Yeah Spoonflower does use inks for their printing, and it makes the blacks turn out dark grey, and also makes the fabric way stiffer the darker the colour is. If you're ever looking to custom print something again I highly recommend Art Fabrics in Canada! They're pricier, but they print with reactive dyes and it's sooo much nicer. Doesn't affect the texture at all and the blacks actually print BLACK! Definitely worth getting a swatch book from them, they have a lovely selection of fabrics including some silks & silk blends, and they've added more in the few years since I bought my swatch book. They've recently added fake leather, and a poly knit with a glittery silver dotted texture, so you could have custom printed shimmery fabric. Someday I really need to make a printed-to-shape waistcoat out of their cotton/hemp blend... (I know this is an old post, but hopefully you're still open to fabric print opinions? been listening to these old episodes while I work on my own sewing!)

Thank you Concetta! I've been having so much fun 😊✨

Cool! I thought ice-dyeing was all about the dye gathering around the cube shapes as they melted, but this sounds so much better! Can't wait to see what you've come up with.

Excited for your zipper video and cataloguing catalogues! The tie dyes sound amazing, cannot wait to see the rust/patina colours you mentioned. It’s sweltering hot in Aus lately so dreaming of your snowy weather 😍❄️

I'll be editing the zipper video today so it's coming very soon! Sounds like popsicles and shaved ice weather to me 😅😎

I am excited to see your tie dye videos and you sound so bubbly and happy talking about it all.☺️ Your Instagram photos of the process were gorgeous, the dye patterns remind me of the Northern Lights which I've seen once or twice in my lifetime. Tie dye was never something I was much interested in, as it seemed everything was so oversized and droopy, but with your tastes, I know they'll be terrific!

T
The Closet Historian · February 1, 2023

Thank you Penny! I agree the thing holding tie-dye back is the t-shirts, the silhouettes need some help, but the dye effects can be super amazing!

My order from What Katie did that I ordered back on January 7, just left Britain on Wednesday because of a cyber attack on Royal Mail.

I can’t wait to see all your dyeing adventures! I watched one of Fun Endeavors’ geode videos and was amazed. What an interesting technique. If you’re still looking for fabric that looks patina’d, rusted, etc., this might possibly work: https://stylemakerfabrics.com/products/abstract-mottled-layers-rayon-crepe-cinnamon-rose

Thanks Laurel! I'll have to browse this sites fabrics, I've never heard of them!

Lorena · January 28, 2023

I love how much fun you're having, that's enough to make me want to watch it :) As for me, no I'm not having a cold January, I'm having a stinkin hot one lol. Snow in the backyard sounds wonderful.

T
The Closet Historian · February 1, 2023

Thanks Lorena! We have been in the negatives a few times this last week, not just cold, but yikes cold, danger cold 🥶

Second comment, sorry. For amazing rusty looks try discharge dyeing. You can add jewel tones with your dyes in a second step. Now an additional reason to buy all the black things lol Discharge dying uses bleach on dark fabrics. Spatter, spray paint, squirt bottle, rubber stamps, daub. Stop the process with hydrogen peroxide.

Unfortunately reverse dying is just three too many steps for me, I'm too impatient for another round of washing, and waiting, and rinse again, and let dry...😂

We dyed sky fabrics for landscape quilts this summer! I thickened the dyes with alginate and painted… so much fun :) we worked outside to minimize the mess… a friend from church tie dyed a business suit that he WEARS TO WORK, lol A tie dye channel I like is LSD Tie Dye TV; I’ll have to check out those channels you mentioned. A low cost alternative to Synthropol is Original Dawn dish liquid. And Shout Dye Catchers are extra insurance. I’m excited to see the dye projects… tie dye is one of those minute to learn, life time to perfect skills. And the tip above to look for dyeable items when thrifting is golden. One amazing find is table linens, especially fancy Irish linens that no one wants to iron anymore. It’s YARDAGE :) Dharma Trading has the soda ash you will need to prepare them for dyeing.

Very excited for the tie dye videos! I'd love to see a thrift haul, I think after so long it deserves to be on the channel :) And if you'll be going out thrifting more in the near future to look for dyeablw clothes, you could also film the modeling clips for your latest thrift finds and put together the video when you feel you've collected enough. Could be nice as a lower effort project when you're in deep with the next lookbook!

Thank you! I've just scored a few great sweaters recently 😂✨

I've used the cotton lawn from Dharma Trading and it was great. I've never used the silks or cotton sateen, but the fabric there is good quality. I've dyed coutil for a corset. It turned out well. I read that pre-washing the fabric with Synthropol helps strip and extra clean the fabric before dying it, so I did pre-wash with that. I'm super excited to see how your dying adventures turn out!

L
Laura Heckman · January 28, 2023

Agree about using Synthropol, it's a great product and really helps.

I'm so excited for the dyeing videos. It is something I want to try myself, I love the outcomes you've shared in Instagram, and it is so much fun to see you try new art forms.

Thank you Kirsten! It's really unlocked the "messy child" side of my creativity 😂
