My husband's family is Ukrainian and makes piroshki with ground turkey, hardboiled egg, and onion--we're definitely going to try this cabbage filling! We also like them with ketchup!😁

Ooo! I want to know all the soup recipes! (They look amazing though)

Actually, we were wondering if we could check your translation on "poppy seed oil," as we don't think that's ever been a staple cooking oil over there. Mind if I ask for your source? :)

Oh, and it's "Tatar" invasion. /editor /andgiantnerd

The history was repellent, yet fascinating. The food looks delicious. Well done 👏

Those look *really* good, though I'll say they're even better with the chopped hard-boiled egg. ;) Also, though you did break our brains a bit going back and forth on the pronunciation of the main name (my husband is an Ivan), well done on most of the rest of the Russian!

Also-also, Ivan the Great was his grandfather, Ivan III, Grand Prince of Moscow. Weird turnaround in two generations. o.o

Fascinating

Thanks for another fun video! I have a kitchen question 🙋🏻 I moved somewhere that has kitchen counters similar to yours (white quartz) and I’m wondering what your kitchen surface cleaner of choice is. I get nervous about using something that will damage the finish, but want to make sure things get sanitized after my cats do kitchen crimes. Thank u!

Brilliant ! I use smetana for the dough.

I once ran across an English language history of Russia—probably Soviet produced—that referred to “John the Dread.” It took me a few seconds to realize who they were talking about.

Ivan is said to have been the inspiration for the legend of Bluebeard, btw. The one who murdered all his wives because the first died or was unfaithful.

There are a couple of candidates for that dubious honor. One of them is Gilles de Rais, who fought at the side of Joan of Arc.

Max, you just made my entire day with this video...

There’s some evidence Ivan had syphilis, either acquired or congenital, and that’s why his mental state collapsed the way it did.

High fevers (104+) can also cause brain damage. This often affects the personality centers in the brain.

Yea almost everything that we call him terrible for was fairly common among the Kievan Rus rulers and to a smaller extent the Moscovy princes. Killing anyone who could take away their power was normal. He just did it more times. He also was taking mercury as medicine which drives people insane hence accidentally killing his son. They still honor him in Russia for all the good things he did. Western Europe just emphasized the terrible things he did in comparison to them to make Russia look like a backwater country even more. Грозный, his epithet, still translates to formidable in modern Russian, not terrible.

Just for the record, a note on the translation of Грозный already appears near the beginning of the history part of the video.

The list of "what ifs" related to the Tudors is almost endless. That's what makes me obsessed with those people. I did not remember, though, that Ivan the Terrible proposed to Elizabeth I. What an incredible plot twist it would have been!

There's one what-if I'll be dealing with pretty soon in my accidental series of articles on Juana of Castile which I'm working on: after the death of Philip the Handsome, Henry VII was interested in marrying Juana. He had met her briefly when she and Philip were blown off course to Spain in 1505. Philip did his darndest to isolate Juana, but Henry had seen enough to interest him. In a weird twist, Juana's sister, Catherine of Aragon, who had been given ambassadorial credentials by Fernando, participated in these negotiations. So. What if Juana and Henry VII had married...? (As a faithful member of the Richard III Society, I dislike Henry VII with great intensity, but this is one thing I must be grateful to him for: he sincerely (and probably correctly) suspected that there was nothing wrong with Juana of Castile, who has come down in history as "Juana la Loca". I seem to be on the path of disproving that title).

Your pride is well justified! They look amazing, I am now truly hungry.

M
Maria Torres · October 11, 2025

They do! One of the most tempting things among so many tempting things I've seen on the channel.

Definitely gonna make these ^.^

Same!
