Kill Or Be Quilt #1 roughs
WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS A SPOILER FOR THE WHOLE FIRST ISSUE OF GREAT BRITISH BUMP OFF: KILL OR BE QUILT. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ A (VERY) ROUGH BUT COMPLETE VERSION OF ISSUE 1, DON'T OPEN THE PDF LINKED AT THE BOTTOM.
Just like the original Bump-Off, Kill Or Be Quilt was tough to nail down into a final version, but once I did, it was a world that made sense. One of my inspirations was the opening titles to the BBC Miss Marple with Joan Hickson. They change over the years but always feature a mix of village bucolica (is this a word?) and side-eye. What I sought was a Sunday-night TV feeling.
I talk more about the various animating elements of the story in the podcast I posted yesterday. I think it would have been more fun to write if I hadn't done it immediately after having moved house, but as with certain other high-pressure creative tasks I've performed over the years, after the fact I barely recall doing it. Probably for the best.
GREAT BRITISH BUMP OFF: KILL OR BE QUILT #1 IS OUT FROM DARK HORSE TODAY.

Is my old comic shop great or what. Looks like they'll get physical copies and it's already on my pull list. Vault of Midnight, Ann Arbor, MI
I'm sure you'll all be happy to know that less than an hour after I read the issue I spilled a mug of tea over it (and my hardcover of Giant Days vol. 7). : D
Commiserations, Matthew. I once dropped my Wacom pen in a cup of coffee while singing along to Still Dre by Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg.
"Providing breakdowns for Max that are - hopefully - interesting and varied has proved very important to improving the work that I draw myself." There's something alchemical about creative collaborations. I think it's a mix of cross-pollination — seeing how someone else handles a given challenge or issue — and lateral thinking — having some random bit of jammed brain hardware knocked loose, so your mind can explore a wholly new direction.
We really lucked out that you found Max as a creative partner. The dream team.
Yes, working with Max has been a special experience. I'm not sure when we'll get another chance so I treasured getting these pages as they came in during autumn and winter 2023.
Is there any chance of a Mildred story at some point?
I'm sure she will get her day in the sun eventually.
