MM48 - Barry Lyndon
Greetings Minders, Will here, and to kick off this season, I wanted to do another one-movie episode with Felix like we did last year with CASINO, and I knew I wanted it to be another movie that has cast a long shadow over both my personal mind palace and the chapo extended universe. I wanted it to be another movie that I could easily count as both “my favorite movie of all time” as well as argue that it is “the best movie of all time” and I wanted it to be a movie Felix had never seen. And there is only one film that fits that bill, Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece BARRY LYNDON.
Travel back to the 18th century, take ten paces, cock your pistols, aim, fire and witness the rise and fall of an Irish asshole. Good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, we will all be equal soon.
As with all our miniseries, this first episode of the season is free on all platforms. All subsequent eps will be available exclusively at patreon.com/chapotraphouse

I'm chiming in a month late because I need to defend Reverend Runt and besmirch Barry's mom. Yes, Runt is creepy, but I think it's a mistake to take it at face value when Barry's mom blames him for Lady Lyndon's poor health and cans him. She only cares about securing the bag, and she has to kick Runt out because he actually cares about Lady Lyndon, whereas Barry's mom would prefer she took a macrodose of poison next time. He's her gay best friend, and it's a triumph of justice that he gets with the other freaks and saves her from the Irish interlopers. Anyway, thanks for recording this and giving me a nudge to finally watch this! Amazing.
Anybody else get the Complete Kubrick?
Late to the chat, but I have to say that Ryan O'Neall's performance is near perfect in this movie. I think Kubrick is of the actors-are-cattle mindset like Hitchcock. Nevertheless, he uses O'Neal so well. And O'Neal fills the role in such a way that you can't imagine anyone else as Barry. It's a great role for a teen idol
Felix is getting trigger happy with sopranos references

