Trust Issues

I am really skeptical and have trust issues. But it makes complete and total sense when you work in Web Development in general, and with CSS in particular.

Take for example named colors in CSS:

  • Did you know that darkgray is lighter than gray?

  • Or that there is a family of sea green colors (seagreen, lightseagreen, mediumseagreen, and darkseagreen) in which darkseagreen is lighter than lightseagreen? Not to mention that lightseagreen and darkseagreen are not even close to the hue of seagreen and mediumseagreen

And it goes beyond colors, too! Take font-weights for example, you can define them in an absolute way: "normal", "bold", a numeric value... but also using relative values: "lighter" and "bolder". Because they are relative to the parent, you may arrive to a situation in which the font-weight of "bolder" is lighter than "bold"... not confusing at all.

I wanted to create a comic to showcase those inaccuracies or quirks in the language, and the most obvious (and known) one was the relation between gray and darkgray. Thus the comic.

One of those comics that I like: simple, moderately funny, and somewhat educational about CSS. A triple threat 🤣
