How straight can I walk with just a map? I cross the Pennines to find out.
This is a 24 hour Early access release for all paying patreons
Subtitles available!
For my 9th straight line mission, I've gone old school. Instead of a GPS system I'll be following nothing but an Ordnance survey map. I won't even be using a compass (because I forgot it).
The task is to cross the spine of England; the Pennines, starting from Meltham, Yorkshire in the East and ending 6.5 miles away in Upper Mill, Greater Manchester. On the way I'll traverse farmland, mountains and ravines and a whole load of barren, featureless moorland.
The question is, will I be able to stay anywhere near the line in these places, using only the information on my map?

Hi Tom, (love the videos by the way) just wondering have you considered doing maybe straight lines across the many counties in England? Not English myself so not sure how plausible that would be, would/could they be done in a day? Anyway just my thoughts, might make a good series if possible. 👍
Loved this Tom!
Really cool challenge! Would be fun to see how well you could do with a compass as well
I can see this man teaching my son geography on a substitute teacher’s “here watch this video” like the “Bill Nye the science guy”, that we had.
Woah I commented this idea on your blindfolded and stranded review video! Great to see you had a go at it! Giving it a watch tomorrow 👍👍
Just got around to watching... Top video, love the music, landscapes and the aspect. Keep up the good work Tom and thanks again 👍
You missed a big chance in editing. I’d have censored the cow’s faces.
Perfect bitesize video
Geowizard: Let's hope I won't be seen by farmers when I'm on their field ... Geowizard 5 seconds later, wearing a neon-yellow waterback, that you can see from miles away :D :D
The Cross Keys was my local when I used to live in Uppermill! Still live locally but a bit further out now. It was fun to see places I recognised, especially towards the end. Really enjoyed that one 👍
Binoculars would have come in clutch for pinpointing distant targets for aligning yourself with the line in this one. Another great video nonetheless!
I started walking a year ago, inspired by your straight line missions. I'm 3.5 stone lighter, I've covered 1300 miles, and my mental health is the best it's been since I was a teenager. Get out there and walk guys! And thank you Tom for the inspiration! We live in such a beautiful country.
Good video Tom , tough I think you should switch to a 4:3 aspect ration instead of the 8:7 ur using on ur GoPro
Hi Amit, could I ask how you can tell this was shot in 8:7? As this final export is actually 4:3. But it was filmed in 8:7, how did you know, does it look different? Thanks
Excellent adventure! Back to the roots of navigation... Awesome that you have such good maps available, so this becomes possible. Would watch more of it, since it brings back the basic skills of observing your surroundings closely.
You've reinvented the straight line mission! Leaving the compass was a happy accident that really added to the task. Let's see those Fieldhouse boys match you at this new variation. I think older and wiser wins the day. Well done.
Another fantastic mission. Really love the lack of GPS in this one. Watching you navigate with just a map brings me back to 90s secondary school days… exploring without technology. I’d love to see more of these!
Fun and differentm thanks Tom
Have you ever tried orienteering Tom? It's seems like a perfect sport for you and perhaps some content for the channel :)
Also turning the sharpness down looks way better on a GoPro imo
So did the farmers meet you at the pub?
Welsh Farmer in the clouds had me HOWLING!
And me!
oh how I wish to go on such an adventure. sadly Denmark doesn't really have much barren space as it's such a small place. But I can just sit here and imagine I'm joining one of your adventures!
Forgot you have a child now. Straight line dad
Another great adventure Tom! Really loved that you didn’t end up using a compas, I think it made it just that more exciting making you work out all the features to orient yourself with the chance of you getting completely lost on top of it.
You looked so happy in that one, Tom. I’ve never seen you grinning as much. It must’ve been a lot of fun for you!
When doing a 180, lay a long stick on the ground and aim it to a point in the distance, then you know exactly where to go, A trick i learned in the army,
Your drinks bra is always a welcome sight. Some of your videos have me necking gallons of water out of sympathy.
Awesome! Looking forward to this.
Lived in Meltham all my life and it's amazing to see you exploring all the same hills and fields i did when I was younger.
Evening all, what a wonderful notification this was. Can't wait.
It looks awfully dry and brown for March. Had a dry winter in the UK?
The missions are always filmed well in advance of release...editing takes a while.
Awesome! I always thought this would make a great video :)
Thanks Tom
Exactly what I wasn't expecting, but is just right for the soul!
Hi Tom. I've been watching your channel because I can't sleep but I've been thinking that my favourite is still the No Roads Blackcountry series. I've watched it at least 100 times. Maybe it would be interesting to do a Revisit once to see what has changed. Keep up the god work. Greetings from Slovenia.
Yay! Just what I needed :) thanks for the upload
