play! progress report (02/08/2026)
This month was the end of a looong double testing run, which was specially long due to the game I've been testing: Final Fantasy XII. The US region was already confirmed as playable for some time, but both the PAL and the specially improved JP release didn't had the same attention until now. This has been a long 3 months efforth jumping between games, doing all the possible quests and side content, but both are finally confirmed as fully playables. Let's see the latest gains compatibility wise:
New verified playable games [07/2026]:
Combat Queen
Final Fantasy XII (PAL)
Final Fantasy XII International: Zodiac Job System
Combat Queen: both confirmed as fully playable and I've made a patch to improve it's performance. While the patch that was merged works well, there's a previous version of it that wasn't as safe (but it's faster). You can just load the game and the regular patch will be applied, but if you need an extra boost, you can just change the memory address mentioned on the older version here https://github.com/jpd002/Play-/pull/1593/changes/c5ab605e18aae436e0b99962132aa673e4e22710 on your GameConfig.xml.
Final Fantasy XII (PAL): confirmed as fully playable, pretty much the same behavior as the US version.
Final Fantasy XII International: Zodiac Job System: this japanese exclusive version was also fully verified. One interesting thing about this version is the inclusion of a "turbo" toggle, that makes the game run 2x faster (which is specially useful for grinding or just walk long distances when you don't need to pay attention), but that doesn't come for free performance wise: it uses almost 2x the PS2 CPU, so the framerate goes down a lot, but at the same time it skips frames. The result is that the game will indeed run much faster, but the visuals/number of frames updated will not look as smooth as when you play it at regular speed. The popular translation patch to english was also confirmed to fully work with this version with no issues found.
I'm now poking around some other RPGs/JRPGs, so this wil again take a long time to verify but at least we're taking down the hardest games to test from the list. Thx again for the support and see you all next month <3
