Pop Goes the Ovary
What Does Ovulation Look Like?
The ovary isn’t some peaceful pearl-maker. Nope. Each month it throws a brutal little competition where dozens of follicles line up like contestants on a reality show. Most of them get eliminated without ceremony. This is a pretty brutal process and it resultts in approximately a thousand eggs being lost each month (this is called atresia).
One follicle wins the crown and swells up like a water balloon taped to the side of the ovary. Inside an egg is patiently waiting for it 24 hour window to start. If it is not fertilized then all of this was for not (reproductively speaking).
When the time comes, the follicle doesn’t politely open, it ruptures. Tearing open the surface of the ovary and oozing out. The egg then (and it's helper goo) waits awkwardly until the uterine tube’s finger-like fimbriae scoop it up like a biological claw machine.
But here’s where it gets even weirder. That blown-out follicle doesn’t just collapse...it morphs into a hormone factory called the corpus luteum. Imagine if the wreckage from a demolished building suddenly started producing power for the whole city.
For two weeks it works overtime, cranking out progesterone which acts a warning system for the uterus that a fertilized egg may be incoming. And if the egg doesn’t get fertilized? The corpus luteum collapses and is dissolved by macrophages. Gradually it is filled in with scar tissue until it becomes the corpus albicans.
Over the years, these scars add up. That’s why ovaries don’t look smooth and pristine they age. They look like well-used boxing gloves, worn down from decades of monthly sparring matches. The ovary is a battlefield, and ovulation is its war story: bloody and relentless.

I always wondered why I have pain when I ovulate this make so much more sense! I thought something was wrong
so any tips and trick for battling menstrual cramps?? 😅
I've doubled over and gasped from feeling this a few times. I wish I'd asked for photos of my ovaries when they took them out.
And there are still people (including professionals) out there, telling us that it doesn't hurt when we ovulate 🙃
For some people there is no pain. I've been lucky. I've never had pain during ovulation.
I love this!! Its so easy to fully understand without being patronizing.
Don’t forget the pain. Some of us feel the explosion. It has bent me over whilst gasping. Then carrying on with what ever I was doing. Pat Benetar’s “Love is a Battlefield” is worming through my brain right now.
Oh Yeah! Its like I took a bullet from the war being waged! For me, it is usually only the LEFT ovary that I can feel. Every. Other. Month.
This is very cool to see and I love the way you explain it. Our bodies are amazing.
Look forward to showing this to my year 11 class!!
I'm having a little trouble understanding which part of that photo is the corpus albicans. Could you circle/label the parts?
