. Thank you. Also it’s aluminium😅😅😅
Thanks for role modeling self care and for talking about the reality of weariness from this work
RELEASE THE EPISODE ROUGH CUTS
Whoa
I was surprised by the responses from some of the patrons, but I for one am a big fan of the less formal bonus episodes. I love the banter and friend chemistry that you guys have 😊 much love/goodwill for the fat lady about town and the small man with enormous hands ❤️🧡💛💚💙
Take care! Y'all are so great at what you do. Your needs are important 🙂
As a years-long stan of the Michael Hobbes extended universe, the semaglutide main-feed and bonus eps are super lame. You're going to keep producing paid content, the content where you do less research and complain to your listeners about being popular and producing something wildly lucrative? We can see the number of Patreon supporters on the show feeds and extrapolate the income. Hire some help. Or fine, be super anal and record and edit every tiny aspect, and have other projects, and just announce a break like an adult. Boy oh boy, as Aubrey would say. I guess I'm in the minority looking at the comments here, but paying for this pity-party (that is full of inaccurate information) really rubbed me the wrong way.
I can see where you're coming from. I just assumed that if the main episodes became less frequent the bonus ones would become more substantive
I can’t read any weight-loss drug coverage anymore. It’s all predicated, with new fervor, on weight loss being good and food+eating/fatness being bad. Even when they’re trying to explore with nuance, such as the emotional complications of being on an appetite suppressant during Thanksgiving, the writer or writer/editor process unfailingly reveals their deep belief that food and eating, particularly eating for pleasure and comfort, are bad, and that being thin is the ultimate good. Of course they do, but it’s gotten so much worse and so much stupider in the last two years. I feel sad, for all the reasons, but also because the thin hope and fat fear of the writer/editor are so naked in these pieces, plus a subtextual relief at not having to pretend at not hating fatness, and not having to pretend fat people have diverse experiences worth reporting. The limits of the writer/editor’s mind are so, so clear. Same as it ever was, I guess. Happy Thanksgiving!
Love you two so much! Take care of yourselves. ❤️🧡💜
There's a GREAT Paleo Pete gag too!
I say! I bet you've been asked A MILLION TIMES but an Australian duo (Kate and Kate - LOVELY humans) from Australia did a FABULOUS webseries called The Katering Show. Every topic in there would make a great bonus episode and you'd both laugh so much.... actually that's all the episode would be. Disregard if you've seen it, features Sarah Wilson the woman FAMOUS fro giving up sugar and banging on about it. Enjoy!
The Body Episode is quite frankly, comedy genius and incorporates paleo, raw food and 5:2 (done by a special guest). Honestly, if you've not seen The Katering Show, it will fast become your favourite thing. I give it 5 gay frogs!
Intervention specialist here: work life balance is so fucking important. We love you and support you and want you to keep making amazing content for a long time. Take care of yourself and like....idk take a vacation or something. Go see the beach before it's swallowed by the boiling oceans of late stage capitalism.
Re Australian pronunciation, they also say ZEBBra instead of ZEEbra and pronounce capsule as capSHULE…
That's because we pronounce "Z" as "Zed" rather than "Zee"
Honestly I would listen to 4 hours of unedited content from you both. Just talk about anything, and I will listen, bc you are hilarious 😂
I love you guys no matter how many more eps you do or don't put out (although I would of course prefer more eps :P)! This has really become a comfort podcast for me because, mostly thanks to you two and your vibe. I'm currently going back and listening to old eps to help get me through the last stretch of work before Thanksgiving!
Same. When I want to be productive I just put on old episodes and let it play.
Have you guys thought about seasons? I love the Normal Gossip podcast and as much as I crave a weekly episode from them, I respect that they take a few months between runs of episodes and they call it seasons. Building in breaks and letting listeners know that we’re going to get 10 weeks of episodes starting up again in X weeks time. As much as I love the YWAMPIBCK universe, my parasocial relationship dictates that I care about you enough to not want to see you burn out ❤️ Also Happy Birthday Aubrey!!
Bittersweet to hear you’re taking a break! Glad to hear you’re taking care of yourselves, but selfishly I’ll miss spending my commutes with you both. Any chance we can get a maintenance phase’s favorite things list? Not even necessarily about wellness fads, but I would love to know what you read/watch/listen to that shapes your world views. I do appreciate your nuanced approach to all topics and would love to experience your influences firsthand.
I would listen the hell out of episodes like that!
I had a very weird visit with my thyroid doc this week. I go every 6 months to monitor levels. This visit, she asked me if I was interested or wanting to know about injectable weight loss medication like Ozempic. I told her I have zero interest in that and she was all “oh good ok!” but then went on to explain that she sees people for obesity as well, and for diabetes, and that if I wanted it, I’d need to do lab work and blah blah. I reinterated that I don’t want it, I’ve read up about it, and if I want to lose weight or get more healthy, I’d do movement and adding veggies. She seemed relieved. She said that its indicated for diabetics or for people with bmi over 33 without any diabetes (but said it’s not indicated for weight loss which is…what?) again I couldn’t tell was she trying to sell me on it or warn me? It was so weird. She said she has people calling her constantly for it now, including people with very low bmis and no diabetes. I kind of feel for her but I have never been offered meds for weight loss before and it felt so weird.
Happy birthday, Aubrey! You are brilliant 🌟
Happy Birthday Aubrey! Thank you for your work :)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the one, the only, Aubrey Gordon!! Aubrey, your work and writing has challenged me and changed my life as a fat queer person trying to live in this world-in-flames. Happy 40th!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AUBREY!!!! This podcast means so much to me. Thank you for everything. The world is better because you are in it!!!
I absolutely want a patreon feedback on feedback. What the dumbest and weirdest feedback on episodes. It cracks me up and infuriates me what people get pissed about.
As someone unemployed who counts on podcasts to keep a sense of days, I'm sad at the prospect of learning new timekeeping. As someone who has been through my own carpal tunnel surgery this year, as well as several others at this point, please take care of yourselves, y'all!
