The Regular Cowl Neck and a Faux Wrap Split Skirt

Hello!! I forgot to mention this in the video, but yes, my hands are very stained from doing tie-dye and that's why my nails are super *yikes* looking in this video 😅

Today I'm making a rather 'business on the top and date night on the bottom' dress in a lovely lightweight suiting wool. A little brown dress? We can make it a thing.

Thank you so much for your support, and we can catch up some more soon in the podcast ❤

My apologies if this isn't the right place to ask the question, but what's going on with these sleeves? https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/565131453247342866/ Are they just long tubes gathered up, is there extra length added down the top center, what's the deal? (Also I think I'm in love with smocking on velvet, who knew that would be so gorgeous?)

Hmm! I'm afraid I'm just not sure! I assume they flair a little bit towards the "cuff" to create the more balloon shape, but really I haven't a clue I'm afraid. I haven't made anything with shirring or smocking myself!

Venomous Flair! Every girl needs some Venomous Flair! Or maybe it's the name for a really cool all girl Goth band?

I could not find skirt hooks in my country anywhere. Well duh, they are called trouser hooks here, but it is the same thing :D Anything for ladies is flimsy and deinty.

So beautiful! Now I’m thinking about how I could go about making a cowl neck top - maybe as a reverse wrap top? Or with a side zipper? Also, this being my first comment on here: Thank you, Bianca, for teaching me to sew and to confidently making up my own designs!! Can’t wait to see what you have planned for this year.

The Closet Historian · January 27, 2023

Thank you Veronika! I would only caution to maybe make a mock up if you do a cowl wrap back top, as if the wrap is too low in the back the cowl will probably slip off the shoulders, it needs some stability. For example, you can't make something with a cowl in the front and in the back unless it's either stabilized to another layer underneath, or looped around the bra straps basically 😂

The bag lining is just so satisfying to watch!

I love wool! I just made a 1940s pattern dress from this wool jersey: https://www.moodfabrics.com/calvin-klein-dark-olive-solid-jersey-fw19474 I sewed it darts and all to get the original pattern drape. Just used a baby zig zag to make sure the seams wouldn't pop. What a dream!

Absolutely stunning! I love the cowl neck; I have only done cowl necks with stretchy knits, but I really love the way that this looks in a woven.

T
The Closet Historian · January 25, 2023

Thank you Catherine! They do hang super well in knits for sure!

Talking of dark brown shoes, check out Memery! I have some beautiful, warm, and comfortable boots in a dark chocolate leather from there, and they do lots of reproductions of vintage shoes!

I love my memery shoes, i got a pair of the flat sandals they released last year and they are so comfortable and cute. I want to get another pair in a second color this year to match more of my stuff.

I like when your voiceover self talks to your past sewing self like a coach giving a pep talk: "Hey kid come on, you can do it!" I love brown and this dress is gorgeous. A winning look!

T
The Closet Historian · January 25, 2023

Thank you Penny! Voiceover me has to deal with whatever past me did and regret is all 😂

The hem points on either side of the slit really look fantastic. It's additional visual interest, yet subtle.

T
The Closet Historian · January 25, 2023

Thank you Laurel! I don't know why I didn't think to point them from the start ✨

Love the brown, and I am now a convert to faced cowls--that drape is lovely.

Sooo flattering!!! Where did you get those bug earrings Bianca? I must have them please share!! I think that you are amazingly clear in your voice overs. You are a great teacher. I finally just got my mother’s sewing machine. I plan on learning how to draft patterns that fit my plus sized body. It is all due to you that I feel it’s something I could even try. I’m at a new highest weight ever and it is taking me out of cute plus sized clothing sizes. So - new adventures will be had in personalized sewing patterns for this body I inhabit. Thank you Bianca for being such an inspiration!

Thank you Thea! Sewing machine acquisition is always cause for celebration!! The earrings are from Etsy, can be found here https://www.etsy.com/listing/933784598/large-cicada-earrings-bronze-cicadas?

I am a big fan of brown, all of my next projects are in that color family. I'm wondering if you could have done a hem facing? You would probably have to do more handfinishing later with turning under the lining to attach to the facing, but it may have saved you having to do it on the zipper? I think that would have preserved the order of construction, but you may even be able to work it so that the underlap/overlaps could get sandwiched too?

T
The Closet Historian · January 25, 2023

Somewhere there had to be hand finishing for sure! Facing the front edge and hem of the skirt would definitely have helped, but it's the overlapping nature of the front that stumps me on how to line both layers and yet have the bodice lining and skirt lining in one to put in as I would normally do. I could have it be a cutout slit instead of a full wrap, but the full wrap has nice movement when one walks so ehhh. Sewing puzzles!

I agree with previous messages! It's nice to have more advanced projects. It tests our abilities & make us try harder & try new things! Dress is FABULOSO! & glad you had time to take care of B! If WE don't take care of our psyche, WHO WILL? Can't wait to see your journey to home ownership! SEW ON SWEET FRIENDS, SEW ON! 😇🥳💘

Thank you Marcie! I twist my brain doing mental origami sometimes to figure out how to get everything together when doing full linings 😂

Just wanted to say before I started watching…. It’s been the kind of week where you pause Side Husseln to take a nap and come home from the hospital 3 days later minus a gallbladder :) It’s good to get back in my routine

Oh my goodness, this dress is gorgeous! I would classify myself as a beginner when it comes to sewing garments. Your explanation of techniques and the “how” and “why” of the process make total sense to me. I have learned so much from your channel! I’m a new-ish subscriber, and I’m so grateful to have found your corner of the internet! Thank you!
