The Blackspine goblin tribes give all goblinkind a bad name—well, a worse name. Violent, cruel, and mercilessly sadistic, these goblins have forgone their ancestral pantheon to worship a legendary black dragon, whose power they claim rivals that of the very gods. This new faith commands its followers to indulge in their murderous impulses without restraint, rewarding the most ruthless among them by transforming them into nergigoblins—living vessels of the dragon’s dark will.

Lethal Honour. On average, the ritual that produces the ferocious nergigoblins—a sacrilegious orgy of bloodbaths and sacrifices—results in the deaths of no fewer than five of its participants, often including the hopeful initiate. Few are capable of containing the dragon’s endless malice, yet despite the astronomical death rate, the goblins submit to the rite in droves. Fueled by their fanaticism, each one firmly believes that they will be the one to break the mold and ascend… but out of every ten, nine end up being dead wrong.

Unruly Rulers. Once a new nergigoblin rises, it takes up a position as warlord and bravely faces its most daunting challenge yet: coexisting with other nergigoblins. Instead of a singular chief, the Blackspine tribes defer to a chaotic council of all their surviving champions. Disagreements within this ruling body are settled in a predictable fashion—through brutal combat, with the voice of the strongest ultimately ringing the loudest. It’s not uncommon for these disputes to result in the deaths of one or more nergigoblins, which are raucously celebrated by the entire tribe. After all, they just prove that one of their leaders is mighty enough to slay even another vessel of the black dragon.

Pint-Sized Hunters. There is but one occasion when nergigoblins work together in perfect harmony: when facing a great foe in combat. These zealous, bloodthirsty warriors seek out powerful creatures known to gather hoards and wipe them out for the benefit of their draconic overlord, who then “appropriates” the newly ownerless treasure. As for their ancient nemeses, the goblins of the Brutescale tribes… the nergigoblins happily massacre those without needing to be told, especially if they have the chance to cut down one of the Brutescales’ hideous attack dogs— the abominable devilghobs.