I'm a supporting member here because this podcast is easily one of my favorite podcasts of all time. The content, the research, the quality is all top notch. I often listen to an episode multiple times because it's THAT GOOD. I also realize that it must take SO MUCH TIME and EFFORT to do this. (I ran a little podcast for a bit and it was exhausting). So please please take care of yourselves, have little breaks, and I'd prefer less episodes if it keeps y'all fresh and feisty! Whatever you do, please spend no extra time to look up correct pronunciations of things :)
You guys are amazing. I love your show so so much! I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned, but more importantly how much more I’ve been able to accept myself as I am because of your work! So, while I totally want you both to take care of yourselves, I’m heartbroken at the thought of hearing from you less. Love you and will be here to listen whenever you drop an episode anywhere! ❤️
Shame on Skeptical Inquirer. They need to stay in their lane.
Thank you so much for everything you do, and I support whatever you both need to do to take care of yourselves. The Ozempic episode made me have "big feelings," but I am so grateful to you for doing it. Wishing you all the best as you navigate this time.
Mike's antidepressant/buproprion metaphor for ozempic/weight loss meds felt extremely similar to my experience having an eating disorder and doctors still telling me to focus on "healthy weight loss" . Or any treatment intervention that includes intentional weight loss as an option once a patient is stabilized. It's basically being told once you've stopped using all eating disorder behaviors (and restored your vitals of that's an issue for someone ), " All you have to do is go back to what you were doing at the very beginning of your eating disorder But just don't get triggered! Just don't get triggered, you'll be fine, just don't get triggered! It's fine! This is fine, you'll be fine. See you in 6 months, don't eat too much Halloween candy!"
Semaglutide is exactly what the weight loss industry loves: some results, lots if money, blame the user when they regain. Nothing new.
I appreciate the balance if time and quality. And it's hard to let others in because it's your baby. I work with someone who I just vibe with and its so hard to bring others into it. But sharing the load and bringing more people into the work might be the answer.
Thank you thank you. I loved this bonus ep and the original ep. I love love love the nuanced conversation and research you put into it. As a woman with PCOS, ozempic has been mentioned to me a lot. It’s something I’m still very on the fence about, I haven’t made up my mind on whether (when it’s more readily available or using other similar product) I’ll use it. But this episode was a genuinely comforting episode.
Long time listener, first time commenter, recovering academic. I just saw the Your Fat Friend documentary yesterday at our local film festival. It was an intensely emotional experience for many in the audience. Thank you for your work, your nerdery, your personal and professional risks, your wit and for sharing your vulnerability in such a world-shifting way. As a community based researcher/shit disturber I know exhaustion and burnout and especially how it pushes up against the desire to keep moving the needle on issues of social injustice with the same urgency. You are both amazing. Your community supports you at any pace 🔥
Just wanted to say that I loved the Ozempic episode and am listening to the bonus ep now. Please take care and produce content at a pace that allows you to do so! <3
love the ozempic episode and the bonus
I have a PhD and I know research is hard. I just want to say I would listen to you both just talk about your days. I really enjoy listening to your energy and friendship. I hope you can find a way to still podcast and not burn out. ❤️
There is a book called Brain Energy that I think would be interesting to you. It is written by a psychiatrist on the faculty at Harvard, and posits a link between metabolic health and mental health, and mentions the keto diet. It is heavy on the research so it wouldn’t be an easy episode, but I think it’s worthwhile.
Lollollol listening to the criteria excluded from the Ozempic trial, all the fat crazy addicted AFABS can all just hang out together after this thing blows through society. Looking forward to it, friends, I'll see you at the party.
I'm only in the first five minutes but want to say I'd listen to a 500 min long episode if that's what you're serving. Edit down to what feels right for you but for the love of Goddess don't feel like shorter episodes are what the doctor ordered because most of us would listen to you all day if we could. We love and appreciate your work, your heart, your minds, your selves. Thank you!!
I’m curious why we’re not talking more about the FenPhen-like playbook. Get as much money as you can and create a frenzy until you get halted by causing serious side effects, which are only held to account once there are lawsuits (and there are already at least two lawsuits around stomach paralysis). Excellent as always and loved it, but expected to hear more about the egregiousness at play here.
I had to pause listening to this to say how much I adore and appreciate you both! The information and care that you take means so much to me, and also you are both endlessly fun to listen to. Your laughs make me laugh and truly brighten my day! Your work has deeply changed me for the better
Prediabetic is a made up concept, only in America. In Europe, the threshold for being considered diabetic is at a much higher level of blood sugar. Like BMI, some of this is just scare tactics. I had a doctor send me for a 6 hour glucose tolerance test, and he pointed out that if he only looked at the first hour or so, he would have classified me as diabetic. But after the initial spike, my blood sugar quickly dropped back to normal.
I'd really love to hear your hot hot takes on 'The Witch Trials of JK Rowling' podcast. I'm just finishing it, and whilst I still fundamentally disagree with JKR's views, I was attracted to her views on the binary nature of cultural and societal change... would love to hear you guys tear it up for us!
Guysss please hire an intern. I'm deeply under qualified and also weirdly over qualified, pick me!
Hi Michael & Aubrey! 👋 I’m from Australia and am a massive fan! I just listened to a fabulous podcast episode that talked about eating disorders, and touched on many themes that you cover! It’s excellent and I highly recommend it - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/psychiatry-psychotherapy-podcast/id1335892956?i=1000633616930 It was so refreshing to hear a medical doctor talking about stigma, bias, privilege and health at every size! ❤️ Keep up your amazing work!!! xx
I'm also from Australia. it's kind of funny how many Aussies listened
Here to suggest a bonus episode about the cancelled wedding speech 😏
I really love your podcast so much. I've always struggled with eating disorders and it's embarrassing to admit but I first started listening to this podcast because I thought it was diet advice (because of the title maintenance phase). But I'm so glad it wasn't and because of your podcast I've learned so much and been able to work on some of my disordered eating issues. I really value the quality of the research you both present, as well as your analysis and opinions. I hope you can rest and take care because you and your work is truly valued.
Please take all the time you need and go enjoy life! You both give the world so much so like go and be and know we 😘
I'd much rather have fewer episodes that you guys are really stoked on than more episodes that grind you guys down!
I was recently at Kripalu (a wellness retreat in Massachusetts) and when I saw both of Aubrey’s books for sale in the bookstore I squealed as if Aubrey herself was standing there. This show, and both of you (along with Sarah Marshall and Alex Steed) have changed my life for the better and made me think in new, more empathetic and critical ways. Thank you and enjoy your break!!!
If your budget allows it, it would be awesome if you could have a crew help you out with all that research
Or help with other aspects of the show.
I really would love more content that’s chill and doesn’t require loads of research. Maybe just keep the high-research episodes to a minimum to preserve your energy?
