[MW Original] Mechouatl - CR 14 Huge Construct - $10 Reward

“Whose bright idea was it to commission one of these for a temple devoted to the Lady of Lies?”

—H. Indsight, Obviously Captain

Across religions, temples and houses of faith are guarded by sentinels of stone, their forms varying broadly, from lions and warriors to celestials and gargoyles. And when there’s even the faintest possibility of such guardians coming alive, the faithful and faithless alike should be especially wary of any shaped like a couatl, for it might be not only silently assessing their every move, but also judging each one… harshly.

Averse to Ambiguity. The first mechouatls were given shape by plane-renowned sculptor Inomis Lochivodo during the final days of his life. The passion poured into them by their creator reacted strangely with the slabs of numenite—a stone quarried from holy mountains—from which they were fashioned, infusing the Constructs with a touch of the divine. This granted them locomotion, a mind of their own, and—much like the creatures that inspired them—a complete disregard for the concept of grey areas and half-measures. Mechouatls don’t stand on ceremony. The slightest hint of ill will in a temple’s visitor is more than enough reason for their swift and total annihilation.

Pugnacious Protectors. Due to this minor design flaw, it did not take long before reports emerged of temples being vacated due to rampaging mechouatls. More than one priest intending to get a little tipsy on sacramental wine found the act deemed attempted theft by the serpentine sentries, who promptly delivered righteous punishment. Many of the holy places that commissioned mechouatls now stand abandoned, their halls empty and silent… until visitors bearing nefarious intentions come along, and the statuary shakes off the dust of its vigil and coils to strike once more.
