The best plugins for drums! 13 plugins [50 min. video]
Been meaning to cover the best plugins for drums that I know of, and here they are!
Not much to add: video will tell you.
I've created this little text on the left side of the screen that mentions the plugin, in case you want to skim thru!
Lemme know what you are rocking with drums!

Thanks for all the great info! With the tape plugins, if you have the luxury of working on the mix as well, would you use them both at the drum buss and the master? For example I saw in one of the mastering videos you like using two tape plugins next to each other and they sound great. Would you also tape the drum buss for example if you tape the master? Thanks!
I try not to oversaturate things; I have sometimes have Slate VTM and UAD Ampex on the master; former for "girth" and latter for a little hi-mid lift. Less is more.
Spiff is so useful. I like using it to remove a bit of transient information so I have less elements with substantial attack. Curious if you've used that new Dime TT plugin that separates tonal and attack information.
Haven’t checked Dime TT but a plugin by Boz called Transgressor does that and it’s great!
Love snapback. Decapitator is a must use for me, love its tone option. I also like Roar and using it in mulitband with an envelope follower with a little to no release to add to transients. Stuck with pro Q2 but might buy it tomorrow before the sales end. - Two Leos
I really love Orion. Trialled it and it was an instant purchase.
Yeah! I can't recall that many plugins from the past few years that made me feel "Oh snap, I actually need this" but that one really did it for me.
When working on John summits drums, what are you usually reaching for?
Awesome vid! for the Orion plugin - where in the chain would you use it? if it is at the end, what type of processing would you apply before it? seems like the plugin adds a lot processing as it, so curious where / when you'd use it
can be anywhere really; possibly once you've cleaned up the signal, you'd slap it in…anywhere works
Any thoughts on Oxford Enveloper vs. Oeksound spiff? Was thinking about picking up one of them and the former happens to be on sale.
Spiff ONLY handles transients but is better at it than Enveloper….but Enveloper is AMAZING at getting the sustain/aggression up
Devil Loc at that 10% mix setting was an amazing tip FANU! Really nice thickening glue 💪🏼
Yessssir!
Hey Janne, great video as always! I'm grouping Devil-Loc in parallel with a Dry chain, with the Devil-Loc mix knob at 10, I mess with the plug-in's settings to get the tone I want, and then blend in the Devil-Loc chain's level to taste afterwards (I usually start around -10 db and go from there). Would you recommend against that method in any way? It's been great for me so far, but I'm just curious if you had any other alternative strategies since the thing is so sensitive. Thanks!
Literally anything that sounds good to you is the way to go – there are no rules! Well, that's the only rule and bottom line in audio anyways :)
This was great! Added G.A.S!😬 have you used the UAD API Vision strip?
Yes I have it
This is all gold. Thanks. I started using the mutliband dynamics stock plugin after you mentioned it long ago, and it was a game changer. Fosfat also lookks great. Odd Q, but: Do you ever use mid-side on lows-mids on drums?
Sometimes yeah; especially some house guys widen their drums in such way that the widening makes the very lows of claps wide, so I tend to shave that a bit. On sides, I don’t like transients, thickness, or excess low/high-mids…other than that, happy to go wide!
Awesome! Thanks for the insight :)
What do you think of the Air Windows plugins?
Haven’t used much but there’s this one called Drumslam that’s quite nice; modeled after Massey Tape Head which sadly doesn’t exist on formats other than .aax anymore
Hey bro. Aside from slate tape (just cancelled it as that’s all I was using in the bundle), which other tape emulators u recommend?
Free: ChowDSP tape and NI Kontakt "VHS" Paid: UAD Ampex, UAD Studer ...off the top of my head!
<3 best way to spend Valentine's day
Plugins and DAW = the true valentine/friend :D