Yes!!! My thoughts exactly!!!
Echoing the chorus - Please take care of yourselves. I’m so grateful for the rigour and empathy with which you approach all subject matter. I’m happy to listen to episodes as they’re ready, regardless of when it is.
I love listening to the two of you shoot the shit about Gwyneth's sex show or whatever. I would have no complaints if that was your podcast! (My favorite ep ever was Angela Lansbury but this is because she was a national treasure.)
Holy shit. Just listened to this and the Ozempic episode and yesterday the Star Tribune publishes this perfect Mike and Aubrey article from the Chicago Tribune:https://www.startribune.com/is-junk-food-headed-for-the-ash-heap-of-history/600316549/ Question mark in the headline for the win. Thanks for helping raise our critical thinking quotients! So appreciate your work - whenever you feel like doing it.
The idea that these drugs would "change" how we think about fat/thin people totally comes back to something I really learned from this show--people see people who are not fat as having "earned" it through discipline and intelligence and they see fat people as stupid, lazy, and out of control. Now those same people worry that "undeserving" fat people will be able to masquerade as thin people and get away with it, and the rest of us won't be able to make value judgments based on their bodies any more.
Very happy to endorse a break for you both whenever you want and need! <3
Aubrey's writing another book!!!??? I am so excited! And just echoing everyone else, you all deserve your health and your time and we will be here supporting you no matter what! This podcast and work is so important that taking breaks so you can continue it in the long run is absolutely vital.
Take a break! I'm sure we'll manage until January. I enjoy the fact that Maintenance Phase (and If Books Could Kill) is so well researched and fact checked.
i neeeed aubrey’s review of yellowjackets please
so supportive of any breaks that allow this podcast to continue at the quality it has always had. y'all have changed my life so drastically. much love
I hope this place is (the best kind of) echo chamber of hope, love, positivity and support for the both of you and your amazing work. Your podcast has changed my life for the better. Thank you much
We love you guys and you should definitely take breaks!! I am constantly in awe of the rigorous research and schedule of your shows. I've listened to all of them probably 4 times and I learn something new and enjoy them each time. Might say something about my memory ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Protect Aubrey and Mike at all costs! Including Patreon ❤️ your back catalogue is robust and I love to re-listen! Happy Birthday Aubrey and happy wedding Peter (is his present to his wife … putting up the shelf?)!
This Canadian LOVES your pronunciation of Toronto. ♡♡
Just one of a million people saying I love everything you do came from YWA and now IBCK then bought Aubrey’s books. So what you can when you can and know that I am forever grateful that you reject individual solutions for systemic problems which is the wellness industry all over. And I need a This Shit is Exhausting T-shirt. Much love from a Brit in Hong Kong who would never be so rude as to ‘correct’ your pronunciation. 💜💜💜
Seriously can’t tell you how much I love your show, I relisten frequently and think of you all often as I’m encountering different stigmas and anti-fat bias around my world. Take care of yourselves and know how much you’re appreciated!
Take care of yourselves folks! Thanks for the heads up
Hi just want to add my 2 cents which is that for me, one MP episode (and IBCK) is the equivalent of like 4 other podcast episodes!. I listen multiple times and get new things out of each re listen because they are so densely packed with information. Enjoy your break and I will happily be relistening to all the Pete Evans episodes until you’re back 🙂
Echoing so many others that I’ll continue to appreciate and love everything you create and continue to support you regardless of when you put episodes out. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
As a non-Aussie living in Australia, I feel you Aubrey on the Emu pronunciation! Actually cackled at that one 🤣... Take care of yourselves guys, we'll be here to listen to you whenever you feel like releasing an episode! Tons of previous ones to re-listen to to stay entertained and informed 🙂
Not me saying "These are not serious people" to myself about these journos quoting you out of context moments before you shout out Brian Cox. Love you guys, take care, go easy. I can't wait for this new book!
I'm fine paying for whatever you put out when you are able. I know it's a lot of work!
The show will stop being fun if y’all stop having fun doing it. Despite the seriousness of the topics at times, “fun” is really your brand. Do what you gotta do to keep your spark. P.S. The Ozempic show was really well done. The topic was covered better than any place else I’ve experienced. Kudos.
Me and my family have been listening since the beginning and I would just like to say any content from you is appreciated no matter how long it takes. You are one of the best reasearched podcasts out there and there’s no reason to compromise your integrity for our sake.
Regarding carpal tunnel: I wasted decades of my life using bands, tape, ice, braces, you name it. Carpal Tunnel Surgery is soooooo worth it and the recovery is not bad at all. I had both of my hands done about six months apart and my only regret is that I didn’t do it 20 years earlier.
The last 10 min of my episode was blank… anyone else? 😬 love you guys!
First of all, y’all are both treasures. Secondly, if you put out episodes annually or just read your inbox to us or just talked about what you did over the weekend I would still listen and subscribe to this Patreon. You have given us so much already. Take care of yourselves- we will be here!
PROTECT AUBREY & MIKE AT ALL COSTS!! This podcast is a public service, a force for good and a gift to the universe. But so are the two of you. I can only imagine the emotional toll that these episodes take on you. Please do what you need to do to in order to maintain your physical & mental well being and your general happiness. We will be here to devour your main feed & Patreon episodes whenever you are able to gift them us. One thing to consider that I’ve seen other podcasts do… Maybe if there are release weeks when you feel you’re not ready to do a full episode, maybe do some listener mailbag type mini episodes. Or maybe just spend 30 mins talking about something related that uplifted you - maybe there’s a good book that was just published that you wanna talk about. Or maybe Dr. Oz said something impossibly stupid and you read hilarious posts about it. They could be little snack size episodes that don’t require a lot of research. Love you both! 🖤🖤
I love the podcast and I always want new episodes but I want both of you too take care of yourselves more! I think maybe switching to a season schedule where you have planned breaks to recharge and get caught up or do more silly episodes, or consider having a research assistant- I personally would love the job! Whatever you decide is best for you, take care of yourselves!
I got SO many targeted instagram ads for that WSJ “it’s economically beneficial for women to be thin” article 🤮
FYI, I'm up for an episode that's an hour and 45 minutes long. As much of you as I can get.
Same!
I find it interesting that the snack companies believe decreased sales are due to semaglutide meds & not the fact that they have nearly doubled the price of their products. My threshold for buying chips is $3, so I don't buy them anymore.
