play! and ares compatibility report (09/2023)

First, the good news: I was able to finish a lot of games for both projects this month (8 GBA games for ares, 17 games for play!).

ares

New GBA verified playable games:

  • Tetris Worlds (Europe) (En,Fr,De,Nl)

  • Tetris Worlds (Europe)

  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Europe)

  • xXx (USA, Europe)

  • Yu Yu Hakusho - Ghostfiles - Spirit Detective (USA)

  • Taiketsu! Ultra Hero (Japan)

  • Play Novel - Silent Hill (Japan)

  • Serious Sam Advance (USA)

I have a short TODO list of (at least) another 8 GBA games I want to finish for this next month, so you can expect similar results for the next report.

play!

New verified playable games:

  • Doko Demo Issho: Watashi na Ehon

  • Clock Tower 3

  • Hansel and Gretel

  • Animal Soccer World

  • Pinocchio

  • Super Fruit Fall

  • Eternal Ring

  • Wheel of Fortune

  • Little Britain: The Video Game

  • Nickelodeon Avatar: The Last Airbender

  • Beta Bloc

  • Blokus Club with Bumpy Trot

  • Culdcept

  • Choro Q

  • CID The Dummy

  • Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro: Battle da yo! Hannin Shuugou!

  • Code Lyoko: Quest for Infinity

Those were the games that were confirmed as fully playables, but there's a bunch of recent improvements that made some in-game stuff progress as well (sadly not enough for them to become playables, but much closer than previously). There's also some nice sound improvements being worked on that will allow progress in some other titles (with at least 1 other game being playable once the changes are merged).

Now for the bad news: my HDD dockstation finally died, so I no longer have access to my main storage for PS2/PS1 and N64 games. While this doesn't prevent me from being able to test a couple of games at once, it's still a major hit in my ability of quickly comparing statuses between different versions of each emulator. My plan for now is to save some bucks (from Patreon itself), and get both a M2 external case + M2 cheap storage to replace the dockstation, but I'm all ears if anyone has any tip on some other cheaper solution.

Well, that's it for september, see you all next report ;)
