Two Brits travel Boston to Miami by any means necessary! (How NOT to Travel America #1)

Here it is Patreons. A week late but I'm really hoping worth the wait.
As usual let me know what you thought of this episode in the comments.

*Watch with subtitles and in HD for full effect*

Grab the popcorn and hunker down for the most grandiose adventure series this channel has ever seen. This is How NOT to Travel America, a comically haphazard yet uniquely uplifting adventure  in which two bumbling brits attempt to charm their way from Boston to Miami by any means possible. Watch our progress as we interact with people from all walks of life, complete hilariously stereotypically American challenges and explore a whole range of settings on multiple modes of transport.
You're watching the very first episode, and keen to start the trip with a bang, Greg and I are hell bent on finding ourselves a cheap boat that we can sail the length of Long Island on. As you can see in the thumbnail we would eventually get a boat, but the rollercoaster of events that both preceded and followed the purchase made for quite a rocky ride..

Tom, you easily manage to let us feel there with you. As the really good writers in books well written. It doesn't really matter what happens, it's the emotional part that counts. And that part it's always there in your videos. Keep it up mate. Greetings from northern Italy.

Brilliant Tom. I love the missions you do but for me, there isn't anything quite as feel good and inspiring as the 'how not to travel' episodes.

So I’m confused. Aren’t episodes supposed to be on Patreon early?

It was 24 hours early Nicholas

Absolutely amazing episode! It's painful to watch you deal with the crappy infrastructure (or lack thereof) for pedestrians, but it's also quite heartwarming to see you find generous people in unlikely places and just work out your route as you go along. Can't wait to see what things you experience further South! I'm guessing the hospitality continues to increase, and perhaps the hitchhiking gets more possible further South as well.

I honestly started tearing up when I started watching it. Your videos have been a good constant in my life since your first Wales attempt. I just know I'm going to get something extreme(ly) enjoyable to watch. Even the simple GeoGuessr videos are wonderful, and usually gets me in the mood to play a couple rounds. I'm a mail man now, and my route has got close to 10 miles of walking, it sucks but I throw on some music and it ain't to bad. I will often play "Flower Glade Zone" on repeat for hours at a time because it is an awesome and calming piece of music. I've been looking forward to this since your big update, almost a year ago, announcing the HNTTA series. So far, it did not disappoint, and I watched it twice day. Thank you Tom! You help me greatly through stressful times!

This is such an amazing video, so damn excited to see how the rest of the series is going to go. Its sooo wild seeing America with you blokes running around in it. We have our quirks, but we have our hearts, too.

I understand that spontaneity makes the "How not to travel" series great, but I can't help but note that I sent an email on March 12th that said: "I live in Boston and have been a patreon for over a year. I would love to help any way I can! ... I also have a car in case you need a lift to New York. ... My number is ..." Glad you found someone to help you out, but the whole first fifteen minutes of the episode scouring Harvard for people with cars willing to drive you guys out of state was a bit of a yell-at-the-screen moment. Then again, that IS why we love Tom and Greg's mischievous misadventures...

G
GeoWizard · December 5, 2022

Appreciate that Shane but getting lifts from subscribers or crashing with them was never on our agenda - too easy! we were calling upon subscribers to help fix us up with modes of transport only. Thanks mate!

Once again, your content is elite, Tom. Truly the best creator I know, so happy to get to experience this adventure through the screen. Yous are both such great guys, it really shows in the way you interact with everyone that crosses your path. Can’t wait for the next episode ⏳

I love the how not to travel series! Europe was a banger and US is looking even better! I don’t know if you are planning on doing another one, but Japan would be a pretty wacky place to consider.

Your adventure at the ATM reminded me of an adventure of mine. It was early January in 2005 and I, living in Copenhagen at the time, decided to visit a friend of mine in Skövde in Sweeden. I set out early in the morning to my local train station to try and buy a ticket for the trip. There I was told that they only could sell me a ticket to Malmö, but I should have no problem getting away from there. Once in Malmö I visited the ticket office and stated my destination, got a print out of the route with exchanges and so forth. However, when it came time to pay the ticketmy Icelandic CC got declined! So I went outside to try it at the kiosk machines and all ATMs in sight, but without luck. At the time, my mobile was with a low budget Danish operator that didn't allow roaming, but I needed somehow to get in contact with my bank to find out what the problem was. My solution was to dial my friend "collect" from a payphone (since I had absolutely $0 on me in cash) and have him call my wife up to have her contact the bank's emergency hotline. I'd then wait half an hour and call back to hear what was up. Finally I got the news back that there was some sort of a problem with the computer systems back home, but it should be sorted within the hour, and I should just keep on trying. Another worry was that I had only just over an hour until the last train left the station. At least I should be able to get a ticket back, so I wouldn't need to spend the night sleeping on a bench. So I kept on trying my card in the ATM, and finally about 10 minutes before the train left, I was stood there with cash in my hand. Problem however, was that the ticket office had closed by then and I still needed a ticket. Not having any better idea, I decided to just run and jump on and hope that a ticket could be bought onboard the train. I made it just as they were about to close the doors and got on, and managed to get a ticket. For the fist half hour or so, the train made good time. However, it then suddenly slowed to a crawl before finally stopping. The conductor came on the blower and babbled something unintelligible in Swedish. Finally I managed to flag down a member off staff who explained the problem to me. Unbeknownst to me, the night before a violent storm had hit the area. A storm notable enough to have it's own wikipedia entry ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Gudrun ). This storm had felled a lot of threes, quite a few of them were now laying on the track. This was a problem, since I needed to make a connection at a place called Nässjö to a train to Skövde. As it turned out, we were at least a couple of hours late getting there. Luckily, unlike with some other forms of travel, the rail operator guaranteed to deliver it's passengers to their destination, so they forked over for a taxi to take me and three others the last ~140km of our journey.

Greg wanting to hug the coastline then running aground was absolute comedy gold. Great start to the series guys.

I was sat here watching the video and about halfway through (when you actually got the boat on the water) I realized I was beaming like an idiot to my computer monitor. Great video, so excited for part 2. Can you just release it right now? And also the rest of the parts?

S
Shane Ewing · December 4, 2022

So do I geo-detective all the places you went in Boston or...?

T
Ty Funk · December 4, 2022

I felt your pain when you talked about getting a boating certificate. I had to do that for the midwest area (I'm in Illinois) a few years ago. IT IS SO LONG. But now I can drive my boat, a jetski, and even a sailboat. It's also funny that the original cost of the motor was $1000 because we like to say B.O.A.T. stands for "Break out another thousand"

X
Xavier Stride · December 3, 2022

Amazing video. Me and my friends rented a boat in Croatia and drifted for an hour for the same reason; not knowing you have to prime the engine.
