Introducing the Calyx Dress
Okay it's not exactly a seasonal cover image, but it's my only completed version of this pattern :)
I'm delighted to introduce the Calyx Dress, an elegant princess seamed day or cocktail dress, based on McCall 3745 from 1940.
The bodice meets the flared, twelve-gore skirt in a striking zig-zag seam that evokes the form of a flower's calyx - the cup of sepals that cradles the base of a bud or bloom. The name Calyx reflects this botanical inspiration.
The pattern comes with two neckline options: a high, round, jewel neckline as per the original 1940 release, or a lower, sweetheart shaped neckline. There is also a choice of short or three-quarter length sleeves.
The Calyx dress can be made in all-over fabric, or, as illustrated, you can use the seam line to play with colour-blocking or texture contrast, similarly to the Étoile circle skirt.

I can hardly wait to make this!! I love the Halloween cover image!!
Is the zipper at CB or in the side seam? The bodice back pattern in the A0 is on the fold - but now that I’ve started assembling I’ve realised the instructions are for CB.
Thank you! I especially love the shoulder princess seams (easier alteration if my size changes) and the color blocking idea. I have a lot of excess fabric remnants in my stash too.
Wow. Just wow. And that 40's option, making one part from one fabric you still have and the other from another - yes! (Because some of us have accrued a fair number of leftover "yard and somes" that are too good to throw away. )
Totally agree!
Love it, going straight to the top of the sewing list ;-)
Aww yay! Can’t wait to see what you make!