And I am sure someone is making 6 figures to try to figure it out but can't cuz their heads too far up their butt
I would listen on any schedule you choose. Every other month? I’m there. Three month vacation? I’ll be here when you get back. For bonuses, I love the journey through Aubrey’s bookshelf so much. Or just you two talking things out, like here. Burnout is bad. Please avoid it!
Any one else get the feeling they were about to be dumped? Just me?
Thank you for this episode, and the previous on Ozempic. They were both extraordinary. You need a break, and to thank and help you both as you contemplate your next steps, I have upgraded my membership.
we love u, take care of yourselves and give yourselves an abundance of space and time! ❤️
Sometimes I need a little self care after listening to an episode, I can only imagine making it. That being said I will happily wait for good content. This podcast has changed my life and how I see myself as a fat person. Your podcast has been so empowering to me personally and I appreciate all your hard work. Much love!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Can I volunteer to be your research assistant????
Same!!!!
You two are just amazing. Thank you so much for taking the time and care to produce well researched episodes. I am delighted every time a new episode is released, and have listened to each episode at least three times. You do such amazing work, and we are all grateful for it. Take all the time you need to take care of yourselves and rest up!!
Agreed with folks that we don’t want you burned out and unhealthy. Perhaps an research assistant would take some of that pressure off you? I know I am others would pay for research assistant level :) also I am on wegovey (very positive experience) and wanted to tell you that I enjoyed the episode and didn’t feel it was unfair or negative about my choice. I thought it was the best reporting I heave heard or read so far.
Yeah I was thinking this too - hire on a research assistant or two!
Tell us what a Vitamin D truther is you cowards. Release the Gordon cut
Truly appreciate your honesty here. Please take care of yourself as that's the most important thing. If you're looking for bonus episodes to do where you don't have to read any articles or click any DOI links, I loved your bachelor episode and NGO episode....whatever makes you guys happy and doesn't burn you out!
Really agree with what people are saying here! The show is not worth your health. As someone who works in podcasting and has made independent shows before, it is a ton of work! Seasons or a looser release schedule gives you the time you need to breathe!! Also just to say that if mike's carpal tunnel continues I would totally help with editing for free ahha.
Another voice in the chorus saying: Please take care of yourselves, and create a pace that’s manageable for the long haul. I speak from bitter experience (no, not butter experience, thank you autocomplete). I pushed myself too hard for too long and burned out HARD, it took years to get the spark lit again. We want you around for a while.
Also I love your diet book dunking! Not every episode has to be heavy.
I started to listen to this recovering from stress migraine I got for trying to do too much for a thing I love and this is the perfect discussion for my mood. I hope you can figure out a schedule that isn’t like a house of cards that gets knocked over from breathing on it. This show is very important to me but I’d rather have like two episodes a year than know you are burning out trying to do impossible quality with impossible speed. Take care ❤️
As an Australian I love how Americans say emu! I say it like all the time because it amuses me haha. Michael is right though, some words are weird when you try to say them in a different accent. Like when Americans pronounce Melbourne how we say it. I'm impressed that they get it right, but it also sounds strange! Anyway, love you guys and please take breaks when you need them :)
i get stressed out over the noxious bullshit y'all have to debunk just listening to this, so i can just about imagine the stress y'all have from having to research, refute, and talk about it. please take care of yourselves, and take as much time as you need. also, on a personal note, your work is part of the reason i decided to go back to school and study pharmacology, so, really, thank you for all you do.
Please take all the time you need for yourselves. But can we please still to a Grifties at some point
I feel like I want to be the water boy for the show and bring you your towels and Gatorade. We appreciate you both so very much. You have inspired so much action and I cannot express how impactful your hard work is. There aren’t just fruits of your labor there are fruit trees of your labor that will continue to move fat issues forward at a stellar pace. Thank you. 😁🙏❤️
This podcast -not the episode the whole process 😅-(and YWA) has provided so many clap backs and information dumps for me to challenge my Uni with (I started Otago Uni in July and I have *feelings* about the institutional fatphobia- the infamous jaw wiring BS for example). My population health exam was the first one in 4 years (we had prior years to practice with) that didn't include some "Ob*sity" question --- I had prepared myself to write a mini essay instead of the short answer if it came up. I want to claim its because I gave a lot of pertinent feedback, it's probably just luck but I'll take it 😅
Guys, as your dedicated listeners, we would listen to you describe paint trying and probably learn a ton from it. There’s no pressure to pump out tons of bonus episodes. I’d honestly love to hear Mike bitch about bike lanes for a full unedited episode.
I would listen to them just talk shit about each individual book within Aubreys diet book collection, or any random trend stuff that comes up. And the upcoming Grifties!!
Your health and well-being is what truly matters. Thank you for sharing so much of yourselves and please please please do what you need to do to restore balance to your lives.
also, I hear celery juice is great for burnout…
someone else said seasons and i love that idea! also if you feel like you need to fill in the space during gaps you could also do rereleases of old episodes :) i’m also so down to hear y’all talk about other stuff like yummy recipes or hobbies or anything else you’re excited about and want to share with the world! ❤️
Mike and Aubrey, please take a vacation! I can relisten to the back catalogue until 2024 so that you both can have a well-earned vacation. And then come back with a sustainable plan. Maybe skip an episode release every four months, or take a whole month off twice a year? Or heck, delare summer re-runs time, old school television style. Whatever feels healthy for you.
My chest literally tightening as I thought you were about to say the podcast is over!! But seriously, setting boundaries is so important - good work. Although I'm not sure I could go on without this podcast!
All I have to say is Thank You. Aubrey's breathless laughing is a treasure beyond price, and Michael's responses to...well, a lot of things.... is also without peer. I have recently been released from Food Prison aka ED Treatment and I had Rehab Revelations, one being that I have to change my life or I will die, and rest is a priority. Also I am an anorexic in a fat body and Aubrey your voice is my empowering voice and I call my ED voice Jillian. I say STFU JILLIAN WE GOT AUBREY UP IN HERE!!! Anyway. You alls wellbeing before anything!!!
in case lyrical therapy helps with validation - “need a break” by canadian singer-songwriter david myles: https://youtu.be/mV1XcLA6DC8?si=lU2bL1ntwFqMTD9K
Sending all my love and support! Please take any time you need and take care of yourselves! Thank you so so much for everything that you do but please do get some rest!
