Pattern Drafting A Faux Cowl Neck? Or is it?

A quick patterning experiment today! I've been busy working on some super fun projects for next month that I am very excited to show you soon. I think I'll try one of these cowl neck patterns on a project next month too. Thank you for your support!

I love that you showed us the evolution of this pattern. So often i give up after the first try, it's nice to see what happens when you persevere! The final pattern looks amazing and i can't wait to see it as a dress

Thank you for this tutorial! I really like version 1, even if that’s not what you were going for. Also, your hair & makeup in the modeling footage remind me of Isabella Rossellini in “Death Becomes Her”.

Thank you Laurel!

thanks for sharing this one! It was so cool to see the changes you made. I love the vintage high-neck cowl type designs, and haven't found too many tutorials online for how to draft them, so thanks again!

do you ever use a drapey fabric for muslins? is that ever "done" in the industry? I've got no formal training, but I like to assess the drape of patterns where drapey fabrics are important for the final design, so sometimes I use whatever really cheap rayon challis I can get my hands on.

I would say for the industry certainly! But for myself I rarely ever make a mock up in general, so it would have to be for a project with really special fabric I didn't want to mess up 😂

This was so helpful! I've seen similar cowl neck instructions, but also have uncommon measurements. I have been wanting to give it a shot for awhile, and without this extra guidance, there's no way I would have been able to figure it out. Thank you again!!

Thank you Amie! Sometimes simple patterns become problem solving adventures real quick 😅

It's the red necklace you got for 70% off! I watched that thrift haul a couple days ago and was trying to think when/if you'd worn it. Lo and behold, there it is! I could go for that nice brown dress you showed at the end, well, maybe as a top with matching pants as I never wear dresses, but I do love high necklines. Always fascinating to watch you manipulate paper into magic!

Thank you Penny! There is an even more epic rhinestone necklace I need to reveal "in a best finds of the year" sort of video soon 🤩

This was awesome to watch. I quite like the first one you did as personal preference but i can see why the high neck would look good with that dress too. Thanks for sharing!

T
The Closet Historian · November 26, 2022

Thank you Lindsey! I like the first one a lot too ✨

I've spent the last year wondering why your voice seems so familiar. My husband walked through the room and after three seconds, asked if Ellen DeGeneres was sewing. I'm too lazy to scroll through comments, has anyone else mentioned this?!

T
The Closet Historian · November 26, 2022

I do indeed get this all the time, though I have never watched her show/comedy, so I don't know where it could come from!

Could you leave your waist dart instead of closing it, or would that mess with the style? I have a shirt with a similar cowl that I absolutely love. I was thinking about tearing it apart to figure out the pattern. Now I don’t have to thanks to this video.

T
The Closet Historian · November 20, 2022

Yes! You can leave the waist dart, or put it anywhere really! I just thought it would blend in and be pretty unseen up into the shoulder with everything else going on.