The first guy they cheat at cards is the general who gives the speech that makes you cry in the last band of brothers episode.
Stanley Kubrick shows Americans, Europeans and Anglos for their true barbaric nature. I think that says a lot more about his art than saying he has a pessimistic view of humanity. He had a pessimistic view of the West.
This was awesome. I’m so happy movie mindset is back, I love this shit.
Glove Slap Baby!
The book is a fun read. It's hilariously racist against the Irish, all shown as liars and thieves of the lowest sort. Felix would love it. One of the more amusing bits of book-to-film translation is that those grim final lines are originally in the first 40 pages or so, and it's casually tossed off by Barry in a description of an inconsequential feud between two dead relatives. Also amusing is the book's description of Brian shows that he's exactly as shitty and underhanded as his father, but viewed through the rose-tinted glasses of his father's narration, the terror he inflicts on the servants is him just being a lovable scamp.
Tatum O’Neal, Bad News Bears legend
I first saw Barry Lyndon about a decade ago and it was immediately one of my favorite movies. I never understood how some people found it slow (especially in the 70s when movies were much less frenetic). My girlfriend at the time and I watched it on the couch and were transfixed. More than any other movie I’ve seen, it transports you into its world. I’m not a huge Kubrick head. I like all of his movies but this is the only one I would include among my favorites. The dryness that makes his other movies feel distant, somehow makes Barry Lyndon feel more immersive and emotionally resonant. Idk. I don’t have much to say that the hosts didn’t already express in a more eloquent way. Thanks for this one!
The letter lady Lyndon signs at the end is dated 1789 so the movie ends basically right before the french revolution, it adds another layer to the "they are all equal now" line
Barry was staring out the window with a thousand island stare
A lot of the dialogue wasn't Kubrik but the novelist Thackeray who originally wrote the book almost 200 years ago.
I just watched this movie tonight with my two “Irish” American Gen-X triple Trump voter parents They both hated it and thought it was too gay yet stayed awake all the way though which was a genuine surprise 10/10 amazing movie have a palpable sense of being a disappointment as a son by the end of it Crazy shenanigans always be happening when you murder a guy for your hot cousin then kiss your pseudo uncle when he dies in war relatable tale as old as time fr fr
Hello nobody brought up the way you can hear bullets thwacking wet meat in the first battle
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Shout out to Thackeray for writing a hella good novel
Paul Walker as Melville’s Pierre? I had to rewind that back. An idea too good for this world, Hesse
Hesse's "Irish accent" Sounds like she's in Fargo.
please restock the movie mindset hat!
You took Katherine to Crumb? And piggyback rides follow???
I have to say I have been holding off on rewatching any Kubrick until I get my hands on the Criterion box set later this month but reading the description and finding out that there is another human being who believes that Barry Lyndon is the greatest movie of all time and lives rent free in their mind Palace I have to listen to this episode now even though I haven't seen Barry Lyndon in several years.
As a tuft-bald haver I can confirm: we get no respect
Will keeps saying “Potsdam” instead of “Potzdorf” and yes I’m feeling extremely smug now that I noticed that
we've all got that dog in us (kind of a piece of shit coward)
If Felix fathers a child someday, he will find a way to compare the child’s birth to the fifth season of The Sopranos.
You missed the point by idolizing him (Barry Lyndon)
Oh man! Oh God, oh man! Oh God, oh man! Oh God, oh man! Oh God, oh man, oh God!
"THE CAPTAIN FEENEY?" "The very same, Mr Shapiro. Now why don't you get off your horse and tell us all about your yamulke."
"MMMMMM Verrryyy good, Mr. Shapiro"
Of all the people I know from being hot and great in exactly one movie – and they've probably done 89 movies, but I haven't seen them, because I'm dumb – Lady Lyndon is so fuckin' fine
So much talk about the story and narration, but nary a mention of the author of the novel from which it came: William Makepeace Thackeray.
Oh thank god you included the 21 savage song
One of my all time favs
Regarding Felix's comment at 13:30 about books on dueling, there's one by Marxist historian V. G. (Victor Gordon) Kiernan ... https://spartacus-educational.com/Victor_Kiernan.htm ... "The Duel in European History" ... Really liked his book on American imperialism and recently started on his "State & Society in Europe 1550-1650", but now may set it aside and read the duel book because of this ep.
them describing lord bullingdon as basically young JD Vance but failing to get there was like having a tooth pulled. bit edging
The original Barry O’Bungler
https://boxd.it/XZKGQ Letterboxd list ^^
only watched this movie for the first time after seeing the 21 savage edit
That Felix line about them being like the anti Beni-gesserit "our plans are measured in miliseconds" is an all timer Felix quote. 😭
Cpt Potzdorf < Cpt SUNY Potsdam
Most interesting part of this film is the genuine warmth, tenderness, and humanity Barry has for his son, which is perhaps unique in Kubrick's oeuvre. Jack Torrance and Humbert Humbert are perhaps the worst fathers in all of literature, and Alex DeLarge's father (also played by Delbert/Charles Grady!) shows a cowardly fright and deliberate blindness to his own son's sociopathic nature. Unlike Jack, Alex, or Humbert, Barry is too stupid to be truly evil, and because of his warmth towards Bryan and conciliatory gestures towards Bullingdon, I find his demise affecting. Kubrick's ability to get this warmth out of such a cold film is what makes this a masterpiece imo.
Fantastic! Thank you everyone
As a gun guy the desert eagle is sort of a classic stupid guy pistol, doubly so if it’s in the bespoke 50 caliber round. People buy them because they loved them in mw2 or predator 2 and then leave them in the safe and never shoot them because they are kind of shitty guns.
Bro they marched like that for good reasons, mainly in order to keep discipline so people wouldnt just break and run, which, incidentally was a big problem for the americans in the revolutionary war
Myths about early modern warfare on my chapo?! The podcast that made hell on earth
All-time great film and episode of MM. Thanks for this.
here for the hesse
First time I saw the opening credits I thought, Ryan O'Neal? What is Kubrick DOING? But he is perfect in the part. Glad to hear that come up.
Watched Barry Lyndon for the first time about a month ago in preparation for this
This is the best Chapo episode ever
This movie mindset season is gonna slap. Kind request for 2001 Space Odyssey next season.
This is a big deal for guys like me
This episode made me watch Barry Lyndon. Thought it was a fantastic movie and now I want to watch Rob Roy for the first time since I saw it when I was 12
The original Father Intontola im dead
🎶 how much money you got (a lot)
Totally absinthe any warmth
Fuck you guys, I was finally able to cut down my patreons then you go and do barry lyndon
doing a Misery on Felix until he agrees to record a movie mindset on Snake Eyes (1998)
I read the final duel scene as a commentary on being low born and being high born. Barry is a low class upstart and inherent in that is some degree of humanity. Bullington was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and fundamentally doesn’t see other people as human.
I've been fiending for this
Leonard Rossiter (Quin) was great. So good as the boss in Billy Liar.
Mindset is back baybee
Hell yeah, I was just rewatching it earlier this week...
Those candles would've been each tripple wicked btw Most films these days just go for double
Wait why isn't this one 12 hours?
Putting this ep on at 1.25x speed while BL plays in the background at 1.5x speed so that we all finish at the same time
This film is not Calvinist, redemption is not predestined. It is Machiavellian and Nietzschean. Barry is bold and exploits every opportunity, and Fortune favors him over and over again. In the single instance he shows Christian love and forgiveness he loses everything.
That sounds sort of Calvinist to me lol
The scene where he gets robbed is one of the most devastating in any movie. Already on his own then left with nothing
WE ARE THE GRANDSONS OF THE GENTLEMEN YOU COULDN'T KILL IN A DUEL
I think this is the best movie ever made.
Catching Felix talk about Thackeray twice, that’s some targeted content
My fellow libs are freaking out bc this movie was a clue in the NYT crossword recently
only thing I know about this movie is that they used a crazy large aperture lens to film the indoor scenes
You already know you gotta hit 21 Savage’s “A Lot”
Barry Lyndon taught me to never let my feelings get in the way of a good shot.
This so rad, whats next? Players club disco elysium?
Run time as long as Barry Lyndon. Got success mindset Barry Lyndon
Barry should've gotten little lord Bullingdon a fuckin horse.
Go to sick on the couch movie. Also a prime contender for “movie better than the book” champion
Hell yes
Felix weapon chat is BACK!
Felix watched this movie on a cam rip from 123movies.ru
Also 21 Savage x Barry Lyndon fancam shout-out
Came here to post this. Real talk.
Another season of not being able to understand the lyrics in the intro song
This makes me so happy
No comment on the fact Captain Feeney is the spitting image of Matt Christman?
But not though

Omg, huge out the gate
In this moment, I am euphoric
Ugh who's ready for a slog
Good stuff, but I was kind of hoping for another horror season
Fuuuck yeah
Wait, no Halloween series this year? 😞
gonne listen to this by the candlelight as O’Kubrick intended.
SLOPPY TREATS ARE HERE
I was just wondering a couple days ago when MM would be back. This is a pleasant surprise
Oh fuck yes!
DID I MISS THE MM SCHEDULE RELEASE 😱😱😱
Never seen it, kinda beefing with Kubrick after seeing 2001