One of my mums takes ozempic because she has type two diabetes and it’s really great to be able to learn more about it. This has really helped me understand it better ❤️
Have you considered seasons? A few podcasts I really enjoy do that as a way to ensure breaks
Could you maybe just do an episode where Mike tells the story of that wedding speech?
Hear hear 👏
First I want to say, it okay to take a break. Don’t burn out. Seriously take December completely off even from Patreon! Second about this episode….this weekend I was hate watching a show on Friday night and one of the panelists (who is a regular tool) stated that this class of drugs would be bigger than AI, which told me two things: A) thinks these drugs can do more than they actually can “cure obesity” and B) doesn’t understand how big AI is (including how jobs it will replace. )
I heae ya. I honestly don't remember now when I *wasn't* tired...I'm doing a serious think about how I can find a better balance in my own life right now, too. Take care of yourselves!
On behalf of my country I want to apologise for the pronunciation spam. Australia has a deep inferiority complex which manifests in strange ways sometimes. Keep saying emoo, but if everyone could stop saying koala bears that’d be great.
I was just thinking about you all today. I work at a GI office and we actually have changed our policies in regards to Trulicity and Ozempic. I'll ask them tomorrow about why, but seeing them labeled as weight loss drugs just made me groan so hard. I really appreciate you all just validating a lot of weird feelings I've had about the whole thing. I would rather the podcast just take its time with episodes. I hope Michael recovers well from the carpal tunnel!
Aubrey as a Torontoian I did notice your pronouciation of Toronno and went ohhhhh she must have been here!
Aubrey’s laugh brings me much joy
Love you both ❤️
I hope Michael Hobbs gets carpal tunnel surgery. I lost feeling in both hands and that surgery was a god sent. It was the only thing that fix my hands
Same thing with my old co-worker. He said the surgery made a drastic difference for him
I love your podcast and totally get why you would need a break. Take care of yourselves❤️. Have you considered delegating some work and hiring people to help (research assistant, fact checker, producer, audio engineer, etc)? I think a lot of the podcasts with frequent release schedules have a whole team working behind the scenes. That could be an option if doing it alone is unsustainable.
Thank you for your consistent time and dedication that you both put into this podcast. Take whatever time and measures you need to make sure you both are healthy; your faithful audience will still be here for whenever you get back. Also: on the pronunciation thing, as long as people are able to parse and understand what you're saying, I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as people can parse what you're saying, the goal of language has been met.
Take care of yourselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please take time for self care 🖤 We love you both and nothing is going to change the fact that you both are our parasocial besties 😂🖤🖤
For what it's worth, while I crave more of your episodes, I would rather you take the time you need to finish them. Or take breaks as needed etc. You're both freaking awesome, thank you for being you.
Love you two, I’m glad you’re both taking time to figure out a workload and schedule that works better for you. Also really refreshed to hear your take on the whole ozempic situation. I’m a big hockey fan and I swear every ad break here in Canada is for one of the new drugs, interestingly they barely ever explicitly say what the drug actually does. Just to ask your doctor about it. Bizarre and gross.
There are really specific limitations around drug advertising in Canada. Companies are allowed to state the name, price and quantity of a specific drug but not what it treats; or they can state a disease/condition but not name any specific drugs used to treat the disease/condition. The Ozempic ads state the name but can’t say what it’s for, which is why we only get “ask your doctor.” It might actually make for an interesting episode to compare drug marketing rules in different countries, because even between Canada and the US the rules are vastly different.
Y'all are the only podcast that I know of that is this rigorous & releases continuously instead of in seasons. You spoil your listeners and we appreciate it but your well-being is far more important!
Please take care of yourselves! We have enough episodes to hold us over to 2024! I have enjoyed all the episodes (including Worm Wars).
Agree! And I also enjoyed Worm Wars!
Quality over quantity. Always appreciate you both!
Just wanted to say that I so appreciated your Ozempic/Semiglutide episode, and (at least for me!) you really threaded the needle perfectly as far as being non-judgy, even empathetic, towards people taking the drug while being your good old critical and snarky selves regarding the discourse and the pharma-ganda surrounding it. I'm sorry it was so stressful for you! But thank you sooo much for the effort.
Loved this look behind the scenes! Two things: 1. Absolutely take care of yourself first! Don’t burn out on creating content like so many have before you - please slow down and take your time 2. I’d love to get some bonus content with bits of episodes that get left on the cutting room floor. Why let all that work go to waste?
I was so interested in your thoughts on the “taking the easy way out” phenomenon. I mean, you would think that if weight loss was REALLY about health, “Ozempic face” would be a triumph. Loose skin should be a triumph, but it’s not. I’ve lost 130 lbs in the last three years and the feeling of being told that I’ve ruined my body by ever being fat has been a much bigger physical and emotional obstacle than I ever though it would be. Yes there’s surgery, but like, why isn’t weight loss by itself enough for the common discourse…unless it’s not about the weight and it’s all about random stuff being used as a way to artificially create an in-group of “morally superior” people that the rest of us are supposed to try our hardest to be like. Nah, couldn’t be that. Honestly, I am grateful for any content I get from y’all. I much prefer quality over quantity.
Please take care of yourselves, that’s the most important thing! Thanks for all you do.
This podcast has been so important to me as a fat person and I am so happy it exists at all. I would love to get fewer, better episodes but if you stopped I am so grateful for what you’ve already done. Feel better soon!
thank you for doing this. my husband is diabetic and he was surprised and happy to overhear both this and the ozempic episode, because y’all mention diabetics at all, much less carefully. he was prescribed one of these drugs, couldn’t get it due to shortage, was prescribed a secondary precursor drug, couldn’t get that either. at this point, he literally can’t get the drugs, and we have no expectation of any further useful data about these drugs anymore for diabetics because the conversation is all about the weight loss and it’s all ableist, anti-fat hype.
As someone who crashed and burned about a year ago and still doesn’t have (and isn’t sure I can even hold down) a full time job, do what you gotta do!!
Same! Good luck and take care of yourself Lindsey
Honestly I have zero idea when any of the podcasts I listen to update.. half of them do “seasons” where they’ll update regularly for a bit then disappear for half a year. I just look at the podcast app and see what’s new and listen to it. Would much rather have less frequent episodes and maintain the quality (and Mike and Aubrey’s sanity!) The other work they do is equally important to this show, as much as we all love maintenance phase, you gotta have balance. I’ll just keep listening and supporting whatever work we’re lucky enough to receive! Excited for Aubrey’s next book!
