Two Brits hike through rural Virginia (How NOT to Travel America #5)
Here we go Patreon gang!
*Watch with subtitles and in HD for full effect*
In this episode Tom and Greg set off from Washington DC and head for thee wilderness of Shenandoah Valley National Park where they plan to hike some of the Appalachian trail. Hiking alone won't be enough though - they'll need to hitchhike multiple times, and so far there has been no evidence that anyone (other than a fan of the channel) would pick them up. Failure to hitch a ride could leave them stranded in the mountains without proper camping equipment. In gun toting America though, that ain't their only worry...

I grew up in Waynesboro, moved all around but settled back in Staunton, 10 minutes away. Wish you were able to experience here -- completely maintained Victorian architecture, great bars, food, and people. Oh, and public transit. Waynesboro is quite an 'average' and boring small town, but it's still great to see you walk past all of my childhood memories!
We need a Geowizard x Bill Bryson collaboration.
any Durham students / graduates enjoy a good Billy B shoutout?
Just a nerdy FYI... Those "strangely positioned" metal seats were old tractor seats from the early part of last century
Tom, I love ya, but the fact that after all these adventures you're still going out hiking in a cotton shirt, with no adequate sleeping gear, no cash, no GPS device and seemingly no local SIM is driving me insane lol.
It's "How Not To Travel America", not "How To Travel America" 😜
Wonderful as always!!
Another amazing one. I could see you guys trying to do the entire AT in record time or some similar challenge doing the entire thing
definitely my favourite episode of the series so far! so great seeing you in that pick up truck, made me a little jealous even
Getting a 'This video is private' error!
Me too but suspect this is coz it’s about to go live
Your videos bring me a lot of joy :)
I live in Loudoun County. I want to take you kayaking down the Potomac and hiking at all the best spots down river! You are the absolute best creator!
I'm kind of in love with Laura
Love the video. Can’t wait to see if you all make it through my neck of the woods, Charlotte. I grew up in East TN so seeing you all experience the beauty of those blue ridges was really cool. Can hardly wait to see the next video.
man i have to say, it is a pleasure seeing the wonder you guys experience just seeing the everyday for me. good reminder that we cant take out surroundings for granted and to get out and adventure to lands not familiar. just because it is every to someone else, doesnt mean it isnt brilliant to us
kinda cute you all thought you could hitch a ride in america these days. people are way too scared and way too selfish
you experienced what John Denver meant in country roads, very cool. I have been to the Smokies a lot but never Shenandoah
As one of the (no doubt many) people that suggested you do a leg on the Appalachian Trail, I was so happy to see this! Glad that you had a great experience. I look forward to shit hitting the fan next time.
I love that Calvin's last name was bleeped in the video but still in the subtitles 😁
Hi Tom! I’m in the marching band at University of South Carolina. I know a number of folks in the band that are also watching the series. If you have any clips of the band, we’d love if you included them in the next video! I also expect a good few “Cock” jokes. Cheers!
Spurs up 🤙. Hope he enjoyed our new stadium lighting :)
The pick up truck ride seemed incredible! The rest of it too, of course, but that bit was almost too good to be true. Terry 🏆
Let's ride!!!
i think tom likes mushrooms on his pizza
Great way to end my Saturday evening. It was so awesome to see you guys visiting Thornton Gap, where I had my first overnight hike with my dad back in the early 2000's. I later lived in Northern Virginia, or NoVa, for a decade and did some hikes in that same area, so watching this was bringing back plenty of memories (not to mention the Nats games I went to many times with my work). The park rangers really are some of the nicest people you'll meet (esp for government employees) and they are right about hitchhiking, it really isn't a thing in the US like it was perhaps back in the 70s. I never did it myself or heard any stories from friends either (born in the mid 80s). Really looking forward to the remaining episodes as this series hits closer to home for me. Initially when I heard about the idea I thought there is no way you guys would pull it off or survive, but when I saw it it included so many places I lived and visited it made me smile. Get in!
Love the AT, though i have not through hiked it. Well done!
My dad hiked the AT in 2014. Since then he's also hiked the PCT and CDT to become a Triple Crown hiker. I'll ask him if he recognizes the spot y'all were!
Hell yeah! :D New episode!!! :D
Oh hell yeah. Can't wait to sit down and watch this a bit later. Have a great weekend all.
Perfect to fill the gap before MOTD
Great start to the day! (Here in Melbourne Australia).
Nice one Tom!

Thank you!
10/10 series, can’t wait for the next instalment!
Thank you, you are the best!
