Mastering a DNB song [video]
I want to be covering mastering more. Episode 1 here: mastering a DNB song that needs its tone corrected. Let's make it nice and balanced.
I want to be covering mastering more.
Here, I had a particularly harsh-sounding song that mostly needed its tone to be balanced out. I'm showing the tools I used for it and talk a little bit about mastering in general.
I'm also showing how I set up my mastering projects.
I obviously have way more tools that I use in this project.
More mastering stuff coming! This one was sort of simple, yet demanding tone-wise.
Qs? Hit me up!

How do you get your bands set on the dynamics of ozone? You don’t use learn?
never used learn. often set them by ear, like what feels good / useful per band. 2nd band: 70-520 3rd band: 520-9.5K
This is great to see. Recent discussions with other producers have me referencing (finally), and I've found out that clipping is necessary if I want to match certain references. That said, liquid DnB tracks seem to be a mixed bag when it comes to dynamic range. Most aren't below -6 to -7 RMS, but some are like -3.2 (which I somehow matched, by clipping.) How does one view/check for interstitial peaks? I was told that track sounded good, but now I'm not sure if that wasn't because it was loud. 😄
For example, on Mac, you can type into terminal "afclip" and drag a file into that…then hit enter, and if you have no ISPs, it's a short bit of text you get, but if you do have ISPs, you usually get a pretty long list of numbers. For the record, I do NOT recommend anyone trying to push their stuff to -3 unless they're masterful engineers...that is a danger zone and nearly 100% of the time unnecessary. There is a lot of great stuff around -7/-6.
Great video! I typically end my mastering chain with standard clip -> invisible limiter. Any considerations or differences between using a clipper and limiter, instead of two limiters?
Clipper is way less forgiving if 1) you push it a hair too much or 2) have a bit too much bass (limiter can flex a bit) So in some cases it’ll distort more easily. I never clip the master unless going louder than -6 or so
Great stuff 🙏
Ozone sub compression is a great tip. Sub target level in span is a great tip. The Master Rebalance technique is a great tip. This is definitely worth watching carefully!
Glad you like! I will be covering more scenarios in the future, containing these little tips...there's a lot of small stuff always to take into account!
