I know I’m super late responding to this so I apologize, but my mom told me she remembered seeing this in theaters in 1980 and she said to this day she can’t remember a theater that was laughing for more of the movie than for this one. I know you said it’s not exactly your cup of tea Natalie and no judgment here by any means, just thought I’d share some historical context.
Also, this is a shot-for-shot remake of the 50's movie "Zero Hour!" just with jokes added.
I met Robert Hayes (Stryker) at a convention a few years back, got to get a picture with him, he's a real nice guy.
I hope your editor compiles all of your eye-rolling. It would make a great short video!
I think Clue would be more up your alley
This definitely needs a specific type of humor to enjoy (One I have in spades! lol). Its the same people who made Naked Gun and Hot Shots. The Zucker/Abrams team really liked silly comedies. And considering this is a farcical movie made 46 years ago, most of the jokes hold up well. There are many jokes people won't get simply because they are references to things from the 1970's.
I wonder if that means eventually she might watch The Naked Gun
The main that really made this comedy work is the fact that its cast is nearly entirely made up of serious actors who haven't done comedy before. And nearly all of the performances are done entirely straight, without mugging to the camera. So you have all these incredibly silly sometimes dumb things happening, but the characters all treat it like it's the most serious thing ever. That to me makes it extra funny. In particular, Leslie Nielsen, who's pretty well known for comedy with The Naked Gun films, hadn't actually done a single comedy prior to this film. (He played the doctor in this.) And so at the time, it was wild to see serious actor Nielsen be so ridiculous. The main pilot by the way was played by Peter Graves, who had a long career before this, mainly serious films. And he was also a main character on the original Mission: Impossible TV series. Again, going back to serious actors being incredibly silly, but with a straight face. For me personally, this one of those movies, where there's brilliant jokes, and there's dumb jokes. But the execution of the dumb jokes is just right where I enjoy the hell out of it. I enjoy it BECAUSE it's dumb, and they made me look at it. The most fun trivia about the movie though is that it was largely a parody of the serious flight films Zero Hour! and Airport 1975. In fact, it borrowed so much from Zero Hour!, that they ended up buying the rights to remake the film just in case, all so they could continue said parody without being sued.
just what we love hearing...i have no time so busy. imma watch this for you, but so busy. Just start it and dont say anything.
It's an overrated movie that has a few great oneliners. Definately not one of the best comedies of all time.
Surely you can't be serious... that you've not seen this before? I just want to wish you good luck. We're all counting on your reaction.
This was an enjoyable reaction despite you not liking this kind of movie. By the way, you missed the after credit scene.
There's also gags in the credits themselves. A few fake credits as gags.
I'm think Scary Movie 1-3 and the new will be the parodies to get her lol
Oh dear, I don't think this film aged well.
I still think this film is a fun time, but if you disliked Spaceballs then yeah, these types of comedies might not be for you. I would be shocked if you felt the same way about Office Space though. That’s a classic and immensely quotable. Late 90s comedy which is probably way more up your alley, like Zoolander or Liar Liar.
Also, this was almost a shot for shot parody of an older film, Zero Hour.
One of the jokes you're probably too young to get is that the "Jive-Talking Lady" was played by Barbara Billingsley - who played June Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver.
How many times has my dad told me to not call him Shirley over the years? ∞
this along with Hot Fuzz is one of the main comedy films my friend and i are always quoting to each other particaulary the one about the "wrong week to quit". fun trivia the guy on the radar is a young Jonathan Banks (Mike from breaking bad)
The two who did the announcer voices in the beginning were the actual announcers from LAX at the time. And co-pilot Roger perfectly shows why Roger is not standard phrasology for airline pilots. And the reason there is an exclamation point in the title is because there was one in the diaster movie they took the script from: Zero Hour!
Funny you talked about dressing up as them in the disco scene as a niche reference, because they're dressed up as a reference to Saturday Night Fever
Nat, you laughed a few times and I suppose that's good enough for me, cheers. 😊
Once you said that this movie reminds you of Spaceballs and that you weren't a fan of the humor in it, I thought "oh no..." but at least you enjoyed this one a smidge more.
OMG I can't wait to watch this with you after work! I LOVE it when people react to Airplane!
At last, the Sistine Chapel of comedy. We need more of this 10 out of 10 Jewy vaudevillian fare, like The Producers and Night At The Opera, especially now that you can spot the influence on movies like Airplane! and Naked Gun.
Happy Feature Friday Nat. It's been years since I've watched this crazy movie, so I've been looking forward to seeing it again with you today 😊 Haha, I think I was enjoying watching your facial expressions and you rolling your eyes more than I was enjoying the movie Nat 😆