You two are the best. I am so glad you are taking time to slow it down and focus on life. You are doing beautiful work. Also, your pronunciations are wonderful. All of them.
I agree with others that releasing episodes less frequently is just fine! Taking care of yourselves is so important. If you want to still release Patreon episodes, answering listeners questions or venting just like this one is still meaningful and encouraging! Also, Mike, my wife had carpal tunnel surgery and it was amazing. I’m not sure if you have access, resources, or if it is an option for your body for that but it can help so much. She was hesitant because the success rate didn’t seem high and recovery sucks but it’s been a huge help. ❤️
So the thing with Adele is that she was a role model for those of us who aren't skinny celebrity body material. It was so sad to see that we have one fewer awesome large person. Regarding the "women make more money if they're thin" article -- it was saying that it was *optimal* to be thinner for your career, which is true because people are judgmental and reward conventional prettiness. Not that it was *your moral task* to be thinner.
Love that you acknowledge how draining this work can be and based on all the comments here, we all want you to take care of yourselves, please! Y’all are fantastic.
Ditto to all who say “take care of yourselves”! I’ll continue to support you with a less frequent release schedule and/or a long break!
I would love an episode with you guys just ranting about ridiculous comments you receive!
I just want you two to do whatever you need to do to keep making episodes. Maintenance Phase is the absolute top of my list of new episodes I look forward to. I'd rather wait longer and not have you two burn out than have it go away because you worked too hard. Thank you!
Absolutely wonderful episode and I loved the peek behind the scenes. I'm glad you're taking time to prioritize yourselves. I love what you make and how much care you put into it and will continue to be a loyal listener and subscriber regardless of any posting schedule changes. I hope all goes well for you both for the rest of the year!
I'll add my voice to the chorus saying to please take breaks and work at a sustainable pace for you.
Please take care of yourselves! Thanks so much for the Ozempic episode. I've been having some health issues, and my doctor (who I really do like and trust) wanted to put me on it. It was really disheartening that the only reason she wanted to put me on it was so I could lose weight (diabetes runs in my family, but I'm not pre-diabetic). I trust and will listen to my doctor, but listening to you two talk about it helped me push with my doctor to explore other options first. Thanks again, I really appreciate the research that you do!
I thought someone was moving to another downtown hotel for a minute there 🥲
Big hugs. I can hear the tired and the hurt in both your voices. I love your show but I would rather fewer episodes with more spacing and you both not burning out!
With all the work you guys do I would highly encourage delegting and hiring freelancers or someone that you trust to yet with the research and editing parts of the podcast. I have experience as an editor for youtubers and podcasts and would love the opportunity to volunteer my time to you guys and I am sure there are other people in the community who would be appropriate as well for any role that you possibly hire for
Thank you for making these episodes. I’ve been feeling so uncomfortable these past few months as my friends and Family members around me take ozempic and I’ve been unable to articulate my discomfort. It is their choice and I believe in body autonomy is important but this episode was so validating to me experience in my own body. Your break also gave me the chance to listen to the audiobook your body’s not an apology by Sonya Renee Taylor.
Thank you for your content as I work through my own healing journey ❤️🩹
I’m going to raise my donation! Hire assistants please. Don’t die! Take breaks! I’m sure my $5 will absolutely solve all your problems but I feel badly & this is all I can do. Take my money!
Also, accept no shit re: pronunciation from British people - the source of the spelling and pronunciation of Worcestershire!!!
Soo funny because I am also subscribed to If Books and I did actually have a quick moment where I thought "Huh, there hasn't been a If Books episode for awhile they must be busy this month." It absolutely did not occur to me that it might have something to do with the Ozempic episode. Ultimately I am fine to wait for either show as the quality for both of them are just unmatched so no complaints here.
I have seen the WILDEST discourse about semaglutide and it’s been so raw and exhausting and I know it’s not over. I’m so glad you’re here as kind people to sort out the hateful garbage from facts. That stays true if you’re making less.
Two things: 1. I've always heard it pronounced Gee-la Monster, even at zoos. 2. Whatever you need to do to take care of yourselves, do it. You're a gift, and we want you to be happy and healthy!
It's Gila( hee luh)monster the name is Spanish and they are banned after the Gila River where they are mostly found. Although they are all over Az, New Mexico, and southern parts of Cali.
How could Halloween get any better you ask? A Maintenance Phase bonus drop, that’s how! Thanks y’all! Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻
Omg. As someone with Narcolepsy, I related so hard to the idea of considering falling asleep a moral failing. When all you do is sleep, and can’t get stuff done, you feel like a failure. Also, another thing I related to: so many people have told me exercising will wake me up, which…no. You can’t exercise if you can’t wake up or get up the energy to eat! I need medicine that changes my body’s chemistry, and if I stopped it I would immediately go back to being unable to function.
I was so hurt and frustrated by how much of an asshole Scott Galloway on Pivot was about Ozempic that I quit listening. I welcome having the time back and am fine not filling out with y'all if that helps with longevity.
First I will RAISE my donation if you take some time off and/or release episodes less frequently, just to show how much I support you both taking care of yourselves. You come first! Second, thank you for sharing all this additional information and also what it's like to put together a podcast. I knew you both did a lot of research but I had no idea it was that much! But the end result is that you always tied medial, cultural and medai threads together in a crstyal clear way.
The lighter release schedule has actually provided the perfect opportunity to go back and relisten to old episodes of this show and You’re Wrong About and catch all of the references Mike has made to books that are now If Books Could Kill episodes. Truly coming full circle on the Michael Hobbes multiverse.
I hate thinking that making the show is stressful for y’all when it brings so much joy to your audience. Please take all the time you need. Take care of yourselves! 🧡
I just want to say thank you so much for doing the Ozempic episode, I'm sorry it was so difficult and so stressful for you to do, but I really appreciate you doing it. Seeing people talking so much about this was really stressing me out and it's helpful to have something to come back to when I'm feeling stressed about it. I echo everybody else in that I want you to be able to do your work in a sustainable way! I really love and appreciate your episodes, and I'll be happy for whatever we get, but I don't want that to come at the expense of your well-being. I also want to say that I do find even the less research-heavy episodes to be very helpful and I appreciate them a lot even if it's just dunking on some bad diet book no one's ever heard of, or talking about crappy fad diets in rapid-fire. It still makes me smile, and I find it helpful to come back to those types of episodes when I'm starting to feel eating disorder stuff coming back to me, it just helps to keep the diet culture at bay I guess. So, thank you!
here for the grunting and groaning + now i can’t stop thinking about yall saying “this is exhausting, like we are never talking about ozempic - like ever” (a la taylor swifts song 22) 😂😘🩷
CHILL OUT STOP DOING THINGS DO NOTHING. We’ll be here when you get back
👆🏻this - what they said!!!
