Breakbeat of the month #12: classic DNB break [video + downloads]
I will go thru a classic breakbeat that has been used in DNB a lot, and I will link you to a song that I made and released on vinyl 20 years ago.
There's a more rare version of it that was used by Source Direct, and it took me a while to find out what version they were using, but now I think I have figured it out.
Tune in to a video where I say a few words about the history ´ and I flex the break on Ableton.
Video lesson is 20 minutes long so should be easy to digest.
You will get all sample downloads (original break, plus one processed by me) as well as Ableton Drum Racks using the sample, so you don't have to chop it up: I've done it for you ✂️😋
I will also add links to songs for educational purposes: know your DNB and breakbeat history.

I cant access the video on dropbox :( I have sent request to access it.
Granted access! This Patreon post (or Dropbox relating to it) has to be somehow odd and bugged, as I get the file requests all the time, while I have set the file to be accessible to anyone with the link…odd!
Some of my favorite DNB Drums right now are DJ Crystals Beats and Breaks DNB Steppa Vibes. Just really great drums to work with for DNB A/B Versions And Raw of each so its nice when you just want to get on with it. But its fun to process too! Dont get me wrong.
Yeah he is great; I talk to him sometimes. I'm of the school where you process the original one, "roll your own" :) All the filler breaks in my Strobelight tune are from Crystl.
Its awesome when I find A big patreon. I love breaks and appreciate the content. I really want to check out your DNB pack. Im a huge dark Rollers guy but love the Jungle Garage stuff too. Anything with breaks is always best.
I seem to be having trouble opening the .adg file in Ableton 12. It just says unable to load. Do I need to create a particular file structure with the sample for it to work or something? I looked at examples online but couldn't find anything helpful.
Should be able to drag straight in. Ableton Live 12, release version.
Feel a bit dumb here, I can get the racks to open, but how do I get the midi pattern pulled in. so I can have the starting notes in there to play with, or do I need to just create the pattern from scratch?
Ah, yeah, I didn't share midi: only racks. Racks do not contain midi info. The racks will refer to the audio files I sent.
I had a go at making a tune like this a few years back. Very rough and ready mix but I think it has character :) https://tricearkayik.bandcamp.com/track/unknown-transmissions
Nice, there it is!
Yes, please to a pad lesson. I need one big time. Can't really get anything that satisfies me. Love your one. That's what I'm after. Also, would love some insight into the 90's Photek beats - Knitevision! Just listened to Source Direct - Call and Response again. Is that also the Apache? And their Black Rose... a lot going on in there. Like 3-4 different breaks.
Call and Response: I covered that break in Breakbeat of the Month #11 ;-) It's also in Black Rose. Noted about pads!
I remember thinking Source Direct were pretty good until I started trying to make music myself, when I realised that actually they're completely berserk. So much hidden depth
Yeah there is so much detail in their music. It may sound simple but if you are a producer, you can hear the intricacy; a lot of dudes these days couldn't do that. You can tell they took their time.
Nice one, I was looking forward to another one of these.. only thing is I don't have access to the video.. not sure if it's just me
I fixed the link – should work now, can you please try again?
