Making a 1930's Style "Gown" (top and skirt!)
I rarely dip into the 1930s, but when this design drifted by me over on Pinterest, I just had to have these sleeves. Little did I realize just how mind bending they would be to put together without messing up the velvet nap along the way, and how they'd be even more difficult to explain of course! Hopefully seeing what I'm doing will help in that last regard.
Thank you so much for your support! I'll be back soon with the updates poscast, and I want to try and film a little bonus video discussing upcomming projects and looking at some fabric soon as well ❤️

Beautiful and the color is perfect on you. A sparkly clutch is also called for at the opera…..
Just stumbled on this and thought I'd share it, though I see someone else beat me to the punch! The catch stitch / herringbone stitch seems to be good for hemming stretch fabrics, and the finish on the outside of the garment looks indistinguishable from your usual hem finish for wovens! The Spruce has a good tutorial about it: https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/how-to-catch-stitch-5074388
Lee-OVE it! The 30's are so 🔥!
Thank you Marcie!
The split upper sleeves show off your new ink beautifully. I love that you made it separates. The black top would be fabulous with some swishy georgette pants. 😍
Thank you Lorien!
Forgot to add: a herringbone stitch is good with stretch/knit fabric, when sewing by hand. Also it is decorative.
I like the outfit. Love the colour too.
Thank you Marie!
Seeing you hate on fluffy knits, I am happy I have been obligating myself to learn how to french seam stretchy lace and charmeuse. While cottons are still dreamy to sew in comparison, I feel ready for many fabrics now.
Hi, Thank you for another mighty fine video. I just know that I will never be proficient enough in sewing to attempt something like this, but I still love to watch you work. I would love to be a guest at a soiree in your house one day in the future, even if it's only through a video of yours of course, or indeed in my head. I would like to see the glam looks you put together in the wild, so to speak. Also; if you haven't already, you might like Jill Bearup's channel, her writing and her toiles and tribulation at getting published. This isn't why the channel. Usually she does stage combat and armor roasting ("just stab me now"), but she has found herself in a position of publishing. Another one I stumbled onto was from Prior Attire. Isabella is showing an ingenious way to work with velvet. She demonstrates the technique in at the end of her French Visiting Gown video. Yours, Ann
fyi, jill bearup has been found to support TERFS. Just a heads up.
I like the dress but it is very faffy.
Indeed 😂✨
This look is so Norma Desmond!✨Love the dress clips, too!
Thank you Penny! This one has a bunch of spots for dress clip potential ✨
Unbelievably sexy and beautiful
Thank you Thea!
I am glad you are venturing into stretch fabrics. You have given me the courage to try it too. Thank you!
Thank you Julie!
Fabulous, as always. I always use herringbone stitch when hand stitching stretch fabrics. You can use it in place of slip stitching, but it does leave small stitches visible from the outside. I hope that makes sense?
Thank you Elinor! I wouldn't mind visible stitches so I'll have to practice!
Wow, I am also so there for the sleeves. If I can figure them out, I will be sticking them on a few things I have coming up :D
Gotta have epic sleeves! ✨
Gorgeous. Absolutely stunning!
Thank you Concetta!
There is this stitch that I don't know the name of but it imitates overlock stitch by hand. https://pin.it/34Aw9Op
Nice! Thank you!
Delicious!
Thank you Dolores!
It looks fabulous
Thank you Karla!
How do you like your Bernette 35?
Ehhhh...I only use it for stretch stuff, I prefer the Singer 99k by far, the Bernette gives me boat loads of tension issues 😅
This is friggin gorgeous!! I think I need one. But I say that after all of your videos haha
Thank you Amie!
Backstitch is pretty stretchy because it's a bunch of loops.
That indeed makes sense 😅✨
Use a twin needle to top stitch and hem knits... thank me later
I just got one because I love wearing retail knits and am a complete novice at sewing. Can you give me any hints in using it? Also, because it's technically a zigzag stitch setting, does that mean the double needle stitch is also stretchy? Thank you!!
Fabulous. Absolutely gorgeous work.
Thank you Cheryl!
Swoon. I adore the 30s.
