Recreating a 1940's Dress With Gathered Details
Hello there! Here is a very fun 1940s inspired dress in a subtle cotton and rayon blend jacquard. I actually really love the finished dress and can't wait to make it again in another fabric sometime!
Reminder there will be no new video on the channel this Thursday (Thanksgiving in the US) but hopefully I can share a few photos from my little California trip while I'm away. Thank you so much for your support!

I am nearly finished with this dress and I have to tell you I may have watched the video at least a dozen times during the construction of it. I made it red with the under side of the flounce gold for some extra holiday glam.
Of course a femme fatale can't have too many black dresses. You need at least one per late husband! On a separate note, I'd like to thank you for encouraging people to make basic blocks and draft from them. While my bodice and sleeve blocks are still... shall we say... a work in progress, the skirt block was good enough for me to use to make a pencil skirt to wear for Thanksgiving, and it fits like a dream!
Thank you Laurel! I am so pleased to hear about the skirt!! Good work! The rest of the patterns shall surely be under your full control in no time ✨
Fabulous dress for listening to jazz in a dark room!! The soft A-line really works well with the drape xxxx
Thank you Alexandra! I can't wait to make another one of these in a navy blue wool crepe I have in the stash sometime ✨
I’m going to have to watch that a few dozen times to understand the bodice. I love the dress and hope to have one someday ( if I ever get a place to wear it)
Thank you Melody! It's a funky one for sure!
That beetle brooch is wonderful. I enjoy watching you do your drafting magic. You have seriously changed my drafting skills for the better. I am still working on the gathers around the front of my bodice. I think it is a matter of reducing the ease. I tend to make it too loose and then it just looks frumpy. I am so over the Frumpy look.
Thank you Julie! I am so dangerous with ease, I never add any except for jackets 😅
Ha! Your brooch at the beginning -- at first I thought it was a frog holding drumsticks. Love the rest of the tattoo. That spiderweb!
Thank you Cheryl! So much spiderweb now 🕷️🕸️
I love the final dress. It was so great to be able to watch while prepping veggies for Thanksgiving.
Thank you Charlene!
Yay, I cant wait to watch! The final dress is so beautiful on you
Thank you Eliza!
Ack, your tattoo is decadent and gorgeous 😍 Thank you for sharing your process with this doozy! You are a master drafter, and your explanations fool me into thinking I could do it, too! And thanks for making me want to sew all week instead of baking pies...pies are ephemeral but self-drafted outfits are forevah!
Thank you! You can do it!! Also pies and sewing are both very good and valid 🤩❤️
Thankyou for explaining how this was changed from the original pattern shapes to suit your body type. I made a couple of very successful dresses last summer which had a similar looking end-result using Butterick 6892 (view a) though they're pleated into the side-front seam either side of the waist and then the waterfall drapery is added from there down.
Sometimes I look at the envelope back and think "sure pal, maybe for an A cup girlie" 😅😂 There are some modifications that need extra tweaking for a sloper with a full bust adjustment!