I am fully prepared to defer any instant gratification knowing that you both have taken a decent break and come back rested. Your content is so fabulously prepared everything, not a single episode has ever disappointed. I can't imagine the amount of time and hard work which goes into each show..you definitely deserve the time off. It will be worth the wait!
I am just a totally random person, but I lean heavily towards the side of taking a scheduled break to relax and slowly prep and then coming back to a regular schedule in shorter seasons! As a listener, the irregular schedule can be more frustrating than knowing in advance that a break is happening. Like, I’d always rather know that I should find something else for the next few months than check every Tuesday and be slightly disappointed. But like, this is all low stakes and there’s no wrong choice, of course.
I did laugh out loud on the bus listening to the ozempic episode when Aubrey reassured Michael that Maintenance Phase is a safe space for creative pronunciation, immediately followed by "geela monster". thank you Michael for reminding us of that lil gem.
curious if with the intentional slowdown in content, would yall consider implementing a $1 tier for folks to continue to accessibly support yall during this time?
It is already possible to donate $1 a month regardless of preset tier level options! Just sharing in case others don't know. I do it for a few different creators.
Until I heard ozempic part one, I thought gila monsters were made up. I don't know where I got that, but I thought they were a cryptid of some kind. Thanks for educating me on biases and also zoology haha. Take care of yourselves.
I just needed to leave a comment about when I studied a abroad in New Zealand (in 2011!), I once ordered a chicken “fillet”. The woman scoffed at me and said “you mean ‘fil-IT’” with a hard t and I will never forget my shock and dismay.
I lived in the UK for six years and it never failed to amuse me how the English have VERY strong opinions about pronunciation, but weirdly these opinions extend to *other languages*. Like, I was trying to tell this excellent dad joke my (Canadian) father passed on: Why do chicken coops have two doors? Because if they had four they'd be chicken sedans! My English colleagues looked at me blankly while I was cracking up and one said, dead seriously, "It's pronounced coup-AY"
In the future if some brit gives you shit about how you pronounce herb you can tell them to fuck off because it's a word stolen from old French that originally had a silent h. It's actually the Brits who started pronouncing the h in the 19th century.
Until I started listening to US podcasts I had no idea you guys pronounced it ‘erbs’ and it still sounds very weird to me, give us time to adjust please
ozempic episode part 2! thanks for the update! hope you both get some time to rest & recuperate 💞
Yay for collectively groping our way forward to better work/life balance!! That's when you can actually enjoy both, right? 😄 Thanks for sharing your feels and rants -- here for any and all you do.
Aubrey is a Yellowjackets fan?!? I was dead-ass [redacted] post meat shed makeover for Halloween this year 🐝⚽️👂 PS please take all the time you need!!
I know people can be dismissive of teachers, students, and academics "getting summers off" but knowledge work - thinking, reaserching, synthesizing, presenting - is genuinely exhausting and you need time to recharge and produce good work. I don't see any reason why a podcast like this shouldn't have "seasons" like a TV show does, with regar months/weeks off in between. We love you guys and want this career to be sustainable for you. You not only deserve time off, you NEED it. Everyone does.
This!! I came here to suggest implementing “seasons” to help create a predictable episode release schedule with built in time off. Other podcasts do this and release occasional check ins or updates in their off-season. The Gimlet podcast ‘Heavyweight’ is a good example of this.
I've been wanting to suggest that you guys move to a "season of episodes" model for a while. I haven't because I've felt like it's a totally selfish suggestion - as a person of anxiety (a POA, as Peter Shamshiri might put it), I really just want to know when the next episode will be out, and I hate. not. knowing. Even if the next batch of episodes won't be out for 6 months, at least I'd know. But maybe it would help you guys take breaks and not grind yourselves into dust? anyway, I support you no matter what you choose to do because you are the best <3
Yes - especially as a Patreon subscriber, I pay for not only the extra content, but also to help you guys put out regular episodes. Times are tough and if I knew an episode wasn't going to be put out for x amount of time, I'd really need to take a look at where my money is going and pivot accordingly. Love you guys and your content so much, but I know I can't be the only one who feels this way.
I remain grateful for Maintenance Phase and your work individually. It’s not overstating to say you’ve made me a better listener, and the episodes are worth relistening to in a way that many news sources aren’t. Thanks so much.
I recently did a re-listen of their earliest episodes and I was shocked at how much I had forgotten from my initial listens. Huge +1 to the value of repeated listening!
This podcast is so critical—y’all please take the time you need to have lives outside work as well as give us this great content that never fails to both inform and entertain.
So, this is very unlike me to comment because I dread internet criticism to a disruptive degree, but the cat was up screaming at 4 am and now so am I. I would like to join the legions saying, “take care of yourselves! Come back whenever!” I also hate when people tell me how to do my job, and hypocrisy, and with that spirit, maybe less research-heavy episodes such as more taste tests, movie reviews, cookbook dives? Trying products advertised to you on Instagram, cooking a new recipe, books you actually like, top ten headlines that end in a question mark? Thank you for all you do!
This, all of this. I personally find those types of episodes to be my favorite and the reason I fell in love with this podcast. I can't tell you how many times I've re-listened to your taste tests, cookbook episodes, and your episodes about of-the-time terrible diets. They're so fun and relatively low-stakes in terms of criticism, etc. I hope you guys find joy in doing this podcast again.
#TeamMikeAndAubreyHire-a-ReasearchAssistant
I just really want this for you
Mike you do an amazing job editing but omfg please hire an editor 😭 also Aubrey’s pronunciation of Emu and Gila monster are amazing and I want to hear it all the time every day
Seriously. I've been shook at how long he's gone editing 2 podcasts considering how time intensive media editing is. Also agree on Aubrey's pronunciation, but also a special shout-out to how Mike says "zoo book". I love it so much.
It's totally okay to take your work slow to keep yourselves sane! Whenever a podcaster I listen to does that I think "Good, you should prioritize yourself! My lack of boredom for an hour isn't worth running yourself ragged for."
