Big Trouble in Little C -- The Korean Wars of Misogyny

So, here's an interesting story, and one I'm considering making a video about.

Apparently, there's been quite a bit of drama floating around the Korean gacha-gaming community recently concerning the Megalia symbol. The short version of the story is that in SK, this "little c" symbol has been finding its way into a lot of art in Korean made gacha games. This hand gesture is not a 4channic racist dog-whistle, as one might expect would be the case in the United States: it is, instead, a commonly used symbol on the 4chan-esque women's forum MEGALIA -- a site that has been at times called a women's rights meme-haven, and at other times been called a misandrist hive of scum and villainy.

What does this symbol represent, in the context of misogyny? Well... I'll give you one guess, and a hint: it's less of a lower case c, and more of a lower case p.

Gacha-gamers very often tend to be anime-loving men, and in South Korea, this group of people tends to be especially ... sensitive. We'll talk about that in the video, but Korean gacha gamers go to extreme lengths to protest what the average person might consider to be trivial things: like renting a truck to drive in circles around a corporate office all day, everyday, for a month, over the addition of more clothes to a female character's model.

This is an amusingly silly story on the surface, but it goes far deeper than one might realize: South Korea, more than any East Asian country, has ... let's say, a problem with machismo. Any East Asian will tell you that a sort of unspoken, often both slightly racist and stereotypical, "marriage hierarchy" exists, and that in that hierarchy, "don't let your daughters date Korean men, because they treat their women the worst" is a not an uncommon stereotype.

If I do make the video, we'll take a nice, deep-dive into Korean culture, and see if we can come to the surface with a respectful, nuanced look into ongoing, very serious gender conflicts going on in Korea, through the lens of gacha-games.

Let me know what you think about this idea! I'd love to hear your thoughts, comments, and more importantly perhaps, your experiences. Oh, and if you visit NYC after this video comes out and you see a truck circling an office building blasting anti-Moon Channel slogans, please come in and join me for some coffee. I just restocked the office with winter cookies, too!

I've always appreciated your content, but your willingness to talk about this specific topic made me decide to support you in any way I can. I'm not Korean, but I'm a trans woman that's only closeted at work - and I work with a Korean game company. All of this is terrifying for me, and I could say affects me directly.

One reason, among many, that I support you is for an introduction to social issues across the world that I had no idea of whatsoever.

My friend group is one who plays a lot of games from Korea, and they were just telling me about this issue literally the other day. I would love a video about this. Though considering I just watched your most recent video about the game industry and advocated for a Wizards of the Coast video too, maybe I'm getting a bit overeager, haha.

Oh damn, yeah I'm glad you're talking about this! It think it will be very useful context to learn about it. I remember seeing this from afar being like "this is... an extreme reaction and low-key conspiracy theory type evidence, what's going on??" I don't remember if I had mentioned it on Patreon or on a YouTube comment, but this recently occurred with Limbus Company by Project Moon (no relation) as well, and I was hoping you would cover it. I suppose the more recent allegations with this were far more sweeping to get attention, haha.

I absolutely can second that this is something said in even Southeast Asia; "don't let your daughters date Korean men, because they treat their women the worst" is a not an uncommon stereotype." What an... interesting new thing I have now learned about VG culture.

Certainly not a topic that was on my radar but I did love all your deep dives so far.

Wow, this is a fascinating topic that I've never even heard of, and I love when you do a big deep dive on the history and culture of a country to talk about a topic, so this sounds super cool!

Here's a relatively recent article concerning an assault by a self-proclaimed "male chauvinist" on a woman, for the "crime" of having short hair. https://m.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20231106000642 The war in SK between chauvinists and feminists has reached an almost preposterous fever-pitch, but it's not something you hear about very much in Western media!