I'd rather have 4 great episodes a year than 12 episodes that are killing you to make. Do what you need to do! Your fans support you, no matter what.
We love you, please take rest, you are helping other people so so so much!!! SO MUCH LOVE!!!
Something I never hear in any media about the "obesity epidemic," particularly when it's taken for granted that obesity IS the illness/cause of illness is that for many people like myself, illness is the cause of obesity. My doctor prescribed Ozempic because she felt it was the best option to keep me from moving from prediabetes into Type 2 without screwing with ALL my other medications, many of which have weight gain as a side effect. I took it for a few months, it worked well, and then my insurance company narrowed their coverage so it wasn't covered for prediabetes. So now I'm not just judged for being fat, I'm judged for being fat and not taking a medication that my insurance won't cover for a legitimate medical purpose. But the bottom line is, at this point my chronic illness means that every weight-loss method is completely off the table as an option, and I'm judged for it anyway.
I am so sorry you are going through all that. It sounds really rough.
Thank you so much!!
People in comments who had issues playing this on Android Patreon app: signing out and signing back in helped.
Your work is amazing & so are boundaries. Thank you for your thoughtfulness about the show AND about yourselves. Please take care and I'll queue up my re-listenables!
Thank you both for all you do! I hope this new schedule, whatever it turns out to be, gives you both some quality rest and sustainable balance❤️
Thanks for making this available. Appreciate how difficult your workloads are. Self care is where it’s at. We will be here.
Your episodes bring me a huge amount of joy and I love them, but I would hate - absolutely hate!! - to have more of them if they were causing you harm.
Adding to the chorus here: your health absolutely comes first & we want you to be in the best possible place! Totally get the emotional toll of these types of episodes. Sending you big supportive vibes & hugs if you want them (:
Thank you for all your hard work and consideration!
So happy that you are both prioritizing your health and well-being, and I can’t wait to pre-order your next book Aubrey! (PS- can I Google vitamin D truther 😂)
🤣
y’all are the best and please take all the time you need!!! ❤️🫶💕💘💞❤️🔥
As a Torontoian, I thank you for getting “Toronno” right! ❤️
I thought the same thing!! Lol
I personally would listen to an hour of you both complaining about the negative/nit picking feedback you receive... 😆
This one isn’t showing up in my podcast app feed!
I am only a few minutes into the pod so far but I wanted to come here directly and say that I fully support you slowing the pace of the pod for your own sanity! I will be here whenever the next ep drops! Take care of yourselves. I'm currently dealing with my own repetitive stress injury (torn tendon in my hand, and I make pottery), so I very much empathize with attempting to continue your work with limited use of your hands!
I am amazed that this is a podcast by two homosexual people that have not seen Rupaul's Drag Race All Stars 2.
FYI the audio is playing on the web, just not the app
it just started working for me
For what it is worth: your supporters love the show, and we all have a huge amount of respect and gratitude for you both and the incredible work you do on the main feed episodes and the bonus content, but we'll all be here, the work will be here, and we *all* benefit if you're doing what you're doing at a sustainable pace! So as a devoted listener, please take the breaks / go at the speed you need! <3
I can't access this recording on the app in android. There's a play button, but it just takes me to the text post - no player showing.
Eeeyyyyyy - thank you for fixing it! 💖
I loved the Ozempic episode so much, and it was released the same day I was speaking with a client about their new GLP-1 agonist study (I work in clinical research)! It’s such an exciting class of drug, this particular study is looking at the potential for use in liver disease. Thank you for all that you do
I can’t access this episode here or on Apple Podcasts?
Same!
FWIW I appreciate it when podcasters take a break - first and foremost it's just humane and sets a great example for others! and also it helps to sustain the core of what makes the podcast great, it helps me catch up on my listening, and it challenges the grind culture that seems to infuse content creation.
Omfg I just need to add that the “Emu” pronunciation discourse is fucking hilarious as an Australian 😂
And apparently Canadians pronounce it more like Aussies, but then we drop the ‘h’ in herbs, so we’re all over the place!
Is there something wrong with patreon that i can't see or access this bonus episode?
from the MP patreon page and the email it LOOKS like there's an embed, but on the post itself there's nothing, it's really weird!
My heart sunk when you said you’d be taking a break. Because honestly these podcasts are a mental health treat to me. That said, I’m so glad you’re both prioritising your own well-being! Your episodes are something so special to me because of how well researched and considerate they are. So thank you for all you do, including taking care. (I’m also very glad to be a Patreon supporter) As an Aussie living in the UK, I would love a rant on pronunciation! Emu is one I find myself annoyed at and marrying plurals but, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter! If we understand each other, then language works! So you emu away 🧡
You two and your podcast brings me so much joy! If you end up taking an early holiday break to recharge for a few months I’ll just keep listening to your old episodes 😊 (my Spotify wrapped this year will just be “oh you spent as many hours as humanly possible listening to MP? cool”). I’m glad you get to have a rant after the semaglutide/Ozempic episode (which of course I enjoyed!). Just for regular people (meaning without a platform/average consumer I guess?) the discourse around it is A LOT, so I can only imagine how exhausting it’s been as someone in the public eye ❤️ (Sorry for the long comment!)
Great episode. I’m a recently diagnosed diabetic in the UK. I was put on Semaglutide back in May. First, I couldn’t get the injections because, according to my pharmacist, “They can make a lot more money selling it as a weight loss drug in the USA so we can’t get enough.” So I was put on the pill form, which you have to wake up and take with a tiny amount of water and not eat or drink for 30-60min. I hated it. Then the pills ran out. So frustrating that I can’t get a drug I need for my serious health condition because people want it for aesthetic use.
Would hiring an editor be a good step to take some of the work off you guys?
As a budding podcaster I would find it difficult to trust someone to choose the important parts and cut out the irrelevant ones. Except maybe for bloopers etc.
I can't seem to listen to it on the Patreon app...
also not working for me. I can see a 49min episode, but it seems the link is broken bc it doesn't lead to anything. maybe it's a bug on patreon? 🤞🏽 Hope it's fixed soon 😭😭
Excited to listen to the extra rant. It will still somehow be articulate and brilliant. Thank you for everything you do.
Whatever works for you, I'm just so thankful that you both and this content exists. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️
I was so excited for the episode I subscribed on apple podcast dispute being a patreon subscriber to get it a few hours earlier
thank you for doing what you do 💜
We appreciate you at whatever speed you're going. Excited about the rant content! ❤️
